Langston Hughes’s poetry is meant to be read aloud. This is the first thing that we notice when reading Hughes’s work: the simplicity of the diction, the repetition of phrases, and the overall rhythm of the pieces feel ready to jump off the page to be spoken. There is a reason for this. Despite the overarching positioning of Hughes as the “poet laureate” of black culture, reading his later works without this lens provides an intriguing view on the way that his poetry is perceived (Rampersad 3). The problem with reading Hughes as merely a stand-in of Harlem Renaissance poetry is that it ignores a key influence on Hughes’s writing, namely jazz. Since he was writing in a period when jazz was at the forefront of society, it is reasonable that his poetry would be effected by its intricacies and forms. As a result, his poems are more than just effected by jazz’s intricacies and forms.

  • Devilish Echoes: Goethe's Faust and Its Modern American Interpretations
Devilish Echoes: Goethe’s Faust and Its Modern American Interpretations By Caleb Miller Of all the devilish motifs that are propagated in America, none may be as sinister as the devil’s familiar. My first encounter with this idea was from the Grateful Dead, and their 1970 studio version of “Friend of the Devil”: Ran into the devil, babe, he loaned me 20 bills… I ran down to the levee, but the devil caught me there, Took my 20 dollar bill and he vanished in the air. (The Grateful Dead) The condemned folk hero is nothing new to art, or even popular culture. In 1808, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe produced one of the most well-known works of German stage: Faust: The Tragedy Part One (Ramm). Considered an integral part of the German “Classics”, Faust by definition carries a mythological background, one that is rooted in alchemy and the truth. It’s author, Goethe, also came to fruition as an artist during the “Sturm und Drang1” period of German art and philosophy, which turned the inquisitiveness of the Enlightenment on its head and attacked everything man had created to remove himself from the natural essence of being (Pausch 39). In order to unify these different motifs and storylines in Faust, Goethe added another piece to the myth: Gretchen, the pure and devout object of Faust’s infernal desires (Ramm). The story, as told by Goethe, begins in heaven, where God and Mephistopholes strike a deal that allows Mephistopholes to tempt Faust with his wanton desires (von Goethe 15). Dr. 1 “Storm and Stress” Faust is a cynical and dying genius who has devoted his life prior to the story to science and philosophy.

" Ra:IN " (pronounced "rah'een")----is an amazing unique, powerful new rock trio consisting of PATA (guitar-Tomoaki Ishizuka), one of the guitarists from the legendary Japanese rock band X Japan, michiaki (bass-Michiaki Suzuki), originally from another legendary Yokohama based rock band TENSAW, and Tetsu Mukaiyama (drums), who supported various bands and musicians such as Red Warriors and CoCCo. " Ra:IN " 's uniqueness comes from its musical eloquence. The three-piece band mainly delves into instrumental works, and the band's combination of colorful tones and sounds, along with the tight playing only possible with top-notch skilled players, provides an overwhelming power and energy that is what " ROCK " is all about. • INTRODUCTION: BLUE NOTES TOWARD a NEW JAZZ DISCOURSE I. Authority and Authenticity in Jazz Historiography Most Books and Article
INTRODUCTION: BLUE NOTES TOWARD A NEW JAZZ DISCOURSE MARK OSTEEN, LOYOLA COLLEGE I. Authority and Authenticity in Jazz Historiography Most books and articles with "jazz" in the title are not simply about music. Instead, their authors generally use jazz music to investigate or promulgate ideas about politics or race (e.g., that jazz exemplifies democratic or American values,* or that jazz epitomizes the history of twentieth-century African Americans); to illustrate a philosophy of art (either a Modernist one or a Romantic one); or to celebrate the music as an expression of broader human traits such as conversa- tion, flexibility, and hybridity (here "improvisation" is generally the touchstone). These explorations of the broader cultural meanings of jazz constitute what is being touted as the New Jazz Studies. This proliferation of the meanings of "jazz" is not a bad thing, and in any case it is probably inevitable, for jazz has been employed as an emblem of every- thing but mere music almost since its inception. As Lawrence Levine demon- strates, in its formative years jazz—with its vitality, its sexual charge, its use of new technologies of reproduction, its sheer noisiness—was for many Americans a symbol of modernity itself (433). It was scandalous, lowdown, classless, obscene, but it was also joyous, irrepressible, and unpretentious. The music was a battlefield on which the forces seeking to preserve European high culture met the upstarts of popular culture who celebrated innovation, speed, and novelty. It 'Crouch writes: "the demands on and respect for the individual in the jazz band put democracy into aesthetic action" (161).

  • The Ghikas House on Hydra: from Artists’ Haven to Enchanted Ruins
The Ghikas House on Hydra: From Artists’ Haven to Enchanted Ruins HELLE VALBORG GOLDMAN Norwegian Polar Institute We sat on the terrace under the starry sky and talked about poetry, we drank wine, we swam, we rode donkeys, we played chess—it was like life in a novel. (Ghikas, quoted in Arapoglou 56) Introduction The Greek island of Hydra has become known for the colony of expatriate painters and writers that became established there in the 1950s and 60s (Genoni and Dalziell 2018; Goldman 2018). Two ‘literary houses,’ the homes of several of the island’s most well-known foreign residents during that era—the Australian couple, writers George Johnston and Charmian Clift, and Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen—have become places of pilgrimage for aficionados of Australian literature and popular music. Visitors wend through the maze of car- less, stone-paved lanes, asking for directions along the way, in order to stand outside the objects of their quests. Standing in the small public courtyard in front of the Johnstons’ house, or the tight laneway fronting the Cohen house, there is not much to see—the houses are quiet, the doors closed, the stone and white-washed walls surrounding the properties, which are typical of Hydra, are high. This doesn’t keep people from coming. They can picture in their minds’ eyes what is on the other side of the walls, having seen photographs of the writers at work and leisure inside the houses, and having read the books and listened to the songs that were written while the Johnstons and Cohen were in residence.
