Into the woods feature From Linley to Lotusier, discover the designers championing the intricate 16th century craft of marquetry words by Camilla Apcar interiors a macassar ebony and On 17 October, bird’s eye maple cabinet by Studio Job will go under the hammer at Sotheby’s with an estimate of £40,000 to £60,000. It is one of an edition of six, made only in 2006, when the Dutch design duo were at the forefront of a renewed and revived interest in marquetry. Such graphic skeletal designs were far from the conventional use of technique, in which incredibly thin veneers are cut to a design, pieced together and applied to a solid wooden base. Studio Job turned heads, and created an appetite for the technique that – as the Perished cabinet’s appearance at auction suggests – has not diminished. Veneer marquetry evolved in the 16th century from the idea of stone inlays and intarsia. A new jigsaw blade made it possible to cut precious woods into ever thinner sheets; the technique swept through Flanders and into France, with cabinetmaker André-Charles Boulle leading the way at Versailles. A century later, elaborate veneer designs had outstripped most other decorative furniture techniques. “Marquetry is an extraordinary illusion, even in this day and age” At Decorex in September, bespoke specialist to express ourselves and our interests,” says co- Zelouf and Bell launched a number of designs founder Susan Zelouf. “We’re more interested in that offer a delightful contemporary approach to style and expression than woodworking.” marquetry, in their own way. “What interests us At the moment, geometric and repetitive patterns is not so much the making for its own sake, but are inspiring the duo, such as a credenza with 22,000 the ability to use different techniques as a way triangles of macassar ebony inlaid into a grid of pale pink sycamore (Othello, £28,000).

Her generation at the RCA – an outstanding cohort which artist and RCA tutor Paul Nash (1889–1946) subsequently hymned as ‘an outbreak of talent’ – included her close friends Eric Ravilious (1903–1942) and Edward Bawden (1903–1989), as well as future giants of British painting such as John Piper (1902–1992). Marx’s own artistic talents were prodigious: she excelled as a textile designer, an author, designer and illustrator of children’s books, a printmaker and a painter.

  • Le Mur Where Tradition Embraces the Avant Garde
LE MUR WHERE TRADITION EMBRACES THE AVANT GARDE Alexander Lamont’s designs are works of vitality, soul and character. The unique, hand-crafted pieces made with noble materials bring with them a sense of journey and discovery while communicating playfulness, texture and refined quality. The Le Mur collection for walls allows designers to infuse spaces with exquisite handwork, texture and dimensionality. Vertical surfaces are bought to life with precious shagreen, hand-cracked and burnished gesso and straw marquetry. Every square inch is controlled from preparing the raw material to dyeing and inlay, in Alexander Lamont’s renowned workshops. The finished works express a particular approach to innovation in design and technique; one that uncompromisingly pushes the boundaries of rare and hard-won traditions, maintaining exquisite quality while bringing contemporary, fresh ideas to long- adored materials. STUDIO COLLECTION Innovations in technique, colour and ambience bring gorgeous natural materials to sophisticated new levels. Contemporary designs use straw marquetry in fresh ways to create painterly, mosaic, linear, spatial or textural effect, blurring the boundaries between art and design. Pattern and direction are worked to make subtle trompe l’oeil onto vertical surfaces that appear alive with movement and play - light moving across emerging shapes or sweeping curvilinear lines. Drift I A surface of lines that rises, swells and falls like the wake of a ship. Corrugated and gliding, Drift makes gentle patterns that mix tonality and light creating a contemporary artwork for rooms and accent walls. Available in Verdigris and Wisteria. Panels 24” x 24” (61cm x 61cm) are made in 2 patterns that will be delivered in equal quantities according to project requirements.

  • Decorative and Functional Uses of Paper on Furniture Angela Meincke
Decorative and Functional Uses of Paper on Furniture Angela Meincke, Chris White, Kim Nichols n this article we will give an introduction to the wide variety of papers used on wooden surfaces and Iexamples of examination and treatments which were undertaken at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. It is important to address the treatment of paper on wood surfaces because of the significant information, context and value that paper components add. The presence of paper on wooden surfaces can pose unique challenges because of both its fragile nature and the relative infrequency with which it appears on furniture. The delicacy of paper requires conserva- tors to take special care when treating a wooden object that includes a paper component. It is important to emphasize that any treatment of the object must consider the effect upon the paper portions in order to avoid exacerbating problems and to ensure the future stability of the paper. Solutions that improve the structural stability of the furniture but neglect to consider the paper components are incomplete. Careful consideration of the survival of paper components is an important aspect of furniture treatments. Over the past few months we were able to study and treat several wooden objects with attached paper in the extensive collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Once this project started we continued to investigate examples available in other museums and private collections. The opportunity to work on a large group of such objects has given us an understanding of the techniques of paper manufacture, deco- ration and typical types of damage.

  • The Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergē Collection
26 September 2008 THE YVES SAINT LAURENT AND PIERRE BERGĒ COLLECTION “Pierre Bergé and I wished for our selection to reflect our favourite pieces and for it to evolve with them, quality being the only criterion to guide us.” Yves Saint Laurent Paris - Christie's is honoured to announce the sale of the Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé Collection, which will take place in Paris on the 23rd, 24th and 25th February 2009 at the Grand Palais, in association with the Pierre Bergé & Associates auctioneers. As in many instances where an artist’s signature style defines a décor, the word “Collection″ is uniquely deserved by that of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé. The works of art found in their respective apartments at the rue de Babylone and the rue Bonaparte, were brought together to become one of the most important collections ever to come onto the art market. A reflection of 50 years of passionate and detailed search for rare and unique pieces, this shared collection is a truly moving exhibition of their shared eye. It is one of the most sumptuous private collections of our time, a French paragon of quality and taste, consisting of masterpieces of Modern Art, Art Deco, European furniture and works of art, antiquities, Old Master and 19th century paintings and drawings. The works, amounting to more than 700 in total, are estimated at between 200 and 300 million Euros. Yves Saint Laurent bequeathed his joint share of the Collection to the Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent Foundation. Pierre Bergé has since decided to put the entire Collection up for sale and to create a new foundation dedicated mainly to scientific research and the fight against AIDS.
