BIOGRAPHY OF PHILIP BENJAMIN HEYMANN Philip Heymann is the James Barr Ames Professor at Harvard Law School, Director of the Center for Criminal Justice there, and Professor at Harvard I s Kennedy School of Government where he directs the Program for Senior Managers in Government. He was Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Criminal Division of the u.S. Department of Justice from 1978-1981, Associate Watergate Special Prosecutor from 1973-1975, and, in the prior decade, held the following posts in the u.S. Department of State: Executive Assistant to the Undersecretary of State, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations, and head of the Bureau of Security and Consular Affairs. After clerking for Justice John Harlan of the U.S. Supreme Court he represented the U.s. government in the Solicitor General's Office from 1961-1965. As Director of the Center for Criminal Justice at Harvard, Professor Heymann has in recent years managed a number of projects designed to improve the criminal justice systems of countries seeking to create or preserve democratic institutions, including Guatemala, Colombia, South Africa, and Russia. He has written extensively on the subjects of management in government, combating corruption, and criminal justice and is co-author of a forthcoming book on strategies for dealing with terrorism. Heymann was independent counsel to the National Football League in the investigation of allegations of sexual harassment by the Ne\<l England Patriots and he chaired the pan~l of international experts proposing to the Goldstone Commission new procedures for conducting and handling mass demonstrations in South Africa. Professor Heymann has been married to Ann Ross Heymann since 1954. Their son Stephen is Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division of ~he U.S. Attorney's Office in Boston and is the father of two children, Paul and Rebecca. Their daughter Jody is Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School and is the mother of Benjamin and Jeremy Brewer. His father is Sidney P. Heymann of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. BIOGRAPHY OF WEBSTER LEE HUBBELL Honored as one of the Best Lawyers in America for the past four years. we~b HUbbe~l until recently was a managing, partner in the Rose Law F~rm of L~ttle Rock. He also has extensive public service experience, including as Little Rock Mayor and Chief Justice of the Arkansas Supreme court. A native of Little Rock, Hubbell served as mayor of the city from 1979-81, on the City Board of Directors from 1978-84 and in a number of other civic positions over the years. He has been active in the Arkansas Bar Association in the House of Delegates from 1976-79 and on the Executive Committee from 1978-80. Hubbell served as Chairman of the Bar Association's Committee on Ethics and Responsibility, where he was also the chief author of Arkansas' ethics statute. Since 1973, Hubbell has practiced law at the Rose Law Firm. He was promoted to partner in 1977 and managing partner in 1987. He interrupted his tenure at the firm only once - in 1984 - to serve as Chief Justice of the Arkansas supreme Court. ~ Lawyers in America has listed Hubbell for each of the past four years as among the top in his field. Hubbell was an excellent stuoent and athlete as a young man and was once drafted by the Chicago Bears - an offer he passed up to pursue a law degree at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville (1973). Hubbell received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1910. Hubbell has served on a number of boards and commissions including: Visiting Nurses Association of Pulaski County Member Board of Directors (1976-84), President (1978-82); Arkansas Arts Center, member Board of Directors (1985- 91), Treasurer (1980); Little Rock Downtown Partnership, member Board of Directors (1984-present); University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Natural Development Counsel (1986-present); University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Foundation, Little Rock Boys Club Board of Directors (198B-present). Hubbell is married to Suzanna Ward and the couple have four children, Walter, Rebecca, Caroline and'Keliey. BIOGRAPHY OF DREW S. DAYS, III Professor Days is a Professor of Law at Yale University School of Law. After practicing briefly with a labor law firm in Chicago, he entered the Peace Corps, serving as a volunteer in Honduras from 1967-1969. In the fall of 1969, Professor Days joined the staff of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund in New York City. At the Legal Defense Fund, he litigated cases in the areas of school desegregation, police misconduct and employment discrimination. Professor Days remained on the staff of the Legal Defense Fund (except for a two year teaching leave at Temple University Law School) until early 1977. In March, 1977, he was confirmed by the Senate to serve as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, having been nominated 1:0 that post by President Jimmy Carter. Professor Days served in that capacity until the end of 1980. In January, 1981, he joined the faculty of Yale University Law School, receiving tenure in 1986. In November, 1991, he was named to the Alfred M. Rankin Chair at the Law School. At Yale, his teaching and writing have been in the fields of civil procedure, federal jurisdiction, Supreme Court practice, antidiscrimination law, comparative constitutional law (Canada and the United States) and international human rights. Since 1988, he has also been the Director of the Orville H. Schell Jr. Center for International Human Rights at Yale Law School. Professor Days is a 1963 honors graduate. in English Literature of Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. He received his LL.B. degree from Yale University in 1966. Professor Days has been married since 1966 to Ann Ramsay Langdon, an artist and writer. They have two daughters, Alison, a junior at Brown University, and Elizabeth, a high school junior in the New Haven Public School system. .
