This does not mean the named ensemble will solely perform the works of that artist, but invoking these names reminds us, and our audience, of our music’s great history and its interconnectedness. In addition, ensemble coaches will incorporate important aspects of each artist’s work into their ensemble teaching throughout the year. The named ensembles and their coaches are: • The Dave Brubeck Ensemble, in the spirit of integrating arts, coached by Ulysses Owens Jr. • The Jelly Roll Morton Ensemble, in the spirit of interpreting the original meanings of jazz, coached by Doug Wamble • The Dizzy Gillespie Ensemble, in the spirit of innovation, dance, Afro-Latin music, humor, and teaching, coached by Elio Villafranca • The Max Roach Ensemble, in the spirit of Civil Rights experimentation and understanding of the African Diaspora, coached by Ulysses Owens Jr. • The Mary Lou Williams Ensemble, in the spirit of stride piano, arranging, and intellectual discourse on music techniques and meaning, coached by Bruce Williams • The Duke Ellington Ensemble (Artist Diploma Ensemble), in the spirit of being ambassadors to the world, coached by Ben Wolfe. About the Artists Ted Nash Faculty member Ted Nash enjoys a career as a performer, conductor, composer, arranger, and educator. He was born in Los Angeles into a musical family (his father, Dick Nash, and uncle, the late Ted Nash, were both well-known jazz and studio musicians). Nash is a co-founder of the New York-based Jazz Composers Collective, a musician-run, nonprofit innovative entity dedicated to presenting the original works of composers pushing the boundaries of self-expression. Nash is also a long-standing member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Nash has become one of the most significant jazz composers of the 21st century. His recordings have received widespread critical acclaim, appearing on “best of” lists in the New York Times, the New Yorker, and the Boston Globe. Nash won two Grammy Awards in 2017 for Presidential Suite: Eight Variations on Freedom, his most significant work. Inspired by great political speeches of the 20th century on the theme of freedom, Presidential Suite is rich with social and political awareness. Ben Wolfe Bassist, composer, and faculty member Ben Wolfe, born in Baltimore, has worked with Woody Shaw, Junior Cook, Jimmy Cobb, Dakota Staton, and the Mel Lewis Orchestra. He has performed with Harry Connick Jr. in live concerts and on TV and radio. Wolfe was a member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet until the group disbanded. He has created four albums of his own compositions and arrangements: 13 Sketches (1996) and Bagdad Theater (1997), Murray’s Cadillac (Amosaya Records, 2000), and My Kinda Beautiful (Planet Arts Recordings, 2004). His other recordings as a leader include Ben Wolfe Quintet: Live at Smalls (2011), From Here I See (2013), and The Whisperer (2015). Wolfe has also recorded more than a dozen albums and soundtracks with artists including Wynton Marsalis, James Moody, Marcus Roberts, Branford Marsalis, Eric Reed, Benny Green, Carl Allen, and Diana Krall. With Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, he has performed with Joe Henderson, Doc Cheatham, Jon Hendricks, Harry “Sweets” Edison, and Billy Higgins, among others. He was recently awarded a grant from Chamber Music America’s New Works: Creation and Presentation Program, funded through the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Wolfe has been a College Division faculty member since 2002 and an Evening Division faculty member since 2010.
