NEW IRONSIDES: THE SEAGOING IRONCLAD IN THE UNION NAV7 William Howard Roberts Old Dominion University, 1992 Director: Dr. Harold L. Wilson Of the ironclads completed by the Union during the Civil War, only the U.S.S. New Ironsides was a seagoing, high-freeboard design. Her seagoing qualities and heavy battery made her uniquely valuable to the Union in combat. Although New Ironsides was highly successful and her high- freeboard design squarely in the European mainstream, she represented the last of her direct line in the U.S. Navy. The lessons learned from her construction and wartime ser­ vice, which should have provided invaluable instruction for U.S. designers, were not followed up. By failing to develop the seagoing ironclad the United States forfeited the advan­ tages it might have gained over European navies from its extensive combat experience. The Navy was unable to con­ vince Congress that money for ironclads would be well spent, and the U.S. Navy's best opportunity to build a seagoing ironclad fleet was lost for a generation. CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION: THE NEGLECTED IRONCLAD I have never yet seen a vessel that came up to my ideas of what is required for offensive operations as much as the Ironsides.1 Admiral David Porter's words elicit little modern rec­ ognition. To most, "ironclad" is synonymous with "monitor," and scholars give New Ironsides but a few lines.2 Yet this seagoing broadside ironclad presented one of the earliest instances in which the U.S. Navy's tacticians and strate­ gists were forced to adapt to technological change. The new technology of iron and steam, pressed into service with neither precedent, wartime experience, nor sound theory to guide the designers, yielded both unanticipated strengths and unforeseen weaknesses. New Ironsides participated in more engagements and fired more shots than any other Civil War ironclad. Her strategic importance to the blockade of Charleston and her :Rear Admiral David D. New Ironsides was in the mainstream of ironclad development; while the low freeboard monitors were an evolutionary dead end, New Ironsides was of the high freeboard line that led to the dreadnought battleship. Despite her highly successful career, New Ironsides herself had no direct descendant in the U.S. Navy. Her bright promise was neglected in the post-War reaction, and by the time the U.S. Navy again turned to seagoing iron­ clads, she had been forgotten. This is her story. CHAPTER TWO GENESIS: IMPETUS AND DESIGN By mid-1861, it was evident that the Union needed iron­ clad warships.1 The impetus was clear: a Confederate iron­ clad program was already underway. The Confederate Navy could not hope to challenge the U.S. Navy with conventional wooden ships, so Confederate Secretary of the Navy Stephen R. Mallory placed his faith not in numbers but in technolo­ gy. As he phrased the idea, "Inequality of numbers may be compensated by invulnerability."2 Although there were several Confederate projects un­ derway, the Federals worried most about the conversion of the partially destroyed frigate U.S.S. Merrimack into the ironclad C.S.S.     CONFEDERATE HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION OF BELGIUM Nassau, Bahamas (Illustrated London News Feb. 10, 1864) By Ethel Nepveux During the war, the Economist was a workhorse for the Confederacy and her owners, the Trenholm firms, John Fraser & Co. of Charleston, South Carolina, and Fraser, Trenholm & Co. of Liverpool, England, and British Nassau and Bermuda. The story of the ship comes from bits and pieces of scattered information. She first appears in Savannah, Georgia, where the Confederate network (conspiracy) used her in their efforts to obtain war materials of every kind from England. President Davis sent Captain James Bulloch to England to buy an entire navy. Davis also sent Caleb Huse to purchase armaments and send them back home. Both checked in to the Fraser, Trenholm office in Liverpool which gave them office space and the Trenholm manager Charles Prioleau furnished credit for their contracts and purchases. Neither the men nor their government had money or credit. George Trenholm (last Secretary of the Treasury of the Confederacy) bought and Prioleau loaded a ship, the Bermuda, to test the Federal blockade that had been set up to keep the South from getting supplies from abroad. They sent the ship to Savannah, Georgia, in September 1861. The trip was so successful that the Confederates bought a ship, the Fingal. Huse bought the cargo and Captain Bulloch took her himself to Savannah where he had been born and was familiar with the harbor. The ship carried the largest store of armaments that had ever crossed the ocean. Bulloch left all his monetary affairs in the hands of Fraser, Trenholm & Co.

Fuller University of Wolverhampton Department of War Studies ________________________________________________________________________ Over a thousand pages long, the 1896 Naval History of the United States, by Willis J. Abbot, typically does not even mention Fox. “The story of the naval operations of the civil war is a record of wonderful energy and inventive skill in improving and building war vessels,” the story goes, and by the end of the conflict “the navy of the United States consisted of six hundred and seventy-one vessels. No nation of the world had such a naval power. The stern lessons of the great war had taught shipbuilders that wooden ships were a thing of the past. The little ‘Monitor’ had by one afternoon’s battle proved to all the sovereigns of Europe that their massive ships were useless,” (685-7). Of course the perception here is deterministic; it was a matter of American ‘destiny’ that the North would triumph, or even that the Union Navy would become a leading ironclad power—whatever that meant. Heroic naval admirals like Farragut, Porter and Du Pont seemed to operate under orders issued from behind a mysterious curtain back in Washington, D.C. We don’t see those hidden, historic actors who actually designed and launched the fine naval force Union officers wielded throughout the Civil War (often with mixed results).

    The Cape Fear Civil War Round Table John Taylor Wood: Man of Action, Man of Honor By Tim Winstead History 454 December 4, 2009 On July 20, 1904, a short obituary note appeared on page seven of the New York Times. It simply stated, "Captain John Taylor Wood, grandson of President Zachary Taylor and nephew of Jefferson Davis, died in Halifax, N.S. yesterday, seventy-four years old." The note also stated that Wood served as a United States Navy midshipman, fought in the Mexican War, served as a Confederate army colonel on the staff of Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee's army, escaped the collapse of the Confederacy with General Breckinridge to Cuba, and was a resident of Halifax, Nova Scotia when he passed. In one paragraph, the obituary writer prepared the outline of the life of a man who participated in many of the major events of the American Civil War. John Taylor Wood's story was much more expansive and interwoven with the people and history of the Civil War era than the one paragraph credited to him by the Times. This paper examined the events in which Wood found himself immersed and sought to determine his role in those events. The main focus of the paper was Wood's exploits during his service to the Confederate States of America. His unique relationships with the leadership of the Confederacy ensured that he was close at hand when decisions were made which affected the outcome of the South's gamble for independence. Was John Taylor Wood the Forrest Gump of his day? Was it mere chance that Wood was at Hampton Roads on March 9, 1862, at Drewry's Bluff on May 15, 1862, abroad the USS Satellite in August 1863, aboard the USS Underwriter at New Berne in February 1864, abroad the CSS Tallahassee in August 1864, or with Jefferson Davis on the "unfortunate day" in Georgia on May 10, 1865? Was it only his relationship with Jefferson Davis that saw Wood engaged in these varied events? This paper examined these questions and sought to establish that it was Wood's competence and daring that placed him at the aforementioned actions and not Jefferson Davis's nepotism.
