St. Martin de Porres | CYO Basketball 2018-2019 1 ST. MARTIN de PORRES CYO BASKETBALL PROGRAM 2018 – 2019

The St. Martin de Porres CYO basketball program offers boys and girls within our community, parishioners and non-parishioners, an opportunity to enjoy basketball at the instructional, intramural and travel team levels of competition. It gives them a chance to develop their basketball skills, teamwork and sportsmanship, plus they are offered a chance for new friendships. CYO empowers young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ, to participate in community service and to foster their spiritual growth. CYO also encourages parents to share in their children’s growth and to be a positive influence on our youth.

Chris Fields Athletic Director St. Martin de Porres CYO Basketball Program 2 St. Martin de Porres | CYO Basketball 2018-2019 Athletic Director’s Corner

It’s hard to believe that another basketball season is over, my 13th year as athletic director and 16th overall. I’m so impressed with how the kids’ basketball skills improved from September to March. While running the instructional hot shot contest, I couldn’t believe how talented our youngest players had become in just a few short months. They weren’t afraid to compete for prizes with a gym full of adults! Kids in our B3-4 and G4-6 intramural programs took huge strides in learning the fundamentals of the game. Players in our older leagues and on travel teams continued to build the foundation to make their high school teams or simply play for the love of the game. This would not have been possible without our coaches sharing their knowledge of the game while building a strong foundation based on the fundamentals. Nor would this have been possible without the love shown by our parents to get their kids to practices, games, contests, clinics and events. Without our league directors, no one would know when, where or what to do. For this, I can’t thank enough our directors, coaches and parents for the sacrifices made so that the kids could learn and enjoy the great game of basketball.

Going forward, we will miss two long-time volunteers who have retired: Norb Hart (32 years of service) and Vinny Reilly (14 years). Norb has done almost everything over the last three decades, most recently overseeing our boys’ high school league for the last eight years plus coaching his daughter, Jackie, and his sons, Nick and Dan, while working with other CYO volunteers whom he coached while in his 20’s! Norb will be honored this June with the CYO Volunteer Spirit of Service Award at the 4th Annual Catholic Charities Awards Dinner. Vinny was a long-time coach, B7-9 intramural director and travel director and he very much enjoyed coaching his two sons, Tim and Sean. We continue to pray for Laura’s full recovery, so please keep the Reilly’s in your thoughts and prayers. The Reilly’s will always have love and support from our CYO family.

Last year I said that my off-season focus would be to delegate more, secure more gym time, better balance our intramural teams and continually enhance the spiritual aspects of our CYO program. Except for the first item (I still need more help), check on the last three, since we had more than enough gym time to make-up over 40 practices, our intramural teams were more balanced and we focused on bringing parents and kids into a personal relationship with Jesus. I would like to focus on this last topic in the next couple of pages. Per Monsignor Edmund Whalen, Vicar or Clergy, Archdiocese of New York: “Unlike other sports and youth activity programs, the CYO is about seeing the goodness of God in each person, developing God-given skills and talents and setting the stage for a life of faith in action. A parish with a strong CYO is a strong parish.”

Below is a quick summary of the strengths of our basketball program:  Our program had 450 participants in 2006 and has grown to +/- 600 kids since 2009. We typically have over 50 teams in our instructional, intramural and travel programs.  Our CYO program is financially strong. Our annual tournament concluded its 11th year with 80 teams and 141 games and has raised over $175,000 for our parish, the K of C food pantry, Camp Veritas subsidies and other local charities. Including general fund donations, we have donated over $240,000 since the 2006-2007 season.  We continue to offer the following each season: pre-season clinics to get the kids back into basketball, NBA 3- Point Contest, Hot Shot Contest and support the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest.  We continue to have annual events with the Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks and UConn Huskies. Over 3,400 people have attended our annual Nets events since 2008.  We continue to have CYO Nights at both Marist College and Vassar College. Please see the listing of all events offered this season at St. Martin CYO to gain a full appreciation for the scope of our program.

I hope that you had a very enjoyable season and as we look ahead to next season, we are enthusiastic about the plans to strengthen our G7-10 and B10-12 intramural programs. Enjoy your spring / summer (hopefully playing basketball at a variety of camps or AAU) and look to register online for next season no later than 8/15.

God bless,

Chris St. Martin de Porres | CYO Basketball 2018-2019 3 Enhancing the ‘C’ in CYO

Our CYO program has grown to 600 kids and while we have maintained a very strong basketball program, we recognize the need to evangelize and share Jesus Christ with both the parents and kids on a daily basis so that they come to realize that the true meaning of life is having a personal relationship with Jesus. To assist with this mission, we’ve started or continued the following:

 365 days a year all CYO participants receive a Word of God email, which contains a spiritual quote summarizing the day’s readings plus a written commentary and a video reflection on these readings. At a minimum, this gives participants the chance to spend 5 to 10 minutes each day with our Lord to learn more about his Word. As a result, more CYO parents have come to know Jesus better and some non-Catholics were moved to enroll in our RCIA program to become Catholics. After kids graduate from our CYO program, parents are welcome to remain on the distribution list for these Word of God emails so that their faith continues to grow.

 At the recently completed Discovering Christ program at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in the fall of 2018, our CYO program had 17 participants, continuing a trend of more CYO participants partaking in the ChristLife series which includes Discovering, Following and Sharing Christ, which is strongly supported by the Archdiocese of NY.

