The Beatles revolution- ized the recording process using technology to achieve completely unprecedented sounds and arrangements. Until then, popular music recordings were simply faithful reproductions of a live performance. Over the past fifty years, recording and production techniques have advanced so far that another challenge has arisen: it is now very difficult for performing artists to give a live performance that has the same impact, complexity and nuance as a produced studio recording. -

Vince Mendoza BLAUKLANG ACT 9465-2 German Release Date: September 26, 2008 In jazz, the colour blue sometimes conveys red threads. And it is no accident that this CD opens with music from a classic jazz album whose title puts its cards on the table: “of ”the most successful jazz album of all time. “”lets us literally dive into the blue sea of melancholy. When you combine blue and sounds, the blues emerges once again. The idea of Blauklang (ACT 9465-2) goes back to a painting by the famous German artist Ernst Wilhelm Nay (1902-1968), part of the ACT ART COLLECTION of Siggi Loch. In close cooperation with Bernd Hoffmann of the WDR (West German Radio) the idea of this project became reality. The name of the painting, “” “”already refers to the synaesthetic relationship between music and fine art. Grounded in the impact of colour, ’abstract works now have taken on board a real “”Vince Mendoza. Mixtures of tonal colours and coloured tones that overlay a variety of harmonic and melodic voices shape a large part of his compositions. Mendoza rules over this sovereign play of light and shadow, brightness and darkness. The album Sketches (ACT 9215-2), which he recorded with the WDR Big Band, already encapsulates an aspect of ’ work methods. Again and again he is stirred into assembling sketches into a musical arc of images. Compositions as suites – and he is as much enamoured by the details as he treasures large arcing structures. Once again Mendoza is able to find the balance between aspirations and expectations. -

After GRAMMY® Award nominations for his two previous Artistry Music/Mack Avenue Music Group releases – Bad Ass & Blind and If You Really Want, each for Best Jazz Vocal Album – he returns with his 11th studio album and fourth for the label: The Mirror, to be released March 13, 2020. The Mirror finds Midón breaking new ground for himself, including two entrancing solo spoken-word pieces (“If I Could See” and “One Day Without War”). The album also features studio meetings with such veteran jazz colorists as vibraphonist Joe Locke (“A Certain Café”), as well as a songwriting collaboration with top pianist Gerald Clayton, “Deep Dry Ocean.” Another highlight is the road-weary jazz ballad “Cold Cuts and Coffee,” while title track “The Mirror” beguiles with its easy tropical groove, lyrical sophistication and Midón’s flowing electric guitar. As National Public Radio set the stage before his captivating edition of its “Tiny Desk Concert” broadcast: “Raul Midón lives in a world of sound. Blind since birth, Midón’s interpretation of his surroundings is borderless. He sings with the passion of the best classic soul singers, and his instrumental chops stand alongside the most accomplished jazz musicians.” About The Mirror, Midón says: “I produced and pored over this album like I do all my records – they really are me in that sense. THE HARMONY OF DEBUSSY IN CONTEMPORARY JAZZ BRIGHAM PHILLIPS A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO JANUARY, 2018 © BRIGHAM PHILLIPS, 2018 ABSTRACT Claude Debussy and other late 19th-century composers (especially Maurice Ravel) introduced several new harmonic innovations that have since become standard tools of the jazz composer/arranger/improviser, among them the rich harmonies of chromatically altered chords as well as the use of the whole tone, pentatonic and octatonic scales. This thesis presents an original composition The Stanley Bridge Suite that demonstrates how these harmonic concepts are used in modern orchestral jazz. A brief history of impressionism is included, followed by a chapter showing the increasing prevalence of impressionist harmony in jazz over the years. Because The Stanley Bridge Suite was arranged for an orchestral jazz ensemble the makeup of the modern jazz orchestra is also discussed. The final chapter analyzes the thesis composition in detail, showing where and how the various Debussy techniques were incorporated in the work. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank Professors Al Henderson and Dr. Mark Chambers for their guidance and assistance.
