Sammy Figueroa Full
Sammy Figueroa has long been regarded as one of the world’s great musicians. As a much-admired percussionist he provided the rhythmical framework for hundreds of hits and countless recordings. Well-known for his versatility and professionalism, he is equally comfortable in a multitude of styles, from R & B to rock to pop to electronic to bebop to Latin to Brazilian to New Age. But Sammy is much more than a mere accompanist: when Sammy plays percussion he tells a story, taking the listener on a journey, and amazing audiences with both his flamboyant technique and his subtle nuance and phrasing. Sammy Figueroa is now considered to be the most likely candidate to inherit the mantles of Mongo Santamaria and Ray Barretto as one of the world’s great congueros. Sammy Figueroa was born in the Bronx, New York, the son of the well-known romantic singer Charlie Figueroa. His first professional experience came at the age of 18, while attending the University of Puerto Rico, with the band of bassist Bobby Valentin. During this time he co-founded the innovative Brazilian/Latin group Raices, which broke ground for many of today’s fusion bands. Raices was signed to a contract with Atlantic Records and Sammy returned to New York, where he was discovered by the great flautist Herbie Mann. Sammy immediately became one of the music world’s hottest players and within a year he had appeared with John McLaughlin, the Brecker Brothers and many of the world’s most famous pop artists. Since then, in a career spanning over thirty years, Sammy has played with a -

Vince Mendoza
Vince Mendoza BLAUKLANG ACT 9465-2 German Release Date: September 26, 2008 In jazz, the colour blue sometimes conveys red threads. And it is no accident that this CD opens with music from a classic jazz album whose title puts its cards on the table: “of ”the most successful jazz album of all time. “”lets us literally dive into the blue sea of melancholy. When you combine blue and sounds, the blues emerges once again. The idea of Blauklang (ACT 9465-2) goes back to a painting by the famous German artist Ernst Wilhelm Nay (1902-1968), part of the ACT ART COLLECTION of Siggi Loch. In close cooperation with Bernd Hoffmann of the WDR (West German Radio) the idea of this project became reality. The name of the painting, “” “”already refers to the synaesthetic relationship between music and fine art. Grounded in the impact of colour, ’abstract works now have taken on board a real “”Vince Mendoza. Mixtures of tonal colours and coloured tones that overlay a variety of harmonic and melodic voices shape a large part of his compositions. Mendoza rules over this sovereign play of light and shadow, brightness and darkness. The album Sketches (ACT 9215-2), which he recorded with the WDR Big Band, already encapsulates an aspect of ’ work methods. Again and again he is stirred into assembling sketches into a musical arc of images. Compositions as suites – and he is as much enamoured by the details as he treasures large arcing structures. Once again Mendoza is able to find the balance between aspirations and expectations. -
Arranger Braves the Challenge That Is Ornette Coleman
Arranger braves the challenge that is Ornette Coleman www.sfgate.com Return to regular view Arranger braves the challenge that is Ornette Coleman - Jesse Hamlin, Chronicle Staff Writer Wednesday, March 31, 2004 Gil Goldstein was bobbing slowly on the piano bench, a slightly pained expression on his face as he listened to the SFJazz Collective play Ornette Coleman's mournfully singing "Lonely Woman.'' "That felt good,'' said Goldstein, the gifted arranger who orchestrated the classic Coleman tunes and some of the original numbers the octet will perform at its debut concerts in San Francisco this week. Goldstein sought the essential feeling and flavor of each piece, framing the material with a knowing simplicity that lets the music speak for itself. It was particularly challenging to orchestrate Coleman's radically unconventional and intuitive music, with its freedom from predetermined harmonic and metric structures and its focus on group improvisation. "You can't write what Ornette played, you have to feel it,'' said Goldstein, 53, a calm, slyly amusing man with thick white hair, green eyes and rosy skin. He was lunching on shrimp and egg rolls the other day at Eliza's on California Street, down the block from the new Jewish Community Center, where the SFJazz Collective has been rehearsing intensely. "And there are not many people alive who can play his music the way he played it, with such rhythmic abandon. These musicians can do it. What I tried to do is make the arrangements flexible enough to fit into those floating time zones. Ornette's music is also very speech-like, and, like speech, doesn't have a strict time flow. -
Paolo Fresu Devil Quartet
PAOLO FRESU DEVIL QUARTET Paolo Fresu (tpt, flh, eff) – Bebo Ferra (g) – Paolino Dalla Porta (cb) – Stefano Bagnoli (dr) Devil… beyond the good inventions of the Italian style In order to help us in this presentation we are using a part of the accurate title of a feature by the sorely missed Italian journalist Vittorio Franchini, who labelled the Paolo Fresu led quartet music as “a good invention of the Italian Style”. Wise people know very well that it’s no good to ‘rest on one’s laurels’, which is what very often happens in the contemporary commercial music scene. Kudos to Fresu and to this extraordinary band that, after an electric beginning on the heels of the successful experience of the ‘Angel’ quartet, found new sap with the new ‘Devil’. And these ‘Devil’ have run a long way in the music territories of our times. Therefore, after this electric and powerful start, through Fresu’s idea of a new meaning of cross breed music or -as he defines it, melange- many were wondering where the quartet music could go. Well, Fresu, Ferra, Dalla Porta and Bagnoli take everyone by surprise proposing the most electric band of the Italian jazz scene of the last few years in a completely acoustic version, subverting canons and habits, also the drowsy habits of many journalists that find it easy to hastily stick labels on a certain project. Fresu’s simply new, and in a way unsettling, idea is to release a completely different record from the previous albums, whose strength lies the fact that is a completely acoustic, played on completely acoustic instruments (including Bebo Ferra’s guitars and Stefano Bagnoli only brushes technique, in which he is a true master). -