 Our CYO program provides a $200 subsidy for CYO participants to attend Camp Veritas each summer. This year we donated $2,400 for 12 kids to attend this awesome camp. Camp Veritas is a one-week sleep away pilgrimage experience for teens going into 7th through 12th grade. It’s a play-and-pray camp that provides a journey to Christ and a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith through an intense fellowship immersion with other youth. Daytime activities include the Catholic basketball camp and other sports, while evening activities include focused spiritual instruction and discussion, energetic music for praise and worship, daily Mass, testimonies and Adoration.

 For the last 8 years, we have hosted an annual coach’s dinner and retreat, typically in November, to encourage our coaches to strengthen their personal relationship with Jesus. Past retreats have had various guest speakers, a ChristLife DVD teaching, a TMIY (That Man Is You!) DVD teaching, testimonies and small group discussion. The focus is on sharing the Good News of the Gospel, which is included in the yearbook in a couple of pages.

 We give the boys in our CYO high school league either Bible Promise books or the Discover Christ books each season to encourage them to learn more about the true meaning of life as they head off to college.

 Christian concerts are a great way to better learn and understand the Word of God through music. CYO participants have been invited to attend concerts with the ChristLife organization and last season we attended concerts by Casting Crowns, MercyMe, Matthew West, We Are Messengers and Sidewalk Prophets.

 We have an annual CYO Super Bowl Sunday mass in which many participants attend with their teams and the homily focuses on the spirit of CYO, often creating standing room only at the 9:30 AM mass!

 We encourage our coaches to read “LEAD…for God’s Sake!”, which was recommended by Brian Giorgis, the Marist women’s head coach. It’s a parable for finding the meaning behind leadership and what motivates others. We want the coaches to realize that their leadership or influence is a vital component of fulfilling their purpose here on earth. This includes praying and sharing Christ with their teams at practices and games.

 We’ve strengthened the definition of active parishioner for our CYO travel teams, which means that we must have received an envelope (empty or full) or a We Share deposit over the last year. This is the only way to track mass attendance, since we want truly active parishioners on our travel teams and we want to encourage our families to attend mass regularly.

 For the first time last season, 67 CYO participants attended a Christmas Spectacular show at Radio City Music Hall for which CYO paid for the bus. This was a fun way to start the Christmas season!

 We encourage our CYO participants to sign-up for the Best Advent Ever and Best Lent Ever programs offered by Dynamic Catholic as well as read the many books and publications from Matthew Kelly through our parish at Christmas and Easter.

Enhancing the ‘C’ in CYO

 We encourage the men in our CYO program to consider attending That Man Is You! (TMIY), which is offered at Holy Trinity parish on Saturday mornings, and addresses the pressures and temptations that men face in our modern culture, especially those relating to their roles as husbands and fathers. The program harmonizes current social and medical science with the teachings of the Church and the wisdom of the to develop the vision of man fully alive! Please consider joining us at 7:20 AM in Mestice Hall each Saturday morning.

 As part of our annual tournament since Year 3, we’ve had CYO team collections along with 50 / 50 raffles to raise money for the Knights of Columbus food pantry. They take our donations and distribute food / gift cards to Dutchess Lunch Box, Catholic Charities of Dutchess County, Holy Trinity Food Pantry, Knights of Columbus food pantry's in the Hudson Valley and to parishioners of our parish. We have donated over $40,000 to the food pantry and we’ve answered Cardinal Dolan’s call: “We need to feed the hungry in the name of Jesus, and that is a high honor and call. We need to make sure that none of our neighbors are ever turned away when they look to the church for help.”

 We continue to require all Catholics in 1st through 8th grade in our CYO program to attend religious education and if they don’t attend at St. Martin, then we require proof of attendance at another parish.

 We continue to advertise our parish’s Reach Christ youth group to 7th graders and above although we have more work to do to better convey the benefits of belonging to this awesome teen group.

We are encouraged by the response to these initiatives and pray that more parents and kids will take advantage of these opportunities to grow in Christ. While we are proud of the success of our basketball program, we are even more motivated to share Christ with our participants, since this will have a far lasting impact on their lives than basketball. As part of my testimony, I like to share that when I joined CYO, I did so purely for the love of basketball. Little did I know that CYO became the way for God to touch me and bring me closer to Him.

More importantly, keep drawing closer to Jesus every day by praying, reading scripture, receiving the sacraments of Holy Communion and Confession, forgiving one another and living the spirit-empowered life that Christ and his Church wants for us. Your journey with Christ will lead to more joy and happiness than you can imagine!

Finally, Monsignor Sullivan is retiring as pastor of St. Martin this June. I would like to thank him for his support over the years, especially with regards to my spiritual development. Community is extremely important for growth in faith and I’ve been blessed to have the parish of St. Martin de Porres provide opportunities to do so over the last decade.

God bless,

Chris

St. Martin de Porres | CYO Basketball 2018-2019 5 The Good News of the Gospel

I shared this at our coach’s retreat for the first time four years ago, which the coaches appreciated and more importantly, got them thinking. It is now a fixture at our annual coach’s retreat and dinner. As I like to say, you don’t know what you don’t know until you take the time to learn more about your Catholic faith. Years ago I was focused on material aspects of this world, not unlike many others. But having a personal relationship with Jesus has transformed my life from a self- centered life to a Christ-centered life, which has brought immense joy and happiness. This would not have been possible had I not taken the time to learn more about my faith, pray daily, study scripture, receive the sacraments of Holy Communion and Confession regularly, forgive others and live the spirit-empowered life that Christ and his Church wants for us. I hope that sharing the four spiritual truths of the Gospel will encourage you to do the same. I would like nothing more than for our CYO organization to enhance their journey on earth with Christ.

