This year also, the core of this annual international event is overseen by art critic Elio Grazioli, with the support of many members of the Italian and European intellectual scene, including Laura Serani, Gabi Scardi, Madeleine Millot-Durrenberger, Melina Mulas, Giovanna Calvenzi, Adriana Polveroni, Paola Borgonzoni Ghirri, Daniele De Luigi, Annarosa Buttarelli, Vanni Codeluppi, Nicola Dusi, Antonello Frongia, Riccardo Panattoni. The event is promoted by the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, in cooperation with theMinistry for Arts and Culture - Department of Architecture and Contemporary Art, the Emilia- Romagna Region, the Province of Reggio Emilia, the Chamber of Commerce of Reggio Emilia, and the Cassa di Risparmio Pietro Manodori Foundation. This year’s edition, dedicated to Eternity, deals with the question of time in the photographic image. Photography in fact enjoys a very particular and special relationship with time: it has shown man the real instant, the present, for the first time, fixed in an image, but as soon as it is done, the moment has already passed, leaving the observer with a strange sensation. Looking at a photograph is always looking at the past. But above all there are moments and moments, some short, some long, suspended, vibrating, dilated, and there is the time of the image itself, inside the image, which captures and guides the viewer. Eternity indicates a long time, the time of suspension, meditation, sedimentation, the time of art; but it also evokes ideas of different, new temporal dimensions, which challenge change and persistency, with memory and together with new technologies. What idea do we have of eternity today, in the age of the Internet? Different places around the city will be involved in the programme with the many temporary exhibitions, running until 7th June, including San Carlo Church, the Mercato Coperto, the Synagogue, the Parmeggiani Gallery, Spazio Gerra, Palazzo delle Notarie, to name but a few; in addition to this rich array of exhibitions, during the opening days of the event a rich series of other events will be running, including conferences, video shows, meetings with artists, readings, performances and shows, with the contribution not only of the critics, photographers and artists involved but also authoritative Italian and international guests from the world of art and culture. In addition to the institutional exhibitions, Fotografia Europea 2009 is also enriched and enhanced by several exhibitions dedicated to the issues of photographic research, promoted by local authorities, institutions and associations, each of which adds to the value of the event and creates new paths within the city. Fotografia OFF, is also much larger this year than in the past: this section gathers together exhibitions throughout the municipalities of the province and the local galleries promoted by photography associations and clubs, on show also in the shops, restaurants and hotels which, with more than 150 participating photographers contribute to bringing the city to life. A section which exists thanks to the active participation of individual or groups of photographers who, sharing a passion, contribute to increasing the importance of this event and making it even more attractive. A new element of the 2009 edition is the OFF Focus: two areas in the historical centre have autonomously run participatory projects with photographic exhibitions and events which actively involve the businesses in the area. A whole month in which the city of Reggio Emilia will be filled with exhibitions, events and shows, in this great international event dedicated to Photography and to all its fans. Benvenuti a casa. The land we come from is our first home. Italy - and in particular our region, Apulia - is the source of inspiration that has always guided our choices and our success throughout the world. The colours of the sun and the olive trees, the hospitality and warmth of the people, the value of ancient traditions: these are the roots of our story and the foundations of our Italian heritage. A heritage that is authentically “Made in Italy”, which can be seen in our actions and our commitment to our customers: certified quality, direct control over the entire production chain and a code of ethics for our partners and suppliers. This is what we call the value chain. A chain of quality and passion for what we do, a voyage that has taken us all over the world but which starts here, in our land, every day. 3 Each model comes from “ our Style Centre, the group’s creative heart. The search for harmony is our mission and inspires every move we make.” A team of over 100 architects, designers, colourists and interior decorators work within the Natuzzi Style Centre. Every sofa, lamp, piece of furniture and accessory begins here. First come the shapes, the sizes and the proportions, then the colours and materials, selected only after carefully studying the latest trends in fashion, design 4 and customers’ needs. 6 The most emotional “moment is when the idea takes shape and what we had imagined finally unfolds before our eyes. ” It is the moment of truth in the prototypes area.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Reappropriating Desires in Neoliberal Societies through KPop A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in Asian American Studies By Daisy Kim 2012 © Copyright by Daisy Kim 2012 ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Reappropriating Desires in Neoliberal Societies through KPop By Daisy Kim Master of Arts in Asian American Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2012 Professor Victor Bascara, Chair ABSTRACT: This project analyzes contemporary KPop as a commercial cultural production and as a business model that emerged as the South Korean state’s U.S-aligned neoliberal project, and its functions as an ideological, political, and economic apparatus to effectively affect the production and reproduction of desires in the emergence of various sub-cultures at disparate sites across the globe. Legacies of colonialism, neocolonialism, and (late) capitalist developments that sanctioned the conditions for this particular form of mass and popular culture, KPop as a commercial commodity is also a contesting subject of appropriation and reappropriation by those in power and those in the margins. By examining the institutionalized and systematic new media platforms and internet technologies which enables new forms of globalized interactions with mass culture in general and KPop in particular, the thesis locates how resistant and alternative (sub) cultures emerge in variable conditions. Through newly found mediums online, emerging cultural formations challenge and negotiate the conditions of commercial and dominant systems, to allow various and localized subaltern (secondary) cultural identities to decenter, disrupt, and instigate KPop and its neoliberal governance, to reorient and reappropriate itself in the process as well.
