ODISHA DISTRICT GAZETTEERS NABARANGPUR GOPABANDHU ACADEMY OF ADMINISTRATION [GAZETTEERS UNIT] GENERAL ADMINISTRATION DEPARTMENT GOVERNMENT OF ODISHA ODISHA DISTRICT GAZETTEERS NABARANGPUR DR. TARADATT, IAS CHIEF EDITOR, GAZETTEERS & DIRECTOR GENERAL, TRAINING COORDINATION GOPABANDHU ACADEMY OF ADMINISTRATION [GAZETTEERS UNIT] GENERAL ADMINISTRATION DEPARTMENT GOVERNMENT OF ODISHA ii iii PREFACE The Gazetteer is an authoritative document that describes a District in all its hues–the economy, society, political and administrative setup, its history, geography, climate and natural phenomena, biodiversity and natural resource endowments. It highlights key developments over time in all such facets, whilst serving as a placeholder for the timelessness of its unique culture and ethos. It permits viewing a District beyond the prismatic image of a geographical or administrative unit, since the Gazetteer holistically captures its socio-cultural diversity, traditions, and practices, the creative contributions and industriousness of its people and luminaries, and builds on the economic, commercial and social interplay with the rest of the State and the country at large. The document which is a centrepiece of the District, is developed and brought out by the State administration with the cooperation and contributions of all concerned. Its purpose is to generate awareness, public consciousness, spirit of cooperation, pride in contribution to the development of a District, and to serve multifarious interests and address concerns of the people of a District and others in any way concerned. Historically, the ―Imperial Gazetteers‖ were prepared by Colonial administrators for the six Districts of the then Orissa, namely, Angul, Balasore, Cuttack, Koraput, Puri, and Sambalpur. After Independence, the Scheme for compilation of District Gazetteers devolved from the Central Sector to the State Sector in 1957.

SWEET SOUL MUSIC REVUE A Change Is Gonna Come It is August 1955 in Mississippi and a 14-year-old African American, Emmet Louis Till, is being dragged out of his bed by white men. They brutally torture and then drown the boy, because Emmet had whistled at the white village beauty queen and called Bye, bye babe after her. The court acquits the murderers. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, an elderly African American lady, refuses to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. She is arrested and taken to court for violating segregation laws. These events in 1955 mark the beginning of the African American Civil Rights Movement, which will grow into a proud political force under the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King. By 1968 it will have put an end to arbitrary injustice caused by racial segregation in the U.S. There have been times that I thought I couldn‘t last for long / But now I think I‘m able to carry on / It‘s been a long time coming, but I know a change is gonna come – This soul anthem, composed by Sam Cooke in 1963, speaks of the hope for change during these times. Sam himself had been arrested for offences against the laws relating to civil disorders and rioting, because he and his band had tried to check in to a “whites only” motel. Closely linked to the Civil Rights Movement, soul music delivers the soundtrack for this period of political change and upheaval in the United States.

Into the woods feature From Linley to Lotusier, discover the designers championing the intricate 16th century craft of marquetry words by Camilla Apcar interiors a macassar ebony and On 17 October, bird’s eye maple cabinet by Studio Job will go under the hammer at Sotheby’s with an estimate of £40,000 to £60,000. It is one of an edition of six, made only in 2006, when the Dutch design duo were at the forefront of a renewed and revived interest in marquetry. Such graphic skeletal designs were far from the conventional use of technique, in which incredibly thin veneers are cut to a design, pieced together and applied to a solid wooden base. Studio Job turned heads, and created an appetite for the technique that – as the Perished cabinet’s appearance at auction suggests – has not diminished. Veneer marquetry evolved in the 16th century from the idea of stone inlays and intarsia. A new jigsaw blade made it possible to cut precious woods into ever thinner sheets; the technique swept through Flanders and into France, with cabinetmaker André-Charles Boulle leading the way at Versailles. A century later, elaborate veneer designs had outstripped most other decorative furniture techniques. “Marquetry is an extraordinary illusion, even in this day and age” At Decorex in September, bespoke specialist to express ourselves and our interests,” says co- Zelouf and Bell launched a number of designs founder Susan Zelouf. “We’re more interested in that offer a delightful contemporary approach to style and expression than woodworking.” marquetry, in their own way. “What interests us At the moment, geometric and repetitive patterns is not so much the making for its own sake, but are inspiring the duo, such as a credenza with 22,000 the ability to use different techniques as a way triangles of macassar ebony inlaid into a grid of pale pink sycamore (Othello, £28,000).

Sparrow Discography by Mike Callahan, David Edwards & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Sparrow Records Discography Sparrow is a Contemporary Christian label founded in 1976 by Billy Ray Hearn. Hearn was the A&R Director for Word Records’ Myrrh label, founded a few years earlier also as a Contemporary Christian label. Sparrow also released records under their Birdwing subsidiary. Hearn’s Sparrow label was in competition with Hearn’s old boss, Word Records, and was quite successful. Even today, Sparrow is among the top Christian labels. Hearn sold the label to EMI in 1992, and it was placed under the Capitol Christian Music Group. Sparrow signed a distribution agreement with MCA in April, 1981 to release their product in the secular market while the regular Sparrow issues were distributed to Christian stores and Christian radio stations.
