2 Welcome to the 6th Food and Drink Festival.

Wigtown Food Festival serves up an annual feast of delectable food and drink in a friendly atmosphere, amid the breathtaking landscapes of south-west .

The festival has an emphasis on showcasing the welcoming food establishments in Wigtown and the along with the most imaginative skilled food producers, farmers, chefs and food writers from around Scotland and the north of England.

Joining in the celebrations are a tasty choice of delightful establishments – from our local gin distillery on the edge of to a moreish Italian restaurant in to the attractive Harbour Inn in .

Naturally the businesses of Scotland’s National Book Town, as our host town, will be serving up a platter of delights, with some amazing home cooking, the best of teas and coffees and a menu of tempting events. Exhibitors

We open this year’s Festival with a Cheese and Wine evening showcasing :

Cairn o Mohr Winery from Errol in Perthshire where Ron and Judith Gillies have been brewing up award- winning Country wines with smooth well-developed flavours. They believe in sourcing locally and the Carse of Gowrie has some of the best fruit in the world.

Ethical Dairy Cheeses from Rainton Farm at Gatehouse of Fleet. Wilma and David Finlay make traditional cheeses from unpasteurised organic milk from their own dairy herd where the calves remain with their mothers, the first commercial dairy herd in the UK to use such a method.

10am to 3.30pm – Market Place Stallholders offering a fabulous, varied selection of produce from near and far. (see exhibitor list pages 4 to 6)

10.30am to 11.30am – Tony’s Food Tour Join Tony for a ‘Celebration of Local Fish’. Born in Belfast but now Castle Douglas based, Tony Budde is an award-winning chef with over 30 years of experience including working at Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant and Cafe in Padstow and running his own Seafood Grill in Kincardine. Enjoy the craic and there will be plenty of samples.

11am to 2pm – Machars Young Farmers Club Pop-up Tea Room £4 (adult) £2 (child). A warm welcome and delectable home baking awaits at the Young Farmer Tea Room as members swap their wellies for wooden spoons to raise funds for various local charities.

12 noon – Half Moon Gardens Create a bee friendly summer wreath with Gill Butler- Orli. RHS trained Gill has been running courses and workshops for over 20 years. Gill and husband, Andrew, run a garden design and maintenance business based in the Machars. Free event and all materials supplied.

2pm to 4pm – Cook School Under the creative eye of award-winning chef Tony Budde, conjure up some amazing dishes to impress your friends and maybe even yourself. Bring a tub to take your creation home. Tickets £10 – all ingredients provided.

2pm – Curly Tale Books Story telling for little ones at 18 North Main Street. Bees and honey and stories galore...

7pm – Kitchen Coos and Ewes : Home Grown Tourism at Beltie Books and Cafe, 6 Bank Street, Wigtown Neale and Janet McQuistan will introduce you to their plans for Farm Tours and more at Airyolland Farm near Glenluce. They breed Beltex, Bluefaced Leicester and Scotch Mule sheep. They also farm the infamous native breed to Scotland - Highland Cattle.

Free but ticketed as places are limited. A wee glass of wine available too. Events

12pm – Western Galloway Beekeepers’ Association An illustrated talk by Linda Robertson of WGBA is sure to be informative and fascinating. It’s a great chance to

2pm to 4pm – Cook School Under the creative eye of award-winning chef Tony Budde, conjure up some amazing dishes to impress your friends and maybe even yourself. Bring a tub to take your creation home. Tickets £10 – all ingredients provided.

3.30pm to 6pm – Wigtown Food Festival goes on farm – a working dairy farm, including a chance to watch the milking.

And to close...

The Pheasant – Italian food tasting with a focus on local and seasonal produce. ‘Great Food Prepared With Love’ dinner at The Pheasant is always a joy. Andrea and Morag host a dinner as the final event in this year’s festival. Born and bred in Naples, Andrea’s cooking reflects his upbringing and the menu is inspired by authentic Italian dishes using local and seasonal produce. All served in stylish surroundings. Booking is essential – contact The Pheasant 01988 850270. £27 per head. 3 course Set Menu and welcome drink – 7pm.

15 Machars Young Farmers Club will be swapping their wellies for wooden spoons to raise funds for various local charities (including RSABI and RHET) at this years Wigtown Food Festival on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st July. They will be serving both days from 11am to 2pm in the Food Festival marquee. A warm welcome and delectable home baking awaits at the Young Farmers tea room. They look forward to seeing you there.

16 While you are in town for the Food Festival, please call into the shop to browse the extensive range of books on food from around the world: its history, traditions, recipes and ingredients. How to grow it, cook it, bake it, decorate it, eat it and drink it. You may be surprised to learn how often food features in fiction too – from being mentioned in the title to playing an essential role in the narrative. Here are two to get you thinking: Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle-stop Café by Fannie Flagg and Chocolat by Joanne Harris. Look out for our ‘honey-themed’ window too.

BELTIE Flat holiday accommodation The Western Galloway Beekeepers Association began in April 1935 and covers an area of South West Scotland which includes the Machars and the Rhins of Galloway and is affiliated with the Scottish Beekeepers Association. The Association has 30 to 40 members and is committed to promoting the health of bees and the art of beekeeping, especially with regards to encouraging the younger generation to take up the mantle. Members of the Association will be in attendance at Wigtown Food Festival during the weekend and will have a display on bees and bee products. Come along and talk to the experts on the hugely important skill of beekeeping.
