David Schulz/Gulf Breeze News The pungent smell of oil permeated Pensacola Beach at times over the weekend, but by Monday morning the only aroma of petroleum was coming from the assorted media satellite trucks that camped out near the Gulfside Pavilion. BY JOE CULPEPPER Gulf Breeze News [email protected] Three-hundred sixty-three students who braved years of tropical storms, an economic recession, a swine-flu outbreak and, incredibly, an oil spill in the nearby Gulf of Mexico ended their high school careers by being awarded diplomas as graduates of Gulf Breeze High School on Friday, June 4. Parents, grandparents, friends and supporters gathered in the Pensacola Civic Center, seemingly oblivious to a pass- ing thunderstorm rumbling overhead. In the end, the graduates exited into the adult world, bracing for the next challenge.

BY JASON THOMPSON Gulf Breeze News [email protected]

More than 200 seniors from the GBHS Class of 2010 participated in Project Graduation Friday night. The destination, which remains ‘classified’ until they arrive, was at The Hangout in Gulf Shores. Graduates got to listen to Between the Trees, a band that will perform on the 2010 Warped Tour, for the first couple of hours before being amazed by an illusionist and performers with fire. One of the main hits of the night was Danny Gibble getting on stage and doing some freestyle with the band. They were also subject to some contests, such as pie eating, watermelon eating and Coke chugging for some free Hangout t-shirts. Graduates enjoyed free food and drink throughout the night and 10 of them went home with Jason Thompson/Gulf Breeze News a check for $100. Danny GIbble does some freestyle for the crowd, while Elliott Cooper, Steven Vernali and others try their hand at Guitar Hero.

Jason Thompson/Gulf Breeze News Among the attractions at Project Graduation were some fire performers and fire breathers. Graduates also got to see some cards tricks from an illusionist.
