Johnny O'Neal, born October 10, 1956 in Detroit, Michigan, is an American neo-bop jazz pianist and vocalist. His playing ranges from the technically virtuosic to the tenderest of ballad interpretations. Though unique in style, he is influenced by many jazz elders, including and Art Tatum. He has led many recording dates with jazz heavyweights such as Russell Malone and many others. He moved to New York City to perform with Clark Terry in 1981, and also landed a regular job at the Blue Note, accompanying such greats as , , Nancy Wilson, Joe Pass and Kenny Burrell. He was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers for two years from 1982-1983 and made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1985.

On the recommendation of Oscar Peterson, O'Neal portrayed Art Tatum in the 2004 movie “Ray”, convincingly recreating Tatum's sound on the song "Yesterdays". A 2006 DVD "Tight" captured O'Neal at the height of his powers. In an interview, pianist Mulgrew Miller said, "In my generation of musicians there are two artists who are probably the most naturally talented. They both happen to be from Detroit. One is , the saxophonist. The other is pianist Johnny O’Neal. There are so many outstanding things about Johnny’s playing. Number one, the touch. Johnny has a million dollar touch. Very few people touch the piano like that to get that kind of sound and feeling. The other thing is his feeling of swing, which is so natural. Then there’s Johnny’s personality, so engaging. And Johnny can play a ballad like few people, if any. I’ve always held his talent in the highest regard, and I think he’s a very special artist." Pianist and jazz luminary Barry Harris stated, “ Johnny is a very special cat - if ever somebody sounded like Art Tatum, it’s him - he’s got it all.” Noted saxophonist Lou Donaldson called Johnny, “the king of the piano”.

We hope you will come out and hear this wonderful artist in the unique Capitol Room at the Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center - food and drink will be available in the concert’s cabaret setting... . 10. 9. 12. We’re starting a new feature here at the ViBE, called “Around the Town” . In this column, we’ll be posting reviews and news from recurring and one-time gigs in the area, kind of like a companion guide to some of the great music that can be found in our “One Time Only” and “Standing Gigs” listings. Enjoy! . The Timeless Power of the Big Band A R O U ND T H E T O W N by Paul Haidet . I was not alive in the 40s, so I have no way of knowing what it was like to hear bands like Basie, Goodman, Ellington, or the Dorseys. In fact, there are very few folks still alive who can say that they were actually there in person to hear such bands. We are left to speculate what it must have been like, watching those old news reels, looking at those pictures from the Savoy and Wonderland Ballrooms, and listening to those scratchy recordings. No, I wasn’t there, but listening to the River City Big Band playing “On the Sunny Side of the Street” this past Monday night, I could imagine myself in 1945, on the floor amid the fox trotters as the band belted out tune after tune. . I was not alive in the 50s, so I wasn’t there to take the first trip down Route 66 with its composer, Bobby Troup. In fact, as a child of the 70s, I only knew Bobby Troup as Dr. Joe Early on the television show Emergency ! How sad is that? However, listening to Cathy Chemi sing the tune with the River City Big Band, I could imagine myself in a brand new Chevy motoring west on that classic highway, top down, Nat King Cole and the Band blaring through the radio. . I was born in the mid 60s, so I was too young to remember introduce his Swingin’ New Big Band with a tune called “Basically Blues” for the Pacific Jazz label. I wasn’t there for that one either, but I can imagine the excitement people felt when they heard the band play the song live at the Chez in Hollywood on September 29th, 1966. You can hear the crowd’s excitement bursting through the speakers when you play the record. It must have sounded something like the River City Big Band opening their set with “Basically Blues.” . I was alive in the 70s, and should have known better, but, unfortunately, as a 10-year old, all I wanted to hear was rock music. So, I missed all of the crazy experimentation that was going on with the big bands, like Don Ellis pushing boundaries at the Fillmore, or Thad Jones and Mel Lewis bearing the modern torch at the Village Vanguard. I missed all of that futuristic excitement and promise. Luckily, the River City Big Band delivered once again, with a funky Ellington-meets-Allen-Toussaint version of “Caravan”. . Well, here we are in 2017, and, my friends, I can honestly say that the big band is alive and well, and just happens to be playing every third Monday of each month at the River City Blues Club on Cameron Street in Harrisburg. Courtesy of leaders Steve Rudolph and Bill Perbetsky, this is a band for the ages, literally. In addition to Rick Hirsch’s amazingly creative arrangements of standards from all eras, you can even hear an original or two, thoroughly modern and tailor-made for the times. More importantly, you can experience for yourself the kind of energy that no other type of ensemble can match. Sure, rock bands may have hundreds of thousands of watts of electricity behind them, but who wants to listen to Three Mile Island? No, this energy is human, breathing life into every note. This is the energy of the soul. While the nay-sayers may grouse that swing (and jazz in general) is dead, big bands keep coming back, era after era. There is a reason for that, and it can be found every third Monday down on Cameron Street. . This evenings performers were: VOCALIST Cathy Chemi - SAXES: Tom Strohman - Ryan Kauffman - Rick Hirsch - Dave Wilson - Michael Druck - TROMBONES - Dan Tomassone - Mike Yinger - Ron Axsom - Steve Shifffer - TRUMPETS - Skip Stine - Bill Perbetsky - Scott Ainscough - Barry Long - BASS Steve Meashey - DRUMS - Kevin Lowe - PIANO - Steve Rudolph . The Music: Basically Blues (arr. Phil Wilson) - On the Sunny side of the Street - Beyond the Sea (arr. Frank Mantooth) - Route 66 (Chemi) Embraceable You (Chemi) I Thought About You (Chemi) I Remember You (Chemi) - Caravan (arr, Mike Tomaro) - Angel Eyes (Al Cobine) - Poono Git Down (Rick Hirsch) - Matisse (Ted Nash) - My Romance (Mark Taylor) - Nica’s Dream (arr. Steve Rudolph) - My (arr. Steve Rudolph) - Katy (Sammy Nestico) - Big Swing Face ( Buddy Rich) . Join us every 3rd Monday - Food and drink available during the performance - Free parking - it'll be swinging!! $10 at the door...

