Due to Kingdom: Animalia the shape of the two lower teeth, which are worn by many gomphothere genera (such as Phylum: Chordata Platybelodon, Archaeobelodon, Konobelodon, and Amebelodon), they are popularly known as "shovel tuskers." Class: Mammalia Order: Proboscidea Palaeobiology Family: †Gomphotheriidae Restoration of P. grangeri Platybelodon was previously believed to have fed in the swampy areas of grassy savannas, using Subfamily: †Amebelodontinae its teeth to shovel up aquatic and semi-aquatic vegetation. However, wear patterns on the teeth Genus: †Platybelodon suggest that it used its lower tusks to strip bark from trees, and may have used the sharp incisors that formed the edge of the "shovel" more like a modern-day scythe, grasping branches with its trunk and Borissiak, 1928 rubbing them against the lower teeth to cut it from a tree.[1] Species See also P. danovi Borissiak, 1928 (type) Gnathabelodon P. grangeri Osborn, 1929 Eubelodon Serbelodon P. beliajevae Alexeeva, 1971 Amebelodon P. tongxinensis Chen, 1978 P. grangeri skull Konobelodon P. dangheesis Wang and Qiu Torynobelodon 2002 References 1.
