Facts about Saint Martin de Porres Patron Saint of Social Justice, Mixed Race, Barbers, Public Health Workers Feast Day: November 3 Death: 1639 Beatified: 1837 by Pope Gregory XVI Canonized: 1962 by Pope John XXIII The Life of Saint Martin de Porres St. Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru, on December 9, 1579 to Don Juan de Porres, a Spanish nobleman and adventurer, and Ana Velasquez, a freed daughter of slaves from Panama. His father abandoned the family when Martin and his sister, Juana, were very young. Ana Velasquez supported her children by taking in laundry. Martin’s childhood poverty did not embitter him, but made him sensitive to the plight of the poor, and especially the orphans to whom he would devote much of his time and resources. Even as a child, Martin would give the family’s scarce resources to the beggars whom he saw as less fortunate than himself. Martin joined the Dominican Order of Preachers as a lay-brother. He continued to practice his old trades of barbering and healing and performed many, many miraculous cures. He also took on kitchen work, laundry, and cleaning. His relationship with his brothers was tinged by their curiosity and occasional pranks. For example, just before the meal was to be served, they would hide the potholders and Martin would have to lift the scalding pots with his bare hands. Yet never once did his fingers get burned! Martin’s spiritual practices were legendary. He would often fast for extensive periods of time on bread and water. He loved all-night vigils, frequently praying by lying down as if crucified, sometimes kneeling but, miraculously, a foot or more off the floor. Equally legendary was his love of animals. He would feed and heal all animals that came into his vicinity and they understood and obeyed him. St. Martin is often portrayed with mice because, according to one story, the monastery was tired of their rodent problems and decided to set traps. Martin was so distressed that he spoke to the mice and cut a deal with them that if they would leave the monastery, he would feed them at the back door of the kitchen. From that day forward, no mouse was seen in the monastery. However, it is St. Martin’s charity that made him the patron saint of social justice. Martin fed, sheltered and doctored hundreds of families.

  • Cooking with the Saints November
Meet St. Martin de Porres Martin was born in Lima, Peru in 1579 and had a tough childhood. His parents never married each other and after the birth of a sister, his father abandoned the family. Martin was bi-racial and reared in poverty, locked into a low level of Lima’s society. When he was 12, his mother apprenticed him to a barber-surgeon. Martin learned how to cut hair and also how to draw blood, care for wounds, and prepare and administer medicines. After a few years, Martin applied to the Dominicans to be a “lay helper,” not feeling himself worthy to be a religious brother. After nine years, the example of his prayer, penance, charity and humility led the community to request him to make full religious profession. Many of his nights were spent in prayer; his days were filled with nursing the sick and caring for the poor. It was particularly impressive at that time that he treated all people regardless of their color, race, or status. He was instrumental in founding an orphanage, took care of slaves brought from Africa, and managed the daily alms of the monastery with practicality, as well as generosity. Side by side with his daily work in the kitchen, laundry, and infirmary, Martin’s life reflected God’s extraordinary gifts and many extraordinary miracles took place in Martin's life: ecstasies that lifted him into the air, light filling the room where he prayed, bi-location, miraculous knowledge, instantaneous cures, and a remarkable rapport with animals. He was a good friend of another saint of Peru, Rose of Lima.

More broadly and open-endedly, an objective is to become aware of black Roman Catholics in the history of Chicago. This is entirely teacher-driven. Primary grades could merely use the sketch of du Sable for identification, while junior high grades can extrapolate the material to explore other related things (e.g., the development of the Church in segregated Chicago and the challenges which that fact presents to us as Church now). If the timelines are unhelpful, then the information could be given (or researched by the students): What was going on in the Catholic Church at this time

African American Affairs Ministry Diocese of Charlotte African American Affairs Ministry Diocese of Charlotte Fall 2020 Vol. I Black Catholic History Month Uniquely Black: Uniquely Catholic July 24, 1990, the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus of the United States designated November as Black Catholic History Month to celebrate the long history and proud heritage of Black Catholics. The reason behind the selection of the month of November was the number of important dates to Catholics of African descent that fell within this month. Nov. 1 - All Saints Day: an opportunity to review the lives of the hundreds of Saints of African descent in the first 300 years of the Church. Nov. 2 - All Souls Day: a time to remember all those African lost to cruel treatment in the Middle Pas- sage crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. Nov. 3 - Martin de Porres became the first black American saint. He was canonized by Pope John XXIII on May 16, 1962. Throughout his life, St. Martin de Porres exemplified God’s love for all people, regard- less of their level in society. Nov. 13 - The birth of St. Augustine in 354 A.D., the first Doctor of the Church from North Africa. Nov. 20 - The death of Zumbi of Palmares in Brazil, South American founder of a free state for Blacks. Black Catholic History began in the Acts of the Apostles (8: 26-40) with the conversion of the Ethiopian Eunuch by Philip the Deacon. This text is important for several reasons. It chronicles the conversion of the first Black African in recorded Christian history.

  • St Martin De Porres (1579-1639)
St Martin de Porres (1579-1639) Saint Martin was born in Peru. Martin’s mother was a freed slave of either Native American or African origin. As a result of this Martin suffered much discrimination and was abandoned by his Spanish father. At that time in Peru descendants of Indians and Africans were not permitted to join religious orders so at the age of 15 Martin joined the Dominicans in Lima as a helper. A few years later the prior overlooked this rule and allowed Martin to take his vows and become a lay brother. He was well known for his austere lifestyle and life of prayer. Martin was placed in charge of the infirmary and spent his life caring for the sick and dying. He also founded a home for orphans and abandoned children in Lima. Martin died on 3 November, 1639. He was beatified in 1837 and canonized in 1962. He is the patron saint of people of mixed race and race relations as well as barbers and innkeepers. His feast day is celebrated on 3 November.
