(Publié pour la première fois dans les « Cahiers de l’Asie du Sud-Est » N° 19 ») L'INCORPORATION DU ROYAUME DE SUKHOTHAY AU ROYAUME D'AYUDHYA PAR LE ROI PHRA BOROMOTRAYLOKANAT (1448-1488) : LE BOUDDHISME, INSTRUMENT POLITIQUE Gilles DELOUCHE La décadence relativement rapide du royaume de Sukhothay, puis sa disparition fane en tant qu'état indépendant à la mort du roi Phra Thammaracha IV (1419- 1438) ont fait l'objet de nombreuses recherches destinées à expliquer comment, en un peu moins d'un siècle et demi, il a pu passer de l'apogée à l'anéantissement. Des analyses déjà anciennes ont mis l'accent sur les préoccupations plus religieuses que temporelles des rois de Sukhothay après le règne du roi Rama Khamhaeng, tandis que des théories plus récentes, sans doute plus réalistes, s'intéressent plutôt à l'étouffement économique du royaume par la mainmise d'Ayudhya sur les voies fluviales de la Thailande centrale, prélude à son absorption 1 complète . The study was divided into 2 phases. Phase 1 was to investigate the present state and needs on managing Chinese language learning for Bilingual Schools (Thai – Chinese) under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration from the perspectives of the involved personnel in Bilingual Schools (Thai – Chinese) under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Phase 2 was to create guidelines on managing Chinese language learning for Bilingual Schools (Thai – Chinese) under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and to verify the accuracy and suitability of the guidelines by interviewing experts on teaching Chinese language and school management. A questionnaire, a semi-structured interview form, and an evaluation form were used as tools for collecting data. Percentage, mean, and Standard Deviation were employed for analyzing quantitative data. Modified Priority Needs Index (PNImodified) and content analysis were used for needs assessment and analyzing qualitative data, respectively. The results of this research found that the actual state of the Chinese language learning management for Bilingual Schools (Thai – Chinese) in all aspects was at a high level ( x =4.00) and the expected state of the Chinese language learning management for Bilingual Schools (Thai – Chinese) in the overall was at the highest level ( x =4.62). The difference between the actual state and the expected state were significant different at .01 level. -

Jeremias van Vliet, The Short History of the Kings of Siam, translated by Leonard Andaya from a transcription by Miriam J Verkuijl-van den Berg, edited by David K Wyatt, Bangkok, The Siam Society, 1975 iv, 97 pp. For a number of years historians concerned with early Ayutthaya have been aware that a chronicle version older than anything else extant had been compiled in Dutch by the early 17th-century VOC representative in Ayutthaya, Jeremias van Vliet, and its publication has been eagerly awaited for light it might shed on points which remain obscure in other texts. Now The Siam Society has provided in very attractive format a transcription of van Vliet’s original text with an English translation and a certain number of notes on the historiographic problems of the text and its relationship to other sources1. Van Vliet’s chronicle begins with a very interesting version of the history of the peninsula and lower Menam basin before the founding of Ayutthaya. Here van Vliet relates several stories which were current concerning the first king of Siam in ancient times - that he was a son of a Chinese emperor and had come to the peninsula abut 2000 years before, that he was a brahman named Phrommathep, and that Siam was founded by the Buddha himself. A long time later, about 300 years before van Vliet’s day, another son of a Chinese ruler, Chao Ui, arrived on the peninsula and became the Thao U Thong who founded Ayutthaya. -
Thailand Moderate Advancement in 2018, Thailand Made a Moderate Advancement in Efforts to Eliminate the Worst Forms of Child Labor
Thailand MODERATE ADVANCEMENT In 2018, Thailand made a moderate advancement in efforts to eliminate the worst forms of child labor. The government increased its Labor Inspectorate budget by 47 percent and allocated more resources to inspect high-risk workplaces. The rate of access to education and enrollment for migrant children has improved. The government also supported a training for 7,255 labor volunteers on the worst forms of child labor. The government hired 394 additional labor inspectors, including Department of Labor Protection and Welfare civil servants and other government employees, and 22 additional interpreters at Department of Labor Protection and Welfare offices and fishing port inspection centers. The government continued the information-sharing agreement with the U.S. National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to combat online child commercial sexual exploitation. Finally, the government continued to work directly with NGOs to open two additional Child Advocacy Centers, bringing the total to five in Thailand. However, children in Thailand engage in the worst forms of child labor, including in commercial sexual exploitation, sometimes as a result of human trafficking. Children also engage in Muay Thai fighting competitions without protective equipment. Although the government made meaningful efforts in all relevant areas during the reporting period, it does not meet the international standard for the minimum age of work. Enforcement of child labor laws remains a challenge due to an insufficient number of inspectors. I. PREVALENCE AND SECTORAL DISTRIBUTION OF CHILD LABOR Children in Thailand engage in the worst forms of child labor, including in commercial sexual exploitation, sometimes as a result of human trafficking. -

