jazzweek.com • September 18, 2006 JazzWeek 9 Industry Q&A: Jana La Sorte, Founder/ President of Janlyn PR

ndustry veteran Jana La Sorte has worked PR for countless artists and labels, but what is tru- ly remarkable about her is the endless energy she puts into her work and her ability to keep Ithe spectre of jazz geek at bay – this woman has a LOT of non-jazz interests. JazzWeek caught up with La Sorte at her Maplewood, N.J., office. – Tad Hendrickson

JazzWeek: What’s your personal background? Jana La Sorte: I’m the daughter of an army officer and a trained opera singer, so I moved around a lot and listened to many different kinds of music. My musical life con- sisted of singing in choirs and playing the , be- fore going to college at Northwestern, where I hosted two different radio shows on our station, WNUR FM. My morning show was “Jana with Jazz” and my night show was “Streetbeat with J-Love.” Yeah that’s right. I was dubbed that by a senior jock, and it stuck. How did you find your way jazz and subsequently jazz publicity? After hosting that jazz radio show, I was hooked. It’s easy to get hooked when you can go through stacks and stacks of old LPs and discover musical treasure. I was working in promotions too at the time for WBBM FM, a pop station in known was “The Killer Bee,” and for Alligator Records, a great indie blues label. Once I graduated, there was no gig at Alligator available unfor- tunately, and I turned down the one at WBBM. That repetitious, commercial and, frankly, unseemly radio world just wasn’t my cup of tea. I thought jazz was only going to be a personal hobby at that point, and took a job on Capitol Hill. As luck would have it though, af- ter moving to DC, I was randomly offered a job at Blues Alley Jazz Club. I worked weekends there for years, and had great times of hanging out at the bar after shows WBGO’s Michael Bourne and publicist Jana La Sorte demo a couple with great artists like Joe Williams, , May- of basses at the music instrument show at the Jazz Fes- nard Ferguson and just soaking up their stories. By then, tival. ➤ I had left the Hill and was working in corporate PR. jazzweek.com • September 18, 2006 JazzWeek 10 Industry Q&A: Jana La Sorte (continued)

Where? I worked for 10 years in corporate PR agencies working with Nike, Revlon, MTV, Microsoft and others. Then one day I received a call out of the blue to consider moving to New York and working in jazz PR. Off I went. I left my Our industry’s job as Director of Communications at Americans For The Arts to take the jazz arrogance about PR job at Third Floor Media. You weren’t there long before going on your own. Why go it alone? “what is jazz” There are a lot of factors. I have my own ideas of how to best service clients stops younger and want to be able to implement them without any internal politics. I like choosing what projects I work on and building long-term personal and profes- people and others sional relationships with my clients. And as an Army brat and Sagittarian, I from getting like my independence and not having to ask someone if I can take a vacation day! “into the music. ... What’s the hardest part of the job? People shouldn’t Accounting! It’s necessary to pay the bills, but it is my least favorite part of working for myself. feel they have to What’s the most fun? have a degree in Watching someone’s career, industry profile and confidence increase due in jazz in order to part to my efforts on their behalf. That is the feel-good factor of my job for sure. buy it or go hear it You’ve gone off to do other kinds of work (with arts organizations and TV) live. why come back to jazz? Actually I have always worked on non-jazz projects. Jazz makes up the major- ity of what I do, but I’m a big believer in fulfilling all parts of myself, and be- ing well rounded. That’s why I went down to for Katrina clean up before going back there to revel in jazz fest this year. That’s why I run a gallery, J Gallery, www.jgallery.net, and host a local arts TV show. Jazz is the genre of music that probably moves me the most though. It appeals to my be- lief that beautiful results occur when people challenge perceived barriers and collaborate to accomplish one mission that can still serve each as unique indi- viduals. I like to improvise in my life. Sounds about right. What do you think is the biggest obstacle facing the jazz industry right now? Our own rigidity. Our industry’s arrogance about “what is jazz” stops younger people and others from getting into the music, for instance. People shouldn’t feel they have to have a degree in jazz in order to buy it or go hear it live. I tell my friends who claim they hate jazz to just listen to it to see if it makes them move, feel, think or want to dance. That right there is the biggest obstacle to me – we took the street and dancing life out of this music by putting it in schools, in great halls. It can certainly live in those places too, but it’s not ➤ jazzweek.com • September 18, 2006 JazzWeek 11 Industry Q&A: Jana La Sorte (continued)

thought of as the party, swinging music it is to dance to except maybe in New Orleans or in Paris, where I danced for hours at La Caveau Rue de Hachette, a club that nightly packs young people in to dance to live jazz. That’s what we need here in the U.S. and to bring back to jazz. What projects are you working on? I’m quite fortunate to work with the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Duke El- lington Jazz Festival, which is coming up this October 4-8 in Washington, DC. I work with a great new classic jazz label called Lineage Records, which features Hank Jones, , Barry Harris, Cedar Walton and introduces younger players like Dmitry Baevsky and label founder/musician, Ilya Lushtak. I’m also launching the South Orange Performing Arts Center, a new arts and cinema complex in New Jersey. I just finished working with a terrific young pianist, Helen Sung, who people should take note of. Hip us to something non-jazz (or that you aren’t working) that you think is really cool that other people may not know about? I like the stuff coming from outside the USA, I’m finding, and am on a vocal kick right now. Israeli composer and vocalist Ayelet Rose Gottlieb is inventive and dazzling on her new Tzadik CD, Mayim Rabim. ’s Molly Johnson rocked the Montreal Jazz Festival this year and has to become better known here. From Holland is Aafje Van Summeren, whose moody voice and music gets me. And Gigi from Ethiopia has a great CD out produced by Bill Las- JW well.

For four years – until recently – La Sorte was on the board of the Telluride Jazz Festival. She’s shown here at that fest with a former client, singer Allan Harris. jazzweek.com • September 18, 2006 JazzWeek 12 Jazz Radio

Coltrane is featured on a half dozen of Dameron originals and both have room to stretch out.

Ellington sat in with the Coltrane quartet to feature Duke’s compositions in a meeting of two generations of genius.
