    Vince Mendoza BLAUKLANG ACT 9465-2 German Release Date: September 26, 2008 In jazz, the colour blue sometimes conveys red threads. And it is no accident that this CD opens with music from a classic jazz album whose title puts its cards on the table: “of ”the most successful jazz album of all time. “”lets us literally dive into the blue sea of melancholy. When you combine blue and sounds, the blues emerges once again. The idea of Blauklang (ACT 9465-2) goes back to a painting by the famous German artist Ernst Wilhelm Nay (1902-1968), part of the ACT ART COLLECTION of Siggi Loch. In close cooperation with Bernd Hoffmann of the WDR (West German Radio) the idea of this project became reality. The name of the painting, “” “”already refers to the synaesthetic relationship between music and fine art. Grounded in the impact of colour, ’abstract works now have taken on board a real “”Vince Mendoza. Mixtures of tonal colours and coloured tones that overlay a variety of harmonic and melodic voices shape a large part of his compositions. Mendoza rules over this sovereign play of light and shadow, brightness and darkness. The album Sketches (ACT 9215-2), which he recorded with the WDR Big Band, already encapsulates an aspect of ’ work methods. Again and again he is stirred into assembling sketches into a musical arc of images. Compositions as suites – and he is as much enamoured by the details as he treasures large arcing structures. Once again Mendoza is able to find the balance between aspirations and expectations.

    Raul Midón If You Really Want with The Metropole Orkest conducted by Vince Mendoza The New York Times has called Raul Midón “a one-man band who turns a guitar into an orchestra and his voice into a chorus.” Now, with his exciting new album – If You Really Want, to be released via Artistry Music/Mack Avenue on September 14 – Midón’s voice and guitar ride the waves of an actual orchestra: the acclaimed Metropole Orkest, the GRAMMY® Award-winning Dutch ensemble that has collaborated with artists from Al Jarreau and Elvis Costello to Laura Mvula and Snarky Puppy. Midón – who earned his first GRAMMY nomination for Bad Ass and Blind, his Artistry Music/Mack Avenue album of 2017 – worked hand in glove on If You Really Want with another renowned GRAMMY winner and frequent Metropole Orkest collaborator: conductor-composer-arranger Vince Mendoza. He has played with the Stan Kenton and Maynard Ferguson big bands, Weather Report, Steps Ahead, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Diana Krall, Kenny Wheeler, The Brecker Brothers, The Yellowjackets, Pat Metheny and Gary Burton, John Abercrombie, John Scofield, et al, and has appeared as a soloist with the London, Los Angeles, Chicago, Oslo, Helsinki, Bremen, Beethovenhalle, Frankfurt Radio, Scottish Chamber, Royal Opera House, New York City Opera, L.A. Opera, BBC Symphony and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras. Peter has been named ’Best Jazz Drummer of the Year’ ten times by Modern Drummer magazine and was inducted into the magazine’s Hall of Fame. Peter graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy and studied at Indiana University under George Gaber. He is currently Professor of Practice and Director of Drumset Studies at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. NY [email protected] www.johnabercrombie.com Born 1944 in Port Chester, NY, John Abercrombie grew up in Greenw ich, Connecticut, and began playing the guitar at the age of fourteen. By the time he w as out of high school, he w as ready to veer aw ay from imitative Chuck Berry licks in favor of learning to play the instrument more seriously. While enrolled at Boston's Berklee College of Music, Abercrombie w orked w ith other students and played local clubs and bars. "it w as pretty much your standard guitar-organ-drums set up." An offer to tour w ith organist Johnny Hammond led to his going on the road for w eeks at a time, playing such spots as Count Basie's Lounge and the Club Baron in Harlem. During that same period, Abercrombie met the Brecker Brothers w ho w ere in the process of forming Dreams. They invited Abercrombie to play w ith them, and he w as heard on Dreams' debut album on Columbia. In 1969, follow ing graduation from Berklee, Abercrombie decided to head south in hopes of breaking into the New York music scene. In the next few years he developed into one of New York's most in-demand session musicians. He recorded w ith Gil Evans, Gato Barbieri, Barry Miles and many other artists, and also became a regular w ith Chico Hamilton's group. It w as as the guitarist in Billy Cobham's band that Abercrombie first began attracting w idespread attention among the general public.