Purpose

God created us to live in a relationship “I have loved you with an of love and trust with Him. He cares everlasting love.” about everything that is going on in 31:3 our lives and His thoughts toward us “How precious are your thoughts are good! Our purpose in life is to about me O’ God, they cannot be respond to God’s love and enter into numbered.” a relationship with Him. Psalm 139:17

Problem

God loves us so much that He created us “For all have sinned and fall short with free will. We chose to sin, which of the glory of God.” caused a separation between us and God. Romans 3:23 We can’t fix the problem through our own efforts. This separation prevents us from “For the wages of sin is having a personal relationship with Him, death.” not only here on earth, but for eternity. Romans 6:23

Provision (Here’s the Good News!!)

God loves us so much that He gave us the “For God so loved the world that he gift of His Son Jesus to bridge the gap gave his one and only Son, that our sin created. Jesus paid the price for whoever believes in Him shall not our sins on the Cross. He took the punish- perish but have eternal life” ment for us. His sacrifice makes it possible John 3:16 for us to be reconciled to God and forgiven “..but the free gift of God is eternal of our sins. His resurrection destroys the in Christ Jesus our Lord” power of death and gives us eternal life. Romans 6:23

Personal Response

Knowing Jesus’ sacrifice is not enough. “I am the way, and the truth, and We need to make a decision to accept or the life; no one comes to the reject the free gift God has given us. We Father, but by me.” need to repent, thank Jesus for taking the John 14:6 punishment for us and invite Him to be our our Lord and Savior. This is the only way to bridge the gap that separates us from God and bring us into relationship with Him both now and into eternity.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Romans 10:9-10 6 St. Martin de Porres | CYO Basketball 2018-2019 2018 – 2019 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS www.stmartindeporres-cyo.org Facebook - St. Martin de Porres CYO Basketball

Online registrations occurred for the first time on our new League Athletics web site  579 registrations were easily taken and 51 teams were formed.  Plans are to use more functionality in future years, such as game schedules, scores, standings, etc.

We changed the format of the intramural league drafts to ensure better balance  After a first pass of the teams at the draft, we had a freeze period of a week to review the initial teams, analyze the teams and make adjustments to ensure better balance.  Extra evaluation sessions were held to the draft to better evaluate the kids.  While not perfect, the new process was well received based on feedback from parents.

67 people attended the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall on November 24  This was the first time that we purchased group tickets to this wonderful show.  CYO covered the cost of the bus out of tournament proceeds to make the day affordable and enjoyable for all, allowing time before and after the show to enjoy lunch and NYC.

We attended two NBA games and one college game this season  40 people attended our annual event against the Philadelphia 76’ers on November 4 where the kids used the Barclays Center court for two hours for shooting and rebounding lines followed by 5-on-5 games in each half court and 3 short full court games. Although the fewest participants that we’ve ever had, it was truly a wonderful day for both parents and kids! 3,413 people have participated in our Nets events since 2008.  42 people attended the New York Knicks vs. Milwaukee Bucks on December 1 in one of the MSG lounges, which included food. The Knicks won in overtime in an exciting game and we all enjoyed watching the Greek Freak (Giannis Antetokounmpo) score 33 points and pull down 19 rebounds!  14 people attended the UConn versus Villanova game on December 22 in which the defending national champions pulled away in the second half after the teams were tied at halftime.

The 11th Annual St. Martin CYO Basketball Tournament was played in December and January  A record 80 travel teams from Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, Putnam, Westchester and Rockland counties participated in 7 divisions comprised of three four-team pools and 141 games.  Round-robin games were played on 12/8-9 and 12/15-16 at St. Martin, The Culinary Institute of America, Oakwood Friends and Vassar College.  The top teams after round-robin play advanced to the Final Four and Championship games at The McCann Arena at Marist College on January 4-6 while the B7 and B8 teams did the same at at the Athletic & Fitness Center at Vassar College on January 6.  Thanks to many sponsors and volunteers, this was a high quality tournament at beautiful venues in which over 900 participants received free tournament t-shirts and free programs.  No St. Martin travel team placed first or second for the first time, although our B5 and G78 teams made the Final Four for their divisions.  This year’s tournament raised $20,257. We donated $10,000 to the parish of St. Martin de Porres, $5,407 to our Knight of Columbus food pantry, $3,000 to subsidize CYO kids attending Camp Veritas and retained $1,850 for CYO to subsidize event buses and Knicks lounge tickets.

We had our 11th Annual 3-Point Contest on November 10  63 kids participated in this extremely fun and entertaining event, which was NBA style with 5 racks of 5 balls, with the last ball the money ball and multiple rounds of competition.

We had our 10th Annual Hot Shots contest on February 10  This contest tests your ability to make as many baskets as you can in 60 seconds from five spots on the court with five different point values while rebounding your shots and dribbling to the next selected spot.  During December and January, each 3rd - 10th intramural and travel team had a hot shot contest to determine their two representatives for the larger parish competition.  72 players competed on February 10 in an excellent and enjoyable competition, with B3-4 and G4-6 divisions competing on 9-foot hoops.  The instructional league conducted a similar contest at 8’ hoops on March 3.

Our clinics and events were enjoyable once again this season  The Marist men’s team hosted their annual clinic at St. Martin and we attended a Marist men’s and women’s practice at the McCann arena.  Kenney Dawson, president of Playmaker Academy and former St. Martin CYO coach, conducted a clinic on the fundamentals of basketball at his training facility in Hopewell Junction.  Al Viani, Our Lady of Lourdes girls’ head coach, conducted his annual clinic for the girls at OLL along with several St. Martin CYO graduates.  The Vassar men’s and women’s team conducted an excellent clinic as part of their Brewer Madness Basketball Event to kick-off their seasons.  We had a couple of open gyms and pizza parties, but two were cancelled to use St. Martin gym for make- up travel games and practices.

