Johnny O'Neal, born October 10, 1956 in Detroit, Michigan, is an American neo-bop jazz pianist and vocalist. His playing ranges from the technically virtuosic to the tenderest of ballad interpretations. Though unique in style, he is influenced by many jazz elders, including Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum. He has led many recording dates with jazz heavyweights such as Russell Malone and performed with Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, , Nancy Wilson, Joe Pass and Kenny Burrell. He was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers for two years from 1982-1983 and made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1985.

On the recommendation of Oscar Peterson, O'Neal portrayed Art Tatum in the 2004 movie “Ray”, convincingly recreating Tatum's sound on the song "Yesterdays". In an interview, pianist Mulgrew Miller said, "In my generation of musicians there are two artists who are probably the most naturally talented. They both happen to be from Detroit. One is Kenny Garrett, the saxophonist. The other is pianist Johnny O’Neal. There are so many outstanding things about Johnny’s playing. Number one, the touch. Johnny has a million dollar touch. Very few people touch the piano like that to get that kind of sound and feeling. The other thing is his feeling of swing, which is so natural. Then there’s Johnny’s personality, so engaging. And Johnny can play a ballad like few people, if any, I think he’s a very special artist." Pianist and jazz luminary Barry Harris stated, “ Johnny is a very special cat - if ever somebody sounded like Art Tatum, it’s him - he’s got it all.” Noted saxophonist Lou Donaldson called Johnny, “the king of the piano”.

This concert is underwritten by a generous grant from the Shearer Family Fund of TFEC on behalf of R. Scott Shearer

Order a T-shirt from our online store or pick one up at one of our events - help spread the word that jazz is alive in Central Pennsylvania! 9. Central PA Friends of Jazz - Track of the Month by Paul Haidet (@myheroistrane) . Herbie Hancock “Tell Me a Bedtime Story” from the LP “Fat Albert Rotunda” . Sure, he wrote so many great tunes, we could easily be talking here about “Watermelon Man,” “Cantaloupe Island,” “Chameleon,” or even the masterpiece “Maiden Voyage.” But, as Herbie himself said in his autobiography “Possibilities”, “We all have a natural human tendency to take the safe route – to do the thing we know will work – rather than taking a chance. But that’s the antithesis of jazz, which is all about being in the present.” In 1969, the safe route in jazz was, ironically, to play free, out, and loud. Amid this milieu, Herbie accepted an invitation to compose music for the animated Fat Albert cartoon series, and fused jazz with funk to produce an album that would forecast the groundbreaking work of the Head Hunters four years later. Right in the middle of the album comes this track – possibly the most beautiful, most haunting tune ever composed in jazz. It is a wonder to me that more artists don’t cover this song. . Herbie Hancock — piano, electric piano; Joe Henderson — tenor sax, alto flute; Joe Farrell — tenor sax; Garnett Brown — trombone; Johnny Coles — trumpet, flugelhorn; Joe Newman — trumpet; Buster Williams — electric & acoustic bass; Albert "Tootie" Heath, Bernard Purdie — drums; Eric Gale — guitar . JOIN THE CPFJ YOUTH BAND

Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band almost 30 years ago. Ron Waters is the Director for the CPFJ Youth Band. There is no tuition fee and all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome. The band is open to all school age musicians - grade school through high school. All applicants are accepted without audition Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. A professional arranger, composer and trumpet player, he finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year round including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, JazzMobile and many other events. Not only do the students get wonderful experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same interests. This ensemble offers a different experience than most High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band is also not restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets, trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all instruments are welcome - we have had almost every imaginable instrument….cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in past bands. COME JOIN THE FUN!! 10. Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email at [email protected] CPFJ Membership Application 2017 Spring Concert Series