I certify that this thesis contains no documents previously written or published by anyone except where due reference is referenced in the dissertation itself. i Abstract This thesis is a contribution to two bodies of scholarship: first, the historical understanding of the modernisation process in Siam, and in particular the role of sport in the gradual pacification of violent forms of behaviour; second, one of the central bodies of scholarship used to analyse sport sociologically, the work of Norbert Elias and Eric Dunning on sport and the civilising process. Previous studies of the emergence of a more civilised form of behaviour in modern Siam highlight the imitation of Western civilised conducts in political and sporting contexts, largely overlooking the continued role of violence in this change in Siamese behaviour from the pre- modern to modern periods. This thesis examines the historical evidence which shows that, from around the 1900s, Siamese elites engaged in deliberate projects to civilise prevalent non-elites’ aggressive conducts. This in turn has implications for the Eliasian understanding of sports and civilising process, which emphasises their unplanned development alongside political and economic changes in Europe, at the expense of grasping the deliberate interventions of the Siamese elites. -

25 Chinese Temples in Bangkok Sources of Data for 19th-Century Sino-Thai Communities ChuimeiHo* 1. Introduction Modem Chinese communities in Thailand have been the subject of extensive research by social scientists and historians (e.g., Landon 1941; Skinner 1957, 1958; Coughlin 1960; Purcell 1951). Much empirical data has been collected regarding Chinese ethnic groups in 20th-century Thai society, but not nearly as much hard data has been made available for the study of the Chinese in Bangkok during the 19th century. The numerous observations by European travelers are too sketchy for serious analysis and contemporary Thai and Chinese documentary sources seem to be very rare. However, rich epigraphic data from the last two centuries survives within the Chinese community in Thailand. Much of this is still on public display inside Chinese temples and ancestral halls. Elsewhere in Southeast Asia, much Chinese epigraphic material has been compiled by historians (e.g., Chen & Tan 1970; Chen 1977; Franke & Chen 1982-87). Some I scholars have incorporated such material into broader studies of overseas Chinese culture (e.g., Salmon & Lombard 1977 for Jakarta). But in Thailand, no comprehensive survey of temple inscriptions has yet been published, apart from some of Franke's work (1976; 1991).1 In deed, researchers generally have not paid much attention to Chinese temples in Thailand. Among the few exceptions are Skinner (1957:84,138 and Coughlin (1960:94-100).2 In 1990 and 1991, the author visited twenty-eight Chinese temples3 as well as one Chinese and five Vietnamese Mahayana monasteries4 in Bangkok (Table 1: Fig.l ).5 These included all of the temples in Sampheng, Bangkok's traditional Chinatown, and several others in Thon Buri on the other side of the Chao Phraya River. -

Thammasat Review 2015, 18(1): 1-26 Affirmation of Shan Identities through Reincarnation and Lineage of the Classical Shan Romantic Legend ‘Khun Sam Law’ Khamindra Phorn Department of Anthropology & Sociology Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University [email protected] Abstract Khun Sam Law–Nang Oo Peim is an 18th-century legend popular among people in all walks of life in Myanmar’s Shan State. To this day, the story is narrated in novels, cartoons, films and songs. If Romeo and Juliet is a classical romance of 16th-century English literature, then Khun Sam Law–Nang Oo Peim, penned by Nang Kham Ku, is the Shan equivalent of William Shakespeare’s masterpiece. Based on this legend, Sai Jerng Harn, a former pop-star, and Sao Hsintham, a Buddhist monk, recast and reimagined the legendary figure as a Shan movement on the one hand, and migrant Shans in Chiang Mai as a Shan Valentine’s celebration and protector of Khun Sam Law lineage on the other. These two movements independently appeared within the Shans communities. This paper seeks to understand how this Shan legend provides a basic source for Shan communities to reimagine and to affirm their identities through the reincarnation and lineage. The pop-star claims to be a reincarnation of Khun Sam Law, while the migrant Shans in Chiang Mai, who principally hail from Kengtawng, claim its lineage continuity.