We had our 11th Annual CYO mass on Super Bowl Sunday again this year  Over 100 players and their parents attended this annual mass at which Father Bancroft discussed the CYO spirit and the importance of CYO at our parish.  We continue to encourage all of our teams to say pre-game and post-practice prayers, encourage players and the parents to establish a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, encourage players entering 7th-12th grade to attend Camp Veritas on a CYO subsidy and encourage parents to participate in the ChristLife series Discovering, Following and Sharing Christ.

St. Martin de Porres | CYO Basketball 2018-2019 19 8th Annual Coach’s Retreat & Dinner November 13, 2018

Our annual coach’s retreat and dinner gave us time to reflect on our faith and enhance our personal relationship with Jesus Christ. After a nice dinner catered by Cosimo’s Trattoria, we watched a teaching from That Man Is You (TMIY) entitled “From Gangland to Promised Land”. When asked what his longest and hardest prison sentence was, former London Mafia enforcer, John Pridmore, had the clarity and experience to reply “Twenty-seven years without God.” Drugs, alcohol, abuse, promiscuity, violence and prison - there was nothing John Pridmore hadn’t experienced. He said that his soul was already dead and even rotting with stench before the Lord resurrected his heart. His epic story of conversion was riveting and illustrated the mighty and transforming power of God.

After this amazing video, Chris Fields then shared the Good News of the Gospel, which highlighted the need to make a personal decision with our mind and our hearts to accept the free gift God has given us through His Son Jesus to bridge the gap that our sin has created.

St. Martin CYO encourages our adult participants to enroll in the ChristLife series Discovering, Following and Sharing Christ, while we encourage our kids entering 7th to 12th grade to take the $200 CYO subsidy to go to Camp Veritas.

We had plenty of time before the show to have lunch and sightsee as well as some time after the show to enjoy NYC. I hope that we’ll have a high interest level next season and perhaps this will become an annual event!

INSTRUCTIONAL LEAGUES

The Instructional League is where it all begins in the St. Martin de Porres CYO Basketball Program. It’s where kids are introduced to proper techniques and the fundamentals of the game – passing, shooting, dribbling, rebounding, defense and sportsmanship. It’s amazing to see the growth that takes place over the course of the season as these young players absorb the coaches’ instructions and their on-court experiences. Some players who could barely hold a ball and were unable to reach the rim with a shot at the start of the season were dribbling around and knocking down jump shots in games by season’s end. Many players who were afraid to catch a rebound in November were confidently snatching them out of the sky by March.

This player growth is truly thanks to the great work of the Instructional League coaches. Every single one of these coaches this year were fantastic teachers and role models for their teams and they deserve a lot of credit. Knowledgeable, patient, upbeat, reliable – these are the adjectives that come to mind to describe the Instructional League coaches. A wonderful all around!

I also thank the parents for understanding the objectives of this league, which are for the kids to have fun and learn the game of basketball in a pressure-free environment. Scores and records are not kept to keep the focus on fun and learning. Rules are modified to accommodate the growth of all the young players, many of whom have never played basketball before. Some players are obviously more advanced and it’s greatly appreciated how those kids and their parents understand the modifications necessary to keep the games orderly, fun and productive. I also saw many times when a more skilled player would voluntarily pass up a scoring opportunity to give a teammate a chance to take a shot and score a basket. It’s that type of small act of kindness and goodness that exemplify what this program should be about and what the St. Martin de Porres parish stands for.

We had 164 boys and girls participate in the Instructional League program this year, maxed out at 96 players in the K-1 division while we had 68 players in the 2nd-3rd grade division. Each of our 14 teams met 14 times from November through March. As always in this league, each player receives their own youth- size basketball at the first session, which they get to use throughout the season and keep to play and practice at home. The height-adjustable backboards are a unique feature at St. Martin that allow players to learn the proper form and skills while many get to experience the thrill of scoring their first-ever baskets in front of their families during the games.

To end the season, we had our 9th annual Instructional Hot Shot competition finals. It was an exciting evening and the gym was packed with family members cheering on each team’s two finalists. The top two finishers in each division – Patrick Licari and Ben Whitted in K-1; Dylan Piniero and Alex Sims in 2-3 – received prizes and trophies. Everyone who participated should be proud of his or her achievement.

I don’t know what this program would look like without the dedication of our Athletic Director, Chris Fields, but I know it wouldn’t be as rich and rewarding an experience without his leadership. His efforts make a big difference in the lives of the CYO players and families, creating great memories and lasting friendships. CYO basketball draws a lot of folks to St. Martin de Porres and the excellence with which it is run by Chris Fields and everyone involved contributes to the parish’s already stellar reputation.

See you next season!

