Berlin is our passion. Dear Readers, Berlin’s economy continues on the road to success. Once again, 2016 was an eventful and dynamic year. A key factor in this success is the fact that Berlin has established itself as Germany’s innovation capital. Thirteen of Germany’s DAX 30 companies, several multination- als and many influential German small and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) are digitizing their products, services and processes in Berlin. Berlin’s deep pool of international talent and inspirational startup scene are key criteria for the established companies operating devel- opment centers here. As the capital city’s startup scene continues to grow, it is producing a new class of SMEs that are driving innovation for sustained economic growth. The numbers are clear: The total sum of all employees in Berlin startups show the founders’ scene to be the city’s fifth largest employer. Currently at 13,200 employees, this figure has doubled in the last three years. Our statistics underscore this development. Among those projects supported by Berlin Partner, one in three jobs is created by a startup. With Start Alliance Berlin, Berlin Partner is helping founders grow internationally. Launched in Tel Aviv at the end of 2015, we have expanded Start Alliance Berlin to include three other leading startup cities – New York, Paris and Shanghai. Berlin Partner also toured Europe with its Berlin Pop-up Lab, showcasing its “Startup meets Grownup” exhibition with collaborative projects involving established companies and startups from Berlin. Bringing experienced players together with young founders will continue to play a key role in our activities for 2017.
