September 2014 Dear Friend of Jesuit Retreat House,

I write this first letter to our Jesuit Retreat House community and friends A Place of Peace. with deep gratitude for having the opportunity to serve as the new Igniting Hearts. Executive Director beginning July 1. My personal journey of prayer and discernment leading to this inspiring new turn in my life has been blessed Board of Directors with a profound sense of feeling my life in God’s hands, and the belief that this role is truly the best use of my gifts in this phase of my life. I am ever- Rita Carfagna Chair inspired by the First Principle and Foundation of Ignatius, and the core image of “Finding God in all things.” I want to do all that I can to serve John V. Biernacki people individually and communally in ways that bring the gift of Ignatian Hugh Buchanan spirituality more deeply into their lives.

Elizabeth Cotter My 8-day silent directed retreat in June was one of the most powerful experiences of my life. I discovered a depth of presence with God unlike any time in my life. The Spiritual Exercises Martin Connell, S.J. brought forth an experience of God’s love and the life of Christ in a deeply moving and inspiring Frank DeSantis way. I have come away so wanting to find the right words and images that could inspire others to understand and make the time for such a life-giving gift. In pondering the words of Christ in Tina M. Facca, PhD Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest,” I am struck by the need for each of us to take the first step, to come, to make time, to say Yes! Kathleen Ferry A retreat can be a wonderful way for these words to be fulfilled. – whether it be for a weekend, a Hon. Laura Gallagher few days, 8 days. Even from an economic standpoint, it is one of the best values in the world – as well as a life-changing experience. Gladstone I am honored to build on the legacy and love of Sr. Mary Ann Flannery, SC for the mission and William Koeblitz ministry of JRH. We each found much joy in the transition as well as a commitment to sustain an Keith Laschinger ongoing relationship. Sr. Mary Ann will continue to do the retreats, programs and spiritual direction she loves to do at JRH. Paul V. Murphy During my four-month transition process and my first month as Executive Director, I have Donald Petkash, SJ listened to many people sharing the history and stories of JRH. I am very impressed by what I have seen and heard about the powerful ways in which God's grace and blessings are present in Robert Welsh, SJ the lives of people we serve through the retreats and programs that are core strengths of JRH. Rick Krivanka Executive Director In this newsletter you will see the beginning of a new collaboration with Heart to Heart Communications based in Akron, being developed with Fr. JRH was very pleased to have a visit this summer from Fr. Cap Miller, S.J. Fr. Miller is a 1951 graduate of St. Ignatius High School. He took his senior year retreat at JRH and recalls how on this retreat he was inspired by the witness and presence of the older Jesuit Brothers. As a result of experiencing their peaceful and joyful demeanor, he was inspired to join the Jesuit Order. Since his ordination in 1958 he has served in Nepal first as a teacher and currently in Formation Work.

YouCan teaches faith-based leadership lessons to emerging leaders from Benedictine High School at the Jesuit Retreat House

What are the characteristics of good leaders? What do Jesus and teach us about the importance of leadership? Does God call us to be great? These are a few of the questions that Fr. Matt Roche,SJ (JRH) Brian Dean and Paul Koopman (YouCan) discussed with student leaders from Benedictine High School. “Fr. Matt, Paul and I enjoyed leading a faith and fun-filled day with these fine young leaders.” - Brian Dean.

Modules included discussions about the importance of character and communication with how St. Benedict and St. Ignatius used inner discipline and guidance from God to found the Benedictine and Jesuit orders. Fr. Matt discussed how using a daily prayer form, the Examen, could aid these young leaders. Funding for the Youth Leadership retreats was made possible by the generous support of the Raskob Foundation For Catholic Activities, Inc.

December 31 - January 1 New Years’s Eve Retreat: Hope is the Now Presented by Patrick & Jeannie Cleary-Burns Cost:$90

Hope. In these tumultuous times, it is often obscured. We will use the wisdom of the Holy Spirit and St. Ignatius to find hope by grounding ourselves in the ‘now’. New Year’s Eve presents a terrific opportunity. Calling on the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we will use Ignatius’ Examen and a variety of the sources of revelation – scripture, quiet, our imaginations, the world around us, and each other – to look back to see the many graces we received in this turbulent year and look ahead to living thankfully in 2015. Retreat starts with dinner at 6:00 p.m. and concludes at 11:00 a.m. Advent Opportunities at JRH Advent Weekend Retreat: December 5-7 Topic & Facilitator TBA Cost:$90

Advent Luncheon: December 15 Witness to Innocence. Presented by Rev. Neil Kookoothe & Joe D’Ambrosio 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Cost:$25 The talk will focus on how Fr. Neil and Joe met one another in Neil’s work as a spiritual advisor to the men on Ohio’s Death Row and how he pleaded with him to investigate his case and claims of innocence. Then we talk about the evidence of his innocence that was discovered and the many obstacles to presenting that evidence in court. Obstacles that came to us via the prosecutors office, the police department and the coroner. The case eventually made its way through the Supreme Court and Joe was exonerated after 22 years on Death Row in January of 2012. Midday prayer starts at 11:30 followed by lunch and the speaker. Program concludes by 1:30.
