Slater’s Directory 1852‐1853 SAINT COLUMB, NEWQUAY and NEIGHBOURHOODS Contributed by Pauline Pickup SAINT COLUMB is a neat market town, in the parish of St. Columb Major, and hundred of Pyder, 244 miles from London, 70 from Exeter, and eight from Padstow. The town, situated on an agreeable eminence, surrounded by good meadow land, consists chiefly of one street, the greater part of the houses of which are well built. The trade of the place is inconsiderable: wool‐combing is a branch carried on by two or three houses; in the parish tin is found, but in small quantities; and the few steam‐works carried on are of minor consequence. A neat and commodious Town Hall was erected in 1848, affording suitable accommodation for the meeting of magistrates, who hold petty sessions monthly, for the county court, and other public purposes; the basement is appropriated as a market place. The parish church of St. Columb is a venerable and handsome structure, of the perpendicular and decorated style of architecture. The old parsonage house is said to have been built by Bishop Arundel, and at one time occupied by an establishment of Black Monks. It has lately been rebuilt by the present rector and patron, the Rev. Samuel Edward walker, D.D. There are places of worship for Independents, Wesleyan Methodists, and Bible Christians. Amongst other mansions in the vicinity is “Lanhern House”, formerly a seat of Lord Arundel, now occupied by a society of Carmelite nuns, who took refuge here when expelled from France by the revolution. There are some pleasant seats in the vicinity of St. Columb; and many families of high respectability, and some of very ancient descent are residents of the neighbourhood. The market is held on Thursday; and the fairs on the first Thursday after 12th of November. The parish of St. Columb Major contained, in 1841, 3,146 inhabitants, but had decreased, according to the late census of 1851, to 2,930. NEWQUAY is a small seaport and rising watering place, in the parish of Saint Columb Minor, six miles from Saint Columb Major, surrounded by picturesque scenery. A safe harbour has been constructed and a railway, for the conveyance of stone, ore, &c., formed across the country to Towey, by the late J.T. Treffrey, Esq. There are several respectable lodging houses here. The parish church and chapels for Baptists and Wesleyan Methodists are places of worship. Population of the parish of St. Columb Minor, 2,250. POST OFFICE, St. Columb, Catherine George, Post Mistress. – Letters from LONDON and all parts arrive (from BODMIN) every day at ten minutes before twelve, and are despatched thereto at noon.