46 St. Martin de Porres | CYO Basketball 2018-2019 GIRLS 4TH – 6TH GRADE INTRAMURAL DIVISION

I hope that everyone enjoyed her basketball season. We had more close, competitive games than I can remember (but then again, I can’t remember what I had for breakfast, so you can’t go by me). Actually, there really were many great games during the season as well as during the playoffs. The players gave great effort and were obviously very well coached. They ran some real nice plays, including screen and roll, give and go and in- bounds play. It was a pleasure watching them do what the coaches taught them at practices and during the games. Also you could see the players improve and develop individually and as a team as the season went along. But just as important as playing well and improving was the enjoyment that they experienced throughout the season. There were lots and lots of smiles, camaraderie, teamwork, sportsmanship, helping up opponents when they fell down (sometimes with a little help from their opponent, but never intentional), laughing with friends and making new friends. These are wonderful things that one gets to experience when being part of a team. And these things apply to life as well. As we go through life, we become a member of non-sports related teams at school, work, etc., and so the experiences and lessons that we learn from team sports helps to prepare and teach us how to get along with others and be a good teammate in life. The coaches did an awesome job not just teaching the players how to play, but also making it fun. I think the best evidence of how much fun the players had was when I arrived on Saturday morning to open up the gym and there would be a crowd waiting to get in. And I was there so early! OK, maybe not, sorry about that. I was just trying to toughen everybody up for the long, harsh winter. In closing, a great, great job and big thank you to the coaches: Jim Gill, Antonio Mazzarelli, Bill Peek, Noreen Weatherwax and Chris Weisner, as well as to their assistant coaches and everyone else that helped out with the teams. Also, a great thank you to Chris Fields, our St Martin CYO Athletic Director. As I’m sure you know, this CYO basketball program is far different and more extensive than any other. Just look through the yearbook at all the activities! And what other CYO program even provides a yearbook? It’s absolutely incredible and it’s all because of Chris’ leadership and countless hours spent making it all happen. Thank you, Chris!!! Take care everyone, enjoy the warm weather and all the wonderful things that life has to offer, I hope to see you next season (just don’t hold your breath waiting for me to get there Saturday mornings).

Playoff Champions! When I drafted this team, I knew we could go a long way. However, I didn’t base my picks solely on talent, I drafted on personality, too. Our girl have charisma, confidence and now a CYO championship. I feel we succeeded as a team this year because we had fun, we learned and we made memories. We had fun at practices and during games. Each of the girls got a little better in terms of basketball fundamentals from the start of the year. Most important to me was helping the girls make memories, and that we certainly did by being the best! Looking back, I can honestly say that I feel we accomplished our goals, so thank you! Thanks to everyone for allowing me this opportunity. I consider myself blessed. I hope to have many of the same girls next year. But to all my sixth graders, I will miss you. Now go out next year, work hard, have fun and kick some butt! I wish you and your families a lifetime of health and happiness. – Coach Peek

Regular Season Champions! I haven’t enjoyed coaching any Teal team more than I did this one. We could be wearing those familiar “Family” t-shirts that special teams sport. Lost all 6 players from last season’s ‘A’ team. Our new squad stepped up and performed admirably. Maybe we could have scored the ball a bit better, yet our defense was consistent and formidable. Received many comments and compliments about our team play and individual skill improvements. It’s difficult not emphasize winning on game days, but I don’t want to underestimate the amount of FUN that we always had on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Thanks to Adam and Ella for working the clock and keeping a great scorebook. Thanks to all who supplied our awesome snacks at practices! Keep attending clinics and playing in summer leagues. See you again in the fall. Go St. Martin’s and Go Teal! – Coach Weisner

Early in the year, I taught the girls “pistols” defense. They liked, or laughed at, that term so much that they decided to call the team the Pink Pistols.  That is the type of girls that we had this year. A fun-loving group that was really a pleasure to coach. They were also remarkably bright and willing to learn. This was the first year that I ever tried to teach kids this young, boys or girls, a motion offense. One week after introducing it in practice, the girls were running it in the game. I was amazed at how bright they are and their sports IQ. Matt, our division director and head referee, mentioned to me multiple times how impressed he was at the team’s style of play. That is a complement to every single girl on this team. I wish the Pink Pistols well in their future endeavors on and off the court. I pray that they give it their all, just as they did in basketball, in everything they do. – Coach Mazz

She is not afraid to shoot and score, even 5 Lia Carroll 13 38 when playing with the older girls. She played great in the All-Star game, too! Riley Carroll Riley is one of our “bigs”. Sydney is one of our guards and a girl with a great handle. She played point 6 Sydney Clauson 15 6 most of the time and was great at distributing the ball. LillyAnne Lindell Lilly is the team’s only 4th grader, but you didn’t know it when she was on the 4 10 2 Sportsmanship Award court. We didn’t keep the stats, but I bet she was one of our top rebounders. Bianca Mazzarelli Bianca is a beast on the basketball court. Going hard every minute that she is 6 13 26 All-Star out there. She is a defensive juggernaut and a well-deserved team All-Star. Sofia is another relentless Pink Pistol. Needless to say, this was a tough season for the players. We started out with just enough players to make a go of it, but then we lost a few to injury, another one moved away, there were travel team games which conflicted with intramural games and so some players began to not show up (understandably so) and it just wasn’t the way anybody wanted it. But thankfully, there were a bunch of players (a.k.a. gym rats) that wanted to play as much as they could, however they could and so they continued to come and play every week, no matter what! The coaches also kept coming, no matter how few players from their teams showed up, and they did what they could to make it fun and educational for whoever did show up. The coaches and players stuck together and rallied around one another to make the best of a tough situation. They all love basketball, cared about one another and made it work as best as they could. Good job by all of you!!!

The coaches (Paige Decker, Stacey Loughran, Jay Scully and Chris Weisner) were all very, very dedicated and were there for the players that did come to practices and games. Good job coaches, thank you very much!!! Once upon a time, there were not separate 4-6 grade and 7-10 grade leagues; it was all just one big league, which played at St Martin’s. The 4th-6th graders played against one another in the 1st and 3rd periods and the 7th-9th graders played against one another in the 2nd and 4th periods. It was kinda neat, because the younger ones looked up to and were mentored by the older ones. But since that time there have been several positive steps forward, including splitting into 2 separate leagues, expanding to include 9th graders, and then later on to 10th graders, and of course, playing on the bigger court at Gold’s Gym."

