FOREWORD PATRIZIA BETTELLA PINOCCHIO AND CHILDREN LITERATURE With the world-wide celebrations for the one hundred and twentieth anniversary of Carlo Collodi's Le avventure di Pinocchio just behind us and with the new or revived attention in recent years to minority literature and cultural studies, it is very appropriate to devote a special issue of Quaderni d'italianistica to Pinocchio. ' The articles presented here testify not only to the ever-growing interest in and to the generativity of Collodi's master- piece, but also to the scholarly commitment of bringing Pinocchio and chil- dren's literature from the traditional sphere of literary analysis into the domain of cultural studies. Expressions of 'low culture' such as television, film, Reality TV shows and Hollywood cinema are traditionally viewed with suspicion by intellectuals and excluded from academic scholarship, while children's literature is often confined to the specialized area of minor- ity literature. In recent years however, even among Italian scholars, more emphasis has been placed on the significance of a broad-ranging concept of culture, on the need to transcend rigid distinction between 'high' and 'low culture' and give serious consideration to various aspects of cultural practice such as children's literature, film, television and Reality TV. By viewing such instances of popular culture as an expression of social, polit- ical and power relations, the articles in this issue contribute to the cultur- In 2003 the anniversary of Le avventure di Pinocchio was honoured in North America with scholarly sessions at conferences in both Canada and the United States. In fact, some of the articles in this issue (Bettella's, Anselmi's, and Hogan's) were first presented during a special session on Pinocchio and children's literature at the congress of the Canadian Society for Italian Studies held, that year, in Halifax. -

Meet the Blue Fairy as she leads us on a magical journey through this retelling of the classic story. One day, Geppetto, the poor, old toymaker, finds an extraordinary piece of talking wood. He brings it home and decides to make it into a puppet named Pinocchio. Disagreeable Pinocchio immediately gets into trouble and learns important lessons. When he bullies a little cricket, he’s reminded to respect others. When he runs away, gets lost and tries to find his way home, he’s reminded of the wonderful life he had with Geppetto. When Pinocchio decides he no longer wants to be a puppet but a real boy, the Blue Fairy steps in and reminds him that if he wants to be real, he has to be good. -

Once Upon a Time There Was a Piece of Wood. It Wasn't a Fine Type of Wood
Once upon a time there was a piece of wood. It wasn’t a fine type of wood, the kind that’s used to make toys or furniture for the sitting room, but a cheap wood, good for burning in the fireplace. Old Geppetto, who worked as a carpenter, decided to use it to make the puppet that he had long wished for. The next day, Geppetto almost fainted when he saw Pinocchio skip around the house. “Dad, I want to go to school!” trilled the puppet in a voice that sounded like little silver bells. As he didn’t have a penny in his pockets, Geppetto rushed to sell the only coat he had to buy a spelling book, and sent him off to school. Along the way, Pinocchio heard a music of pipes and drums and discovered… a travelling show, no less! “Pinocchio, go to school!” said his When he had finished, the man rested his puppet conscience, but he on a shelf and said, admiringly: “Ah, wouldn’t it be wouldn’t listen and he nice if he was a real boy? A Few Hours in Bologna – the Chair's View
A Few Hours in Bologna – the Chair’s View Are you going to spend only a few hours in the city centre of Bologna, between a keynote speech and a technical session? Here are few suggestions for a walk. Do not expect to find here necessarily what can be found in an official guide! ------------ Let’s start the walk in Piazza Maggiore (the main square). On each side, a wonderful piece of history. First, San Petronio’s church, unfinished (it was originally meant to be larger than San Pietro in Rome, but then it was not completed for various reasons: lack of financial resources, and, someone says, because Rome was not pleased by the idea…). On the West side, Palazzo d’Accursio – the old town hall – with the beautiful statue of Pope Gregorio XIII, looking at the square since the 16th century. On the East side, Palazzo de’ Banchi; built during the 15th century, it was used – and still it is! – as location of shops (at that time, mostly for money exchange; today, for money waste!) with a number of fine and expensive fashion shops aligned under the portico, named the “Pavaglione”. Finally, on the North side is Palazzo del Podestà, even older: built during the 13th century. For a visit, you just need to wait for the conference banquet that will be held there. The best place to look at the facades on the four sides is from the centre of the square, with your feet on the “crescentone”: the big rectangular curb that was built on 1934 to protect pedestrians from vehicular traffic, nicknamed after the popular “crescenta”, a fried food specialty for the locals.
