Rakosy In memoriam Profesor IRan Nemeú (19 ian. 1924– 10 ian. 2009) In memoriam Profesor Ioan Nemeú (19 ian. 1924 – 10 ian. In urma demersurilor sale, fluturele Parnassius apollo a devenit specie strict protejată pe teritoriul jud. Suceava. 1924– 10 ian.

  • Bugs & Beasties of the Western Rhodopes
Bugs and Beasties of the Western Rhodopes (a photoguide to some lesser-known species) by Chris Gibson and Judith Poyser [email protected] Yagodina At Honeyguide, we aim to help you experience the full range of wildlife in the places we visit. Generally we start with birds, flowers and butterflies, but we don’t ignore 'other invertebrates'. In the western Rhodopes they are just so abundant and diverse that they are one of the abiding features of the area. While simply experiencing this diversity is sufficient for some, as naturalists many of us want to know more, and in particular to be able to give names to what we see. Therein lies the problem: especially in eastern Europe, there are few books covering the invertebrates in any comprehensive way. Hence this photoguide – while in no way can this be considered an ‘eastern Chinery’, it at least provides a taster of the rich invertebrate fauna you may encounter, based on a couple of Honeyguide holidays we have led in the western Rhodopes during June. We stayed most of the time in a tight area around Yagodina, and almost anything we saw could reasonably be expected to be seen almost anywhere around there in the right habitat. Most of the photos were taken in 2014, with a few additional ones from 2012. While these creatures have found their way into the lists of the holiday reports, relatively few have been accompanied by photos. We have attempted to name the species depicted, using the available books and the vast resources of the internet, but in many cases it has not been possible to be definitive and the identifications should be treated as a ‘best fit’.

Olszak (453 m) in the Opawskie Mts. (Eastern Sudety Mts., SW Poland) is planned to be protected as an entomological-and-phytocenotic reserve. The main objectives of the protection are acidophilous oak forest and maple-linden slope forest being habitats of many rare species of moths and lacewings known from not numerous localities in Poland. Out of them, the populations of two unique in native lepidopteran fauna, saproxylic and phytosaprophagous species: Alabonia staintoniella (ZELL.) and Zanclognatha zelleralis (WCK.), are preserved here at their northernmost locality in Europe. KEY WORDS: Lepidoptera, Neuroptera, protection, nature reserve, Mt. Olszak, Sudety Mts. Owady Gór Opawskich należą do słabo zbadanych na tle innych obsza- rów górskich Polski. Zainteresowanie entomologów tym niewielkim pa- smem Sudetów Wschodnich wzrosło dopiero w połowie lat 90. zeszłego wie- ku. Obiektem badań były tu wybrane rodziny chrząszczy (Coleoptera) (KUŚ- KA 1998; MAZUR 2008) i szczególnie pluskwiaki różnoskrzydłe (Heteropte- ra) (LIS B., LIS J. A. 2002; HEBDA, LIS 2007), a w ostatnim dziesięcioleciu także motyle (Lepidoptera) i owady siatkoskrzydłe (Neuroptera), będące obecnie w końcowej fazie opracowania (dane własne autora). Dotychczaso- 112 T. BLAIK we badania nad dwoma ostatnimi grupami owadów wykazały znaczne bogac- two tutejszej fauny oraz obecność bardzo rzadko spotykanych w Polsce ga- tunków (BLAIK 2007, 2010; BLAIK, KOREK 2008).

INTRODUCTION The fauna of noctuoid moths (the families Erebidae and Noctuidae) of Kazakhstan is still poorly studied. Only the fauna of West Kazakhstan has been studied satisfactorily (Gorbunov 2011). On the faunas of other parts of the country, only fragmentary data are published (Lederer, 1853; 1855; Aibasov & Zhdanko 1982; Hacker & Peks 1990; Lehmann et al. 1998; Benedek & Bálint 2009; 2013; Korb 2013). In contrast to the West Kazakhstan, the fauna of noctuid moths of East Kazakhstan was studied inadequately.

Biodiversity Data Journal 1: e980. doi: 10.3897/ BDJ.1.e980 Abstract Given the limited success of past and current conservation efforts, an alternative approach is to preserve tissues and genomes of targeted organisms in cryobanks to make them accessible for future generations. Our pilot preservation project aimed to obtain, expertly identify, and permanently preserve a quarter of the known spider species diversity shared between Slovenia and Switzerland, estimated at 275 species. We here report on the faunistic part of this project, which resulted in 324 species (227 in Slovenia, 143 in Switzerland) for which identification was reasonably established. This material is now preserved in cryobanks, is being processed for DNA barcoding, and is available for genomic studies. • Funnel Weaver Spiders (Funnel-Web Weavers, Grass Spiders)
Colorado Arachnids of Interest Funnel Weaver Spiders (Funnel-web weavers, Grass spiders) Class: Arachnida (Arachnids) Order: Araneae (Spiders) Family: Agelenidae (Funnel weaver Figure 1. Female grass spider on sheet web. spiders) Identification and Descriptive Features: Funnel weaver spiders are generally brownish or grayish spiders with a body typically ranging from1/3 to 2/3-inch when full grown. They have four pairs of eyes that are roughly the same size. The legs and body are hairy and legs usually have some dark banding. They are often mistaken for wolf spiders (Lycosidae family) but the size and pattern of eyes can most easily distinguish them. Like wolf spiders, the funnel weavers are very fast runners. Among the three most common genera (Agelenopsis, Hololena, Tegenaria) found in homes and around yards, Agelenopsis (Figures 1, 2 and 3) is perhaps most easily distinguished as it has long tail-like structures extending from the rear end of the body. These structures are the spider’s spinnerets, from which the silk emerges. Males of this genus have a unique and peculiarly coiled structure (embolus) on their pedipalps (Figure 3), the appendages next to the mouthparts. Hololena species often have similar appearance but lack the elongated spinnerets and male pedipalps have a normal clubbed appearance. Spiders within both genera Figure 2. Adult female of a grass spider, usually have dark longitudinal bands that run along the Agelenopsis sp. back of the cephalothorax and an elongated abdomen. Tegenaria species tend to have blunter abdomens marked with gray or black patches. Dark bands may also run along the cephalothorax, which is reddish brown with yellowish hairs in the species Tegenaria domestica (Figure 4).

G. M. Bond1 and J. P. O’Connor2 1Department of Zoology and Animal Ecology, School of BEES, University College Cork, Distillery Fields, North Mall, Cork, Ireland. e-mail: <[email protected]> 2Emeritus Entomologist, National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin 2, Ireland. Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe.