Next season will be the next step forward in the evolution of the girls program, which will alleviate the player shortage issue that we had this season. As you probably know by now, there will be at least two St. Martin’s teams (which will exclude travel team players), as well as a Holy Trinity team and a St Mary’s - Wappingers team, and they’ll all play one another at Gold’s Gym. This is exactly what we had this season for the high school boys (a St Martin’s team, a St Mary’s team and two Holy Trinity teams) and it worked out very, very well. So onward and upward.

To Mackenzie Michaelis and Patricia Scully, our two graduating seniors (10th graders), thank you for being part of St Martin’s CYO basketball for SO many years (18? 19? 22?). Both of you had a great, long run and you obviously had a lot of fun, otherwise you wouldn’t have stuck around all these years. On behalf of all of the coaches, myself and Chris Fields, thank you for being near and dear to our hearts for so long. It was great having you. You were a role model and great teammate to others for so many years. Thank you and best of luck, health and happiness in the future!!! Chris Fields, once again, thank you for ALL that you do, which is extensive to put it mildly!!! Take care everyone, stay safe and be well. Best wishes always.

The Blue team started the season out strong. As the season unfolded and the league made some changes, we ended up combining some teams, but our girls kept positive attitudes. Saturdays were always fun and that is what is most important. The girls kept their spirits, competitiveness and heart to finish out the season strong. I hope they had as much fun as I did getting to know each other and developing their game. The Boys 3rd-4th Grade Intramural Division is the next stepping-stone in the program in which the rules and structure of games are formally introduced. The games have referees and scores are kept to add a layer of competition. However, the focus remains on skill building and development of basketball fundamentals. Most of the boys have not been exposed to this yet, so it becomes a great learning experience for them. Competition can be fierce at times, but at the end of the day, sportsmanship is key to the program and the coaches and parents should be commended for making that the top priority.

Another focal point of this league is to instill the aspect of teamwork in each player while fostering a love for the game of basketball. Having fun and learning good sportsmanship are keys to this level as well as the commitment to emphasizing the “C” in CYO. Players were first introduced to the CYO pledge this year and emphasis is placed on making sure that each player carries out the mission statement inspired by that pledge.

The season consisted of an eleven game regular season followed by several weeks of playoffs and consolation games. More than half these games were decided by less than 10 points with the final three playoff games each decided by four points or less. This shows the level of dedication and commitment over the course of a long season from both coaches, players, and parents, who often have the toughest job of all in balancing their own busy lives with the demands of shuttling players to weekly practices and games. My hope is that every single player understands and appreciates the level of sacrifice and support that their coaches and parents provide for them and a special thanks goes out to all of them.

Speaking of coaches, any youth sports organization is only as good as the volunteers that help keep it afloat and as a first year director, I cannot possibly thank enough the group of coaches and assistant coaches who helped run this level. Not only are each and every one of them outstanding coaches, but more importantly, they are tremendous people who serve the important purpose of being a positive role model in a young athlete's life. My gratitude to all of your efforts is immense and the program is better off for having you.

Thank you to all of the players, coaches, and parents once again for making this a very successful CYO season! I hope to see you all again next season!

I felt everyone improved tremendously as the season progressed. I think that I speak for all coaches and parents when I express my gratitude for all the time put into this year. There were many lessons and steady patience as we tried reaching the most important goal of all, which was bringing the love of the game to these impressionable young boys. 68 St. Martin de Porres | CYO Basketball 2018-2019 BOYS 5TH – 6TH GRADE INTRAMURAL DIVISION

The Boys 5th- 6th Grade Intramural Division had a bit of a face lift this season given the draft and how teams were picked to ensure that the teams were as balanced as possible. This was not an easy task, but in the end, I feel that it was the most balanced the teams have been in a long time. This was evident by how close most of the scores were throughout the regular season and playoffs, including an exciting semifinal game that went into overtime. I would like to thank Chris Fields for his guidance in the forming of the balanced teams. I would like to thank the coaches who volunteered their time with the kids and who truly enjoy the game and the comradery shared with the team and even the opposing coaches. I feel that they should truly be recognized for having to referee games either before or after their game. This is extra time away from family and other tasks people try to fit in on a busy weekend. The St. Martins CYO Basketball Program is the largest in the county and the main reason for the success of the program is Chris Fields and his leadership skills. He has built this outstanding program while keeping the focus on the “C” in CYO. Thank you, Chris, for the outstanding job and commitment you have!

The 5th-6th Grade Intramural program is where you get to see a transformation of the kids moving up from 3rd – 4th grade intramurals, who are now a couple inches taller and more athletic than a year ago. This equates to more competitive basketball with a strong foundation of basketball skills that the kids learned in the instructional and lower level intramural programs.

Our coaches did a great job working with the boys from the end of October until mid-March. This program would not be possible without their dedication and commitment to the kids. The teams practiced once a week and had games Saturday afternoons at St. Martin de Porres gym and Gold’s Gym. The coaches worked together to ensure this was a successful season and they should be applauded for the time that they gave up to work with the kids. Coaches have a deep impact on the kids and is something that should not be taken for granted. I grew up playing basketball in this program and I remember every coach that I had and I took something from each one of them, which impacted not only my career as a basketball player but in life outside of sports. Life lessons thru sports stressing teamwork, work ethic and handling adversity provides a solid foundation for the kids moving forward.

