But what make these linguistic elements special when compared to other demonstratives is their very specific referential preferences. Neuter demonstrative pronouns ‘esto’, ‘eso’ and ‘aquello’ are commonly used in discourse to refer to a particular set of higher-order, discourse entities: the so-called abstract entities. These include propositional objects and eventualities of various types that are frequently found within sentential limits. But other times, these semantic objects stretch beyond the sentence to be only found in larger pieces of discourse. These basic issues, largely ignored in the studies of Spanish linguistics so far, are fully addressed in this dissertation. Thus, a corpus study is carried out with an aim at uncovering the speaker’s preferences regarding the referential features of Spanish demonstrative pronouns and a detailed study provided that explores into the morphosyntactic and semantic nature of their most common abstract referents. As these elements lack any sort of explicit ostension, Spanish demonstrative pronouns have been traditionally considered as not belonging in the group of deictic expressions. As a consequence of that, only their pronominal nature has been taken into consideration when applied to their discourse behavior. ii Here, I provide a characterization for Spanish demonstrative pronouns as generalized quantifiers and defend the idea that these elements still retain a deictic component that would allow me to group them on a par with demonstrative determiners. This deictic component that demonstrative pronouns have, though clearly not in the form of an overt pointing act in the canonical sense, is rather conceived of as presuppositional in nature. It is still a pointing device which serves the function of directing the hearer to look for the pronoun’s referent in the set of familiar discourse referents while allowing the speaker to mark it as cognitively activated. Based on the speaker’s referential preferences when it comes to make use of demonstrative pronouns to anaphorically refer in discourse to eventualities, and attested by a corpus study carried out with that purpose, I also defend the idea that while demonstrative pronouns ‘esto’ and ‘eso’ seem to have lost any trace of a [± proximity] spatio-temporal condition, demonstrative pronoun ‘aquello’ is still marked with a [+ distal] feature. This content, which is also modeled in terms of setting-up presuppositional DRSs for demonstrative pronouns, it also allowed me to postulate a reduction of the tripartite system of Spanish demonstrative pronouns into a basic binary system whereby ‘esto’ and ‘eso’ would be grouped together as being unspecified with respect to proximity and ‘aquello’ being the term most frequently used in modern Spanish to mark distance in the spatio-temporal axis. iii Dedicado a mis padres iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I wish to thank my academic adviser Javier Gutiérrez-Rexach for all the patience, intellectual advice, insightful comments and research help throughout all these years. While the data presented here are synchronic, we approach the topic of DM sequencing from the perspective of grammaticalization. From this perspective, DMs can be understood as the result of a process in which elements serving other functions, for example grammatical functions at the level of sentential syntax, come to be conventionally used as markers of discourse-level relations, or what Schiffrin (1987: 31) operationally defined as “sequentially dependent elements which bracket units of talk.” Here we are concerned with the final outcome of this process. We ask: to what degree do fully formed DMs retain or lose the grammatical properties associated with their previous role, specifically their syntactic co-occurrence constraints? In other words, what degree of syntactic decategorialization (in the sense of Hopper 1991) do DMs display? This raises the question of how DMs grammaticalize. As they constitute a broad and diverse class of elements with different developmental trajectories, we draw on Auer’s (1996) taxonomy of relevant grammaticalization processes, which covers a wide range of diverse types. Auer’s analysis deals specifically with grammaticalization in the syntactic position known as the “pre-front field” (Vor- Vorfeld) of spoken German. Previous literature on Spanish has analyzed null objects referring to first order entities, mostly in varieties in contact with other languages. This dissertation contributes to the literature on anaphora in Spanish by establishing and analyzing the existence of propositional null objects in two monolingual dialects, Mexican and Peninsular Spanish. A variationist approach was used to discover the significant constraints on the variation of the null pronoun and the overt clitic lo in Mexican and Peninsular Spanish. Following the generalizations from the previous literature on two separate areas of study, anaphora resolution and null objects (Chapter 2), several internal factor groups were included in the coding scheme. In Chapter 3, I provide an explicit statement of the envelope of variation and I specify the coding scheme employed. Chapter 4 offers the results of the multivariate analyses of Mexican and Peninsular Spanish. These results show that some of the linguistic constraints conditioning the variation are shared by both dialects (presence of a dative pronoun, type ii of antecedent, sentence type), suggesting that the null pronoun has the same grammatical role in both dialects.

The study combines modern performance theories concerning the relationship between actor and audience with a detailed examination of the demonstratives ὅδε and οὗτος in a representative sample of tragedy (and satyr play) and in the full Aristophanic corpus, and reaches conclusions that aid and expand our understanding of both tragedy and comedy. In addition to exploring and interpreting a number of particular scenes for their inter-actor dynamics and staging, I argue overall that tragedy’s predilection for ὅδε , a word which by definition conveys a strong spatio- temporal presence (“this <one> here / now”), pointedly draws the spectators into the dramatic fiction. The comic poet’s preference for οὗτος (“that <one> just mentioned” / “that <one> there”), on the other hand, coupled with his tendency to directly acknowledge the audience individually and in the aggregate, disengages the spectators from the immediacy of the tragic tetralogies and reengages them with the normal, everyday world to which they will return at the close of the festival.

In this line, a mixed qualitative quantitative approach was conducted over a period of fifteen weeks on sixty English major students enrolled in their first year at the Lebanese University, fifth branch. The sixty participants were divided into two groups (30 experimental) that benefited from instruction on exophoric and endophoric relations and (30 control) that did not have the opportunity to study referents in the designated period of the research. The participants sat for a reading and writing pretest at the beginning of the study; and they sat again for the same reading and writing assessment at the end of the study. The results of the pre and post tests for both groups were analyzed via SPSS program and findings were as follows: hypothesis one stating that students who are aware of endophoric and exophoric relations are likely to achieve better results in decoding a text than are their peers who receive no referential instruction, was accepted with significant findings. Hypothesis two stating that students who are aware of endophoric and exophoric relations are likely to perform better in writing than their peers who receive no referential instruction , was accepted with significant findings.

The conclusion of the research results is that most occurrences of demonstrative this are attended and these occurrences are stable across levels, similar to those in MICUSP.

INTRODUCTION All natural languages allow reference to places, ex­ pression of spatial relations and localization of objects and events. The specific devices which they have developed to that purpose vary considerably. This may also be true for the underlying concept of space (Malotki, 1979), but there are some general features, as well. Two of them are particularly relevant to the question of how human exper­ ience is reflected in language structure. First, place ref­ erence, or local reference, is typically not obligatory. Its expression or lack thereof is left up to the speaker. Temporal reference, on the other hand, is very often obli­ gatory. It is a built-in feature of many languages. With a a few exceptions, utterances in these languages will be "tensed." Second, all languages exhibit two strategies of local (and often other) reference, one of them rooted in the actual speech situation (deictic reference) and the other one not. I have nothing to say here about the asymmetry between temporal and local reference, except that it is a mystery and casts some doubt on the truism that time and space are equally fundamental categories of human experience : at least, the marks they have left in the structure of very many languages, including the familiar Indoeuropean 283 languages, are not equally deep.1 The difference between deictic and non-deictic reference is best exemplified by two series of expressions.
