Stepanov”, Republica Moldova Introduction The Geometridae moth is a very rich insect family in species and various regarding the sexual dimorphism. This is the second Lepidoptera family with about 23.000 described species occurring worldwide with the exception of the Polar Regions [8] and the most beautiful species being found in the tropics. The majority of the moth’s species are mostly nocturnal than diurnal. The Geometridae caterpillars are popularly called inchworms or loopers which are dangerous species causing the development of mass outbreaks which lead to defoliation of crops, forests, of trees and shrubs from parks and squares.

Abadjiev received 12.IV.2000 Abstract: The present article contains data for 197 Macrolepidoptera species from the stud ied area. One species—Hadena bicruris (Hufnagel, 1766) is new for the Balkan Peninsula (and for Bulgaria), Scopula corrivalaria (Kretschmar, 1862) and the subspecies, Diachrysia chryson deltaica Rakosy, 1996 are also new for the Bulgarian fauna. The occurrence of six more species has been confirmed. Two other species—Eupithecia biornata C hristoph, 1867 and Macrochilo cribrumalis (Hübner, 1793) were reported for the first time in the entomological literature for Bulgaria. The number of the new species in this region is about 190. Introduction There are very few data for the Macrolepidoptera fauna of the studied area. In the literature such data can be found only in the publications of Ganev & Beschkov (1987), Beshkow (1992), Beshkov (1993), Beshkow (1998). Four new species and 2 other species confirmed for Bulgaria were published in these articles. Data for 2 other rare species can be found there. Some of the new species for the country were illustrated in some of these articles. Some very interesting data concerning the family Noctuidae were included and commented by the senior author in his "An Annotated Systematic and Synonymic List of the Noctuidae of Bulgaria" (Beshkov, in press).

The first record of Lithostege fissurata Mabille, 1888 for Malta Island and for the fauna of Europe is presented. L. inanis Prout, 1941 is downgraded (again) to subspecies of L. fissurata. L. bifissana Rebel, 1911 is downgraded from species rank to synonymy of L. notata Bang-Haas, 1906. Key words. Lithostege fissurata , Geometridae, fauna of Europe, Malta, synonymy. Introduction When Müller ( 1 996) listed 9 1 5 European geometrid species, the fauna was thought to be well known. However, during the preparation of the book series "The Geometrid moths of Europe”, several new species were discovered. The new European checklist, which was published recently on the internet, contains 957 species (Hausmann 2004). The fauna of Malta included 52 geometrid moth species in Valletta (1973) and 57 species in Müller (1996). Sammut (2000) listed 89 geometrid species for the island, but many of these records are based on doubtful sources.

  • The Lepidoptera of Bucharest and Its Surroundings (Romania)
Travaux du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle © 30 Décembre Vol. LIV (2) pp. 461–512 «Grigore Antipa» 2011 DOI: 10.2478/v10191-011-0028-9 THE LEPIDOPTERA OF BUCHAREST AND ITS SURROUNDINGS (ROMANIA) LEVENTE SZÉKELY Abstract. This study presents a synthesis of the current knowledge regarding the Lepidoptera fauna of Bucharest and the surrounding areas within a distance up to 50 kilometers around the Romanian capital. Data about the fauna composition are presented: the results of the research work beginning with the end of the 19th century, as well the results of the research work carried out in the last 15 years. The research initiated and done by the author himself, led to the identification of 180 species which were unknown in the past. Even if the natural habitats from this region have undergone through radical changes in the 20th century, the area still preserves a quite rich and interesting Lepidoptera fauna. The forests provide shelter to rich populations of the hawk moth Dolbina elegans A. Bang-Haas, 1912, one of the rarest Sphingidae in Europe, and some other species with high faunistical and zoogeographical value as: Noctua haywardi (Tams, 1926) (it is new record for the Romanian fauna from this area), Catocala dilecta (Hübner, 1808), Tarachidia candefacta (Hübner, [1831]), Chrysodeixis chalcites (Esper, [1789]), Aedia leucomelas (Linnaeus, 1758), and Hecatera cappa (Hübner, [1809]). We also present and discuss the current status of the protected Lepidoptera species from the surroundings of the Romanian capital for the first time. Résumé. Ce travail représente une synthèse des connaissances actuelles concernant la faune de lépidoptères de Bucarest et de ses zones limitrophes sur un rayon de 50 km autour de la capitale de la Roumanie.

The weather initially was settled with hot days and warm evenings and nights. Towards the end of the week a few storms passed through which affected our sightings but not our enthusiasm. We explored some fantastic places, walking through flower-rich meadows and alpine pastures. It was a delight to see many butterflies and day-flying moths on our daily expeditions, and the sheer numbers of moths attracted to our overnight moth trap. Every day we were finding new and interesting specimens. Although the focus was butterflies and moths, nothing was neglected and we saw some superb mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects and plants. The Group gelled extremely well and many pairs of eyes seeking out new things to see were a bonus. We drew on everyone’s experience which made for a more interesting and inclusive week. In the end we saw 73 species of butterflies and 152 species of moths, which was a good return when wrapped up in the joy of this fabulous area.