The boys played a regular season of 12 games then the playoffs. The most memorable game was the Pink versus Blue semifinal game. Blue had a double-digit lead for most of the game and Pink chipped away at the lead and eventually won in overtime. As the great coach, Jim Valvano, said in his famous ESPY award speech, “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up”. Both teams played an outstanding game. We are always looking for coaches and volunteers, so please let us know if you would like to be part of the program.

Thank you to all the players, coaches and parents for this season. The entire B7-9 intramural season confirmed that our new approach to forming intramural teams was a positive step in continually improving and strengthening our CYO program. By analyzing the teams for a week after the draft and making some adjustments, better team balance was achieved. More than half the league was 9th graders this season. This CYO program takes great pride in knowing that more than half the players in this league have played on CYO travel, AAU, modified, freshman, JV or varsity teams, which shows that the St. Martin de Porres CYO program is serving the community in a special way. This wide array of external teams often resulted in a skewed amount of players present at regular season games.

The season ended with the top team in the regular season having three losses. The playoffs included all 8 teams and the final four consisted of the top 4 seeded teams. Orange (1) played Dark Blue (4) and Red (2) played Pink (3). All three final four playoff games were very competitive with the top 2 teams meeting in the championship game. Orange edged the Red team to take the championship 49-39. Orange’s Daniel Belmonte led all scorers with 14 points.

The season concluded with the all-star game, which was an incredible offensive display. Each team in the league selected three players to be all-stars. The game ended 83-82, which is the most points that we have seen on a CYO scoreboard! The players chose teams from the selected players that were present.

A special thanks and good luck to our retired B7-9 director, Vinny Reilly, for everything he did for the program. Thank you to Chris Fields for his incredible passion for developing this program and his extensive effort to make the CYO program and our community enhanced with Catholic enrichment. Also, a special thank you to Matt Grossman, for scheduling the referees each week. Thank you and God bless you all from the St. Martin de Porres Catholic Youth Organization (CYO).

I had a great time coaching these boys this season. Coaching at the 7-9 level is very interesting because there is wide variety of talent and knowledge on the teams. At practice we tried to keep it light and fun, teaching the fundamentals of the game and trying to keep the older players interested. Having two sets of twins and a pair of cousins on the same team really helped with our chemistry. The team as a whole had a great fast break game and always played tough on both sides of the ball. I couldn’t have asked for a better team of boys. They showed great character and kept their heads focused on basketball when things got tough during the season. Although the season came to an end sooner then we would have liked, I could not be prouder of this team. - Coach Jared

Our players really supported one another and came together as a team this year. There was a lot of comradery and friendship among the guys. On the court, we were a little up and down. Whether it was injuries to some of our best players at the end of the year or the fact that most of our boys had important school basketball or soccer commitments, it just seemed that we rarely had a practice or game where all ten of our players were out there. I was very proud of how the boys showed great sportsmanship and respect toward the referees and our opponents. Thank you to my co-coach, Brendan, for his added intensity and basketball IQ on the bench. Most importantly, I would like to thank our parents for their positive support throughout the season and for raising a fine group of young men. – Coach Mark Cassidy

Our team was right in the middle of the pack this year. I had a fun time coaching the boys and I hope that they learned something this year. My main message for the boys as they go forward is one that I stressed during the year. Each and every week we need to go out and give it our all. Week in and week out go hard and play great defense. Go out and do the little things in basketball, and in life, to succeed. I hope that they all strive to be all they can be no matter what they choose to do. – Coach Mazz

BOYS HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE

This was the eighth season for 10th through 12th grade boys to continue playing organized basketball in our CYO program. We continued holding one continuous session from mid-September through the end of February instead of the former two-session format. The focus of this league is for high school boys to continue enjoying the game of basketball in an organized environment with certified referees, especially if they don’t make their school teams. Next year, I expect that this league will continue to be played on Saturday mornings.

We continued the practice of picking new teams each week instead of having formal teams. However, since the same 15 to 20 boys came each week, the teams developed a somewhat consistent look and feel. We continued the use of St. Martin’s reversible jerseys to give the “unique teams” feeling. Unlike our other intramural programs, there were no practices during the week, just pick-up games on Saturday morning. For 2019-20, we plan to increase the number of boys in this league and include teams from St. Mary’s Wappingers CYO and Holy Trinity CYO. We plan to have a minimum of 4 teams and set-up a schedule. As always, all games would be officiated by certified referees.

During the winter months, December through February, we were again able to form a high school team to join the Holy Trinity high school league, which included three teams from Holy Trinity, a St Martin’s team and a team from St Mary’s Wappingers. This extra basketball opportunity allowed the boys to play in a more competitive atmosphere. The boys enjoyed playing in the Holy Trinity high school league. Next year, we will look at expanding the partnership with these two CYO programs to include their players in our in-house league as well as our continued participation in the traditional Holy Trinity league.

We look for opportunities for the boys to participate in community service projects and we will continue to look for opportunities again next season. This year, instead of Bible Promise Books, all participants were provided the book Discovering Christ. We encouraged the boys to establish a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, to attend church once they go off to college and to explore scripture.

Overall, it was a good season and we are very happy that our program provides this opportunity for high school age boys to play organized basketball. For those boys graduating from high school and starting the next chapter in their lives, we wish you the best of luck and success in the future. For those boys who plan to return next season, please be prepared for a mid-September start once again. For those boys who have played in St Martin league’s in the past and are entering 10th grade in the fall, please consider joining this high school league.

