Though many of the presenta­ tions in the UMS season are rooted in traditional performance M practice, new musical artists come into our midst to offer us creativity and experimentation by inspiring us with their unique artistry. The next series of artists featured in your program book offer just this they all represent the next generation of musical adventure seekers. The SFJAZZ Collective, under the artistic direction of famed saxophonist Joshua Redman, takes the "ideas" inherent in the history of improvised music and makes them relevant in today's culture. By identifying the trail-blazing genius of Herbie Hancock as an artist worthy of tribute, the SFJAZZ Collective is taking Hancock's maverick torch and running with it for this special concert. Not only do UMS audiences love the guitar, but our audi­ ences rightly demand that guitarists presented under UMS auspices be world-class virtuosos. The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (LAGQ) expertly reinterprets masterworks and offers compellingly new compositions. Guided by four distinct gui­ tar voices, LAGQ showcase the reason for their popularity the fact that they are simply unsurpassed. The Levant region of the Eastern Mediterranean is home to a rich musical culture that has been practiced for millen­ nia, but the music of this region has not been standing still. The contemporary culture and history of Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria are the platform for the leading-edge artists fea­ tured in the Arab World Music Summit on April 15. Abdullah Chhadeh is a genius on the qanun, an impor­ tant zither-like instrument indigenous to this region. He and his ensemble, Nara, will evoke and pay tribute to the diverse UMS 05/06 University Musical Society communities that surround each of the historic gates in the ancient city of Damascus. Merging contemporary impulses with traditional sensibilities, Chhadeh evokes memories and profound emotions for the city in which he was raised. '" Like his father Marcel Khalife, Rami Khalife is truly fearless in his original compositions and piano performance style. Drawing upon all musical influ­ ences, he made his Hill Auditorium debut last season as part of the Arab World Music Festival. Rami is currently studying at The Juilliard School; this concert marks his first solo effort in performance of his own compositions merging classical Arabic and Western music with the avant-garde. Finally, Trio Joubran, three talented brothers from Nazareth, is creating a massive buzz in the world music scene. Their fresh, arresting, and passionate performances are inspiring a new generation of oud players and audiences. Coming from an important musical family in Palestine and now residing in Paris, Trio Joubran continues to push their traditions forward across the globe. Identifying fresh talent and supporting emerging artists is one of the important components of the UMS mission. "That felt good,'' said Goldstein, the gifted arranger who orchestrated the classic Coleman tunes and some of the original numbers the octet will perform at its debut concerts in San Francisco this week. Goldstein sought the essential feeling and flavor of each piece, framing the material with a knowing simplicity that lets the music speak for itself. It was particularly challenging to orchestrate Coleman's radically unconventional and intuitive music, with its freedom from predetermined harmonic and metric structures and its focus on group improvisation. "You can't write what Ornette played, you have to feel it,'' said Goldstein, 53, a calm, slyly amusing man with thick white hair, green eyes and rosy skin. He was lunching on shrimp and egg rolls the other day at Eliza's on California Street, down the block from the new Jewish Community Center, where the SFJazz Collective has been rehearsing intensely. "And there are not many people alive who can play his music the way he played it, with such rhythmic abandon. These musicians can do it. While best known for his re-envisioning of the classics, Rami Khalife, who graduated from the prestigious Juilliard school of New York, was featured as a soloist alongside some of the world’s most prized orchestras including Globalis Orchestra, Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra and Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Rami Khalifé has extensively toured in the U.S, South America, Asia, Canada, Europe, Australia, in such venues as the Kennedy Center (Washington, USA), the Sydney Opera House (Sydney, Australia), the Opera House (Doha, Qatar), Place Des Arts (Montreal, Canada), Dar el Opera (Damascus, Syria), Queen Elizabeth Hall (London), Salle Pleyel (Paris, France) and UNESCO Palace (Beirut, Lebanon). Rami Khalifé’s work is as eclectic as it is bold, ranging from improvised concerts, recording a Prokofiev concerto to performing with Marcel Khalifé. He also composed contemporary works for orchestra, producing sound tracks for film and documentary, only to switch it all up with his classic electro group AUFGANG. His body of work includes two piano concertos, a requiem, a cello concerto and several orchestral pieces including “Tunnel to the Moon”, all of which, he premiered with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. He was also commissioned by the Philadelphia chamber orchestra to write his new piece ‘’Stories’’ to be performed at the end of the year.

This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds.

Carter For The Inquirer DARRYL PITT Rehearsing in New York last August for Michael Brecker's last album, "Pilgrimage," (from left) Gil Goldstein, Herbie Hancock, Brecker, John Patitucci, Pat Metheny and Jack DeJohnette. Brecker died Jan. 13 at 57. Michael Brecker, one of the greatest tenor saxophonists of our time and of all time, left this existence on Jan. 13 at the age of 57. But those who knew him and played with him believe that his musical and personal legacy will live on with the posthumous album Pilgrimage (Heads Up Records), which was released last week. "It is a testament to the awesome drive Michael had for his life, and his incredible will to live," Brecker's widow, Susan, said by telephone from her family home in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., about an hour's drive north of Manhattan. She added that a posthumous release "was not what we all had in mind for Michael. It is an incredible statement, but we are all, still, devastated." The record is a moving and monumental testimony to and from Brecker, who won the last two of his 13 Grammy Awards this year (for jazz instrumental solo and jazz large-ensemble album) for Some Skunk Funk, a collaboration with his brother, Randy, a trumpeter. Pilgrimage is a showcase, workshop and epitaph for Brecker, made with some of his most illustrious longtime collaborators - pianists Herbie Hancock and Brad Mehldau, drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist John Patitucci, and guitarist Pat Metheny. He learned the piano, organ and cello as a child and then attended the Conservatories Turin and Paris where he studied the cello. Who provided the back-beat for Steely Dan's "Aja", and for whom have Isaac Hayes, Donny Hathaway, B.B. King, "Sweet" Lou Donaldson, Joe Cocker and Hank Crawford reserved that stool behind the drum kit? The list is incomplete, it must be, because no other drummer in the last three decades has seen the interior of a recording studio as often as Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. The 57 year-old native of Elkton, Maryland has laid down the beat on over 3000 albums to date. This short list does, however, provide an idea of the unique qualities this man possesses. Colleagues describe the drummers style as the "funkiest soul beat" in the business, and Purdie has decidedly never limited his talents to the realm of Jazz but rather has consistently sought out new musical experiences beyond it's borders. He has anchored sessions with the Rolling Stones, James Brown and Tom Jones with equal ease and proven that - with all his attention to precision playing - terms such as "drive" and "GROOVE" are definitely not missing from his vocabulary. This is certainly why his rhythms have appeared as samples on nearly every "Acid Jazz" record released in the past few years - the new genre that has so successfully hosted the renaissance of Soul Jazz.
