FROM THE DESK OF FR. LIJO Page 3 ST. MARTIN DE PORRES, APOSTLE OF CHARITY

As we celebrate the feast of our patron let us take some time to reflect on the life and holiness of this great saint. St. Martin de Porres was born on December 9, 1579 in , . His mother was African and his father was Spanish, a gentleman in the aristocracy. His father abandoned him when he was a child, leaving his mother, younger sister, and Martin to live in abject poverty. Martin would spend much of his early life battling the racism of his day and was often ridiculed for being of mixed race. He was eventually befriended by a barber/surgeon who taught him the art of medicine and healing. This training would be pivotal in his life. Despite his difficulties, Martin learned to pray and love our Lord from a very early age. Martin was a spiritual warrior. He became a Dominican lay brother but never a priest. He lived in a community and went about doing ministry in his own way.

Martin de Porres’ ministry was expressed through a different door of evangelization, caring for, the sick and the dying of his Domini- can community, the despised of the streets of Lima, and for those who had no hope. Assigned as the infirmarian of his Dominican community, which at the time numbered nearly three hundred , Martin applied his skills acquired as a barber/surgeon to the brothers of the community. Caring for his brothers in his community was his first preaching. Martin also cared for those who came to the door of the priory seeking help. So concerned, however, was he with how he might find others who needed help, Martin would travel the streets of Lima and bring the sick home and into his cell to nurse their wounds. It was on more than one occasion that he was reported to the prior of the community for bringing the destitute and strangers into the Dominican community.

St. Martin’s encounters in caring for others were both enriched and radically dependent on his encounters with Christ in the presence of the Eucharist. Though it was not the custom of the time to receive the Eucharist daily. Martin spent hours each day, and often well into the night, in contemplative adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, even when other brothers in the community were fast asleep. This prayer totally enveloped him and brought him into the life and healing ministry of Christ. This radical association with Jesus is often portrayed with him pressing a cross to his chest. The Eucharist as the Sacrament of charity, enabled Martin’s works of mercy and compassion.

St. Martin became known for encompassing the virtues need to carefully and patiently care for the sick, even in the most difficult situations. Martin was praised for his unconditional care of all people, regardless of race or wealth. He took care of everyone, he did not care if the person was diseased or dirty, he would welcome them into his own home.

Martin’s life reflected his great love for God and all of God’s gifts. It is said he had many extraordinary abilities, including aerial flights, , instant cures, miraculous knowledge, spiritual knowledge and an excellent relationship with animals. Martin also founded an orphanage for abandoned children and slaves.

St. Martin passed away on November 3, 1639 due to illness with chills, fevers and tremors causing him agonizing pain. By the time he had died he was widely known and accepted. Talks of his miracles in medicine and caring for the sick were everywhere. After his death, the miracles received when he was invoked in such greatness that when he was exhumed 25 yeas later, his body exhaled a splendid fragrance and he was still intact.

St. Martin de Porres was beatified by Gregory XVI on October 29, 1837 and canonized by Pope John XXIII on May 6, 1962. He has become the of people of mixed race, innkeepers, barbers, public health workers and more. St, Martin, we present our humble petitions to you, so that your faith and humility may bring them to our Father in Heaven. Continue to be close to us as you live with the Lord in heaven and seek favors on our behalf.

St. Martin de Porres, Pray for us! Fr. Lijo Kallarackal