This is my last year as the high school league director. I have enjoyed my time as this league’s director and providing the high school boys with the extra opportunity to play basketball. I would like to thank all the players, past and present, for their dedication and enthusiasm to basketball. My thanks as well to Chris Fields for his leadership of the St Martin’s basketball program.

Thanks and best wishes!

Congratulations to all seven of our travel teams for successful seasons and challenging themselves at the highest level of CYO basketball! St. Martin has a proud history of tournament, county, upstate and archdiocesan championships. While not numerous this season, our travel teams added some county and tournament championships, but many second place finishes were the story of the season. The dedication of our travel coaches is a huge reason for our success and player development.

Our 4th grade boys won the Dutchess County championship against St. Mary’s Fishkill, the St. Mary’s Tournament last Thanksgiving and finished second in the Harvest Tournament in Brookfield, CT. Their loss to St. Mary’s Kingston in the first round of the Archdiocesan playoffs showed their grit after a slow start, but the future only looks bright for this team!

Our 5th grade boys came in second in the Harvest Tournament, advanced to the Final Four of the St. Martin Tournament and made the Dutchess County playoffs. Advancing in the latter two tournaments highlighted the skill level of this team and this experience will serve them well next season.

Our 6th grade boys had a challenging season, since they weren’t one of the taller teams in the B6 division. But they never gave up in any game and they look forward to battling again as 7th graders next season.

Our 7th grade boys had a tremendous season, which fell one point short in a heart-wrenching loss to St. Mary’s Fishkill in the Dutchess County championship game. This team finished in second place in the Harvest, St. Mary’s Fishkill and Holy Trinity tournament, only missing out in our tournament for a sweep of second in all tournaments. Given the confidence and success achieved this season, this team will contend next season in their last season together.

Our 8th grade boys came in second in the St. Mary’s Fishkill and Holy Trinity tournaments and lost in the first round of the Dutchess County playoffs against a St. Christopher’s Red Hook team that couldn’t miss an outside shot. While their time together has ended, they will always have memories of their Dutchess County championship as 7th graders. Keep an eye on many of these players, since you’ll be reading about them in high school!

Our 5th-6th grade girls were hard pressed to follow-up an appearance in the Archdiocesan championship game and victories in every tournament in which they competed last season. They still had a very successful season, winning the Holy Trinity Tournament, placing second in the Harvest Tournament and losing an overtime thriller in the Dutchess County championship game.

Our 7th-8th grade girls had a difficult season given many injuries, but still found a way to advance to the Final Four of our tournament, losing to the eventually champions, Regina Coeli. They still played with heart throughout the season and we wish these girls great success on their high school teams.

Please review the tournament section of our yearbook for results from the 11th Annual St. Martin CYO Basketball Tournament. This event is a huge undertaking and I’d like to thank the college athletic directors for their support, Matt Grossman for scheduling the referees and the volunteers for site coordinating, tending clocks, staffing admissions and serving concessions. This tournament has a stellar field and while we don’t draw teams from , the results below from the Archdiocesan championship games show four teams who participated in our tournament: St. Columbanus G6 (which competed in the G78 division), St. Gregory’s G6 & G8 and St. Mary’s B6.

Keep playing AAU this spring / summer and I look forward to travel tryouts in September!

DUTCHESS COUNTY CHAMPIONS!!

We have been coaching for over 10 years now, mainly girls, and we didn’t give it a second thought to have the opportunity to start coaching boys, thinking it shouldn’t be any different from coaching girls. Boy were we wrong. They are different! After a few weeks into the season and some “crazy and chaotic” practices, we knew that we had to change our coaching style with this bunch of 3rd and 4th graders. Even with a “change in game plan” on how to coach these boys and get them to a caliber we knew this team could get to, we still had those “crazy and chaotic” practices. However, when it came to game time and county play, each and every one of the boys were focused and wanted nothing more than give 100% out on the court to pull out a win. We couldn’t have asked for more from these boys! The fundamental improvement and the sportsmanship they showed as the season progressed was such a joy to watch and we look forward to working with these boys for the next four years. – Coach Darren & Coach Darlene

He also hit some key outside shots in close games. Fearless! Nick has a great outside shot but also wasn’t afraid to take it to the hole against 3 Nicholas Decker 18 32 the big guys when he saw an opening. Great job running the point as a 3rd grader. Albie was our second 3rd grader playing up on the team. He also shared the point guard 3 Albie Hasbrouck 18 15 position. Great court sense and strong defensive skills. Eger to learn, very coachable! Spencer has great passion for the sport as well as great knowledge of the game. If we 4 Spencer Milano 18 106 needed a big basket, he wasn’t afraid to take it. Great basketball future ahead of him. Showed tremendous improvement with his post moves down low and came up with some 4 Ryan Najork 17 76 huge rebounds. He also made some key free throws during close games. Owen’s defense through the season improved dramatically and came up with some key 4 Owen Paterson 17 12 steals in tight games. So eager to learn and very coachable. The 5th grade travel team had a successful season this year. We had several new additions to the team and they all made significant contributions. The boys worked hard all year and improved each week. The coaches stressed the fundamentals of the game and focused on the team effort, where boxing out, making the extra pass and forcing a turnover were a high priority in our weekly practice. It took some time for the boys to buy into these concepts, but I feel that they took ownership of this by the end of the year and this is something on which we can build. I told them every week that if we play hard and give 100% effort, then I’m ok with the outcome of the game win or lose. I would like to thank the parents for all the support that they provided for the entire year. I look forward to coaching the kids next year. – Coach Tom