NEWSHIRTS AVAILABLE FROM C.P.F.J.

Order a T-shirt from our online store or pick one up at one of our events - help spread the word that jazz is alive in Central Pennsylvania! 10. Did you watch the Grammy Awards this year? Did you notice that once again no Jazz awards were presented on the “big show”. No Classical, Gospel, Roots, Bluegrass, Blues, Folk, Reggae, World Music, Spoken Word, Musical Theater, Soundtrack or any other awards were given on the air either. For an organization whose mission was originally “to preserve and sustain jazz and classical music” this homogenized television program has left a lot to be desired for many years and in the process left out many of the world’s most talented musicians. Much like in past years, most of the jazz honors at this year’s Grammys were handed out during the pre-telecast ceremony. More than 65 awards were announced during the pre-telecast, which is held at a nearby venue to make room for more performances and tributes during the main event – which has always been geared towards mainstream musical preferences. The bottom line - art rarely wins popularity contests. Education is the only thing that can raise the level of awareness in our citizens. Our mission must be to become better educators. Do you love jazz... poetry... painting...sculpture? Take the time to explain your favorite form of art to your grand kids, your co-workers, your church members...anyone who will listen. Tell them the reasons art has affected your life, and the way it has changed your perspective. Invite them to concerts, museums, or lectures – show them there is more to life than what the pop/commercial world has to offer. Buy them a ticket, a book, a CD, or a download. Post art on Facebook or Twitter. Share a link on YouTube or do it the old fashioned way - send a letter while there is still a Post Office in your neighborhood. We cannot simply complain about the lack of sensitivity in the world, we must be motivated to share our love for the arts with all people. Get them involved, show them how good you feel after hearing a great concert, reading a moving poem, seeing a meaningful photograph. If you are a musician, painter, poet - spend the time it takes to become as good at your craft as you possibly can - great art can change the world and you’ll never know how good your art can be until you’ve devoted many serious hours to improving your work. We also need to let our representatives in Washington and Harrisburg know how we feel and tell them that funding for the arts in our schools is necessary for complete development of our young people. This is a proven scientific fact. We will also need to encourage our representatives to rescue the National Endowment for the Arts - already a minuscule line item in our nation’s budget - from the bean counter approach of many in Washington. We have work to do - read, think, share....promote the arts! by Steve Rudolph . For those of you who were wondering who won the Jazz Grammys - here is a list of the winners and a source of some great music for you to share. Don’t stop with this list - the other nominees in each category were simply amazing as well - check them out at https://www.grammy.com/nominees

Central PA Friends of Jazz - Track of the Month by Paul Haidet (@myheroistrane) . Remember back when records came with liner notes that gave information about what you were hearing on the album? In this monthly column, the ViBE collides the new with the old by suggesting a tune to download or stream from iTunes, Spotify, YouTube or your favorite music service, and providing “liner notes” from one of the CPFJ musicians or jazz enthusiasts. Enjoy! . and the Magic Triangle – Seven Minds from the album Clifford Jordan - sax; Cedar Walton - piano; - bass; Billy Higgins - drums. . According to critic , “Clifford Jordan was a fine inside/outside tenor player who somehow held his own with in the 1964 Charles Mingus Sextet.” On 1975’s Seven Minds , Jordan teams up with a rhythm section of Cedar Walton, Sam Jones, and Billy Higgins – a magic triangle indeed! The real highlight here is Cedar Walton’s swirling piano solo. Combined with the urgency of the song’s underlying changes, this track makes me feel like I am walking across an open field amid a snow squall in the bottom half of January. Groundhog says six more weeks of winter? No worries – just put on this track and embrace the stark beauty that the season affords! . JOIN THE CPFJ YOUTH BAND

Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band almost 30 years ago. Ron Waters is the Director for the CPFJ Youth Band. There is no tuition fee and all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome. The band is open to all school age musicians - grade school through high school. All applicants are accepted without audition Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. A professional arranger, composer and trumpet player, he finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year round including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, JazzMobile and many other events. Not only do the students get wonderful experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same interests. This ensemble offers a different experience than most High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band is also not restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets, trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all instruments are welcome - we have had almost every imaginable instrument….cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in past bands. WANTED: FRIENDLY , OUTGOING , DETERMINED VOLUNTEER

CPFJ is seeking a Volunteer Coordinator - someone to schedule our loyal and dependable crew of volunteers for all of our concerts, festivals and other events throughout the year. The job can be done from home with your own computer or you can visit the CPFJ office to make your contacts. Most of the communication is done through email, with a few phone calls necessary. On the day of the event, the V.C . will greet the volunteers at the venue and instruct them in their duties for that day. The V.C. then supervises the volunteers and acts as the troubleshooter for the day. Staff support is always available when needed.

If you love jazz and want to be more involved, give us a call at 540-1010.
