The requirements for the next-generation radar are expected to be focused on providing defensive capabilities against emerging threats, such as slow and low flying aircraft, as well as for the system to be scalable and manoeuvrable. The US Army is also pushing ahead with upgrades to its fielded AN/ MPQ-64 Sentinel A3 radar systems as it looks to address similar growing threats on the battlefield, including from UAVs and cruise missiles. The upgraded radar, designated the Sentinel A4 and which has now progressed to its RfP phase, will also improve the service’s ability to counter manned fixed- and rotary-wing targets, as well as offering capabilities against future rocket, artillery and mortar threats. Up to 200 legacy systems could be upgraded by the beginning of the 2030s. By integrating new radar antenna technologies, the army intends to enhance the performance of the system by 75%, triple its search capabilities and double the radar’s tracking accuracy. In response to the changing operating environment, the army requires the Sentinel A4 to be capable of performing in contested environments, where it could encounter electronic attacks, anti-radiation weapons and direction-finding sensors. The service is also accelerating plans to integrate the Terminal High- Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) radar with the lower-tier Patriot system to better protect troops and assets from incoming missiles. US Army Defense Artillery School Commandant Brig Gen Randall McIntire said the plan is to feed information from the THAAD radar to the Patriot system through the Integrated Air and Missile Defense Battle Command System.     ELECTRONIC WARFARE FUNDAMENTALS NOVEMBER 2000 PREFACE Electronic Warfare Fundamentals is a student supplementary text and reference book that provides the foundation for understanding the basic concepts underlying electronic warfare (EW). This text uses a practical building-block approach to facilitate student comprehension of the essential subject matter associated with the combat applications of EW. Since radar and infrared (IR) weapons systems present the greatest threat to air operations on today's battlefield, this text emphasizes radar and IR theory and countermeasures. Although command and control (C2) systems play a vital role in modern warfare, these systems are not a direct threat to the aircrew and hence are not discussed in this book. This text does address the specific types of radar systems most likely to be associated with a modern integrated air defense system (lADS). To introduce the reader to EW, Electronic Warfare Fundamentals begins with a brief history of radar, an overview of radar capabilities, and a brief introduction to the threat systems associated with a typical lADS. The two subsequent chapters introduce the theory and characteristics of radio frequency (RF) energy as it relates to radar operations. These are followed by radar signal characteristics, radar system components, and radar target discrimination capabilities. The book continues with a discussion of antenna types and scans, target tracking, and missile guidance techniques. The next step in the building-block approach is a detailed description of countermeasures designed to defeat radar systems. The text presents the theory and employment considerations for both noise and deception jamming techniques and their impact on radar systems.

  • The Integration of Swedish and Dutch Forces in EU Naval Force Operation Atalanta, 2015
    In 2015, the Netherlands and Sweden provided a joint contri- bution to the EU’s counter-piracy military mission EUNAVFOR Operation Atalanta. During their three-month deployment to the area of operation, Swedish troops and enablers – including two Combat Boat 90 assault craft and two AW109 helicopters – were stationed on board the Dutch warship HNLMS Johan de Witt, which also hosted the Force Headquarters (FHQ) led by a Swedish Admiral. This kind of cooperation, in particular having a tactical headquarters led by one nation and the fl agship led by another, was quite unique. In general, the integration was considered to have been suc- cessful – to some extent surprisingly so. This report describes and analyses the planning and execution of the fusion of Dutch and Swedish forces, identifying key lessons that may be of value in similar future collaborations. National regulations and procedures, command and control structures, preparatory training and exercises, the chosen level of integration and per- sonal mindsets are among the issues discussed. The more I researched through books, correspondence, and through direct questions to several “Old & Bold” on Regimental Association Forums, the more I became determined to fill in this gap. The results are what you see in the following pages. Before I begin a list of acknowledgements let me recognize my two co-authors, for this is as much their work as well as mine. “PM” was instrumental in sharing his research on the support Corps, did countless hours of legwork, and never failed to dig up information on some of my arcane questions. “John” made me “THINK” British Army!
