Spring security advice

As spring approaches the number of shed break-ins can increase. Items such as lawnmowers, bicycles, golf clubs, fishing tackle and power tools can all be kept insecurely in sheds and these can all be easy pickings for thieves to target. Things to consider:

▪ Keep garages and sheds locked while using tools and ensure you put them away after use. ▪ Install a shed alarm, with a notice displayed to warn thieves that it is not worth the effort of breaking in. The alarms are easy to install and can be purchased at most DIY stores. ▪ Ensure all valuable property is marked with your postcode. Post coding property makes your belongings very unattractive to a thief by making items easily identifiable and difficult to sell. ▪ Make sure fences around your home are secure and not broken. ▪ Planting defensive hedging and plants may help to deter criminals. ▪ Check your household insurance policy to ensure that the value of things stored inside is covered by your contents' policy. ▪ If you get home after dark, light timers can be used to give the impression you are home.

Recent Prosecutions

- Daniel Downs, of Arnold Nottinghamshire - fined by Magistrates on 8th November for the illegal deposit of waste at both Higg Lane, Alderwasley, and Anchor Road, Langley Mill. He had taken payments from two separate residents to remove their waste. He did not have a waste carrier’s licence and the waste collected was then later found fly-tipped. He was ordered to pay a total of £1,290.00, including fines, costs and victim surcharges.

- Ian Wells, of Cromford Road, appeared before Derby Magistrates Court on 14th November, after dropping a banana skin on Mansfield Road in Heanor, and refusing to accept a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN). He attempted to appeal the FPN using the Council’s internal procedure, but the appeal was refused. He was ordered to pay a total of £462.50 including the fine, costs and victim surcharge.

- Chevin Golf Club – fined by Derby Magistrates on 13th December after an accident with a deep fat fryer resulted in an employee sustaining serious burns. The employee sustained burns to both their left and right calf, the top of their right thigh, waist, back and upper torso, which required a skin graft. The Club was ordered to pay a total of £13,460 including the fine, costs and victim surcharge.

Derbyshire Alert returns

We are encouraging residents to register with Derbyshire Alert, a public messaging system that is being re-launched following a manifesto pledge by the Police and Crime Commissioner, Hardyal Dhindsa. The system allows people to receive information from the police and the commissioner regarding crime and information relating directly to the area where they live. Alert is the national messaging system used by Action Fraud and is utilised by the Home Office for national and regional surveys to help educate the public to protect themselves against Cybercrime and fraud.

Man interviewed following drugs warrant in Belper

A 28-year-old man has been interviewed by officers following a drug warrant at an address in Belper. Around 12 Cannabis plants and a quantity of cash was seized following the search at a property on Wheeldon Avenue on Thursday, December 20. Officers are continuing with their enquiries.

Christmas and New Year shoplifting campaign in Ripley sees fewer thefts than the previous year

Officers from the Ripley Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team have been stepping out in a seasonal campaign to shelve retail related crime in the town centre. Extra patrols were carried out around shops and supermarkets to help target shoplifting and prevent purse thefts on the run up to Christmas, and during the New Year period. As part of the campaign, officers have continued to work alongside local businesses and the town’s Shop Watch scheme.

Shopwatch

The Shopwatch Radio system played a part in the apprehension of an offender in Ripley recently. The man was spotted by staff in The Original Factory Shop on Oxford Street. The suspect took a large number of clothing items (£164) and left without paying. He was chased by the manager at the store. Using the Shopwatch radio, the manager kept the Police informed of his location. The man was eventually apprehended by the Police, after dropping a large bag of goods. He was found to have more goods on his person and he was also wanted for a prison recall. He had been wanted for a while. He was charged with the theft and will now be spending more time behind bars.
