Such graphic skeletal designs were far from the conventional use of technique, in which incredibly thin veneers are cut to a design, pieced together and applied to a solid wooden base. Studio Job turned heads, and created an appetite for the technique that – as the Perished cabinet’s appearance at auction suggests – has not diminished. Veneer marquetry evolved in the 16th century from the idea of stone inlays and intarsia. A new jigsaw blade made it possible to cut precious woods into ever thinner sheets; the technique swept through Flanders and into France, with cabinetmaker André-Charles Boulle leading the way at Versailles. Her generation at the RCA – an outstanding cohort which artist and RCA tutor Paul Nash (1889–1946) subsequently hymned as ‘an outbreak of talent’ – included her close friends Eric Ravilious (1903–1942) and Edward Bawden (1903–1989), as well as future giants of British painting such as John Piper (1902–1992). Marx’s own artistic talents were prodigious: she excelled as a textile designer, an author, designer and illustrator of children’s books, a printmaker and a painter. -

Miller This dissertation examines the adult’s endeavor to revisit childhood trauma in four sets of literary texts that are not typically studied together. These works, all published after 1968, address the central problem of revisiting childhood trauma in order to open a potential for mourning and sometimes for healing. -

She offers individual, small and large group instruction in hand weaving and dyeing. Myra is a member of Las Arañas Spinners and Weavers Guild and Fiber to Finish Guild. Decorative and Functional Uses of Paper on Furniture Angela Meincke, Chris White, Kim Nichols n this article we will give an introduction to the wide variety of papers used on wooden surfaces and Iexamples of examination and treatments which were undertaken at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. It is important to address the treatment of paper on wood surfaces because of the significant information, context and value that paper components add. The presence of paper on wooden surfaces can pose unique challenges because of both its fragile nature and the relative infrequency with which it appears on furniture. The delicacy of paper requires conserva- tors to take special care when treating a wooden object that includes a paper component. It is important to emphasize that any treatment of the object must consider the effect upon the paper portions in order to avoid exacerbating problems and to ensure the future stability of the paper. Solutions that improve the structural stability of the furniture but neglect to consider the paper components are incomplete. Careful consideration of the survival of paper components is an important aspect of furniture treatments. Over the past few months we were able to study and treat several wooden objects with attached paper in the extensive collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Once this project started we continued to investigate examples available in other museums and private collections. The opportunity to work on a large group of such objects has given us an understanding of the techniques of paper manufacture, deco- ration and typical types of damage.
