Babatunde ii Digitized by Sam Jonah Library © University of Cape Coast https://erl.ucc.edu.gh/jspui ABSTRACT Despite the many studies on Ghanaian English, the structure of the verb phrase and, particularly, the relationship between the verb and its arguments have not featured prominently in these kinds of studies. Meanwhile, researchers in probabilistic linguistics who have shown some interest in non-native varieties of English have indicated that studies in dative alternation are crucial in affirming the validity and viability of a variety of English, as well as hold the key to the determination of specific varieties of English (Bresnan et al. 2007). This study thus focuses on the use of the dative alternation in Ghanaian English to determine the differences between the native British and non-native Ghanaian varieties. It also examines the contextual features which influence the dative choices. The corpus-based methodology is used to examine the lemmas of the verb give in dative alternation patterns in the International Corpus of English-Ghana (ICE-GH), and the Lancaster-Oslo/Bergen Corpus of British English (FLOB). The study reveals that the dative alternation of the forms of the verb give are manifested in both corpora, and the Ghanaian English dative alternation choices and their predictor variables are not considerably different from those of the British English. The study observes a common grounds of significance with regard to complexity at the levels of both few and lengthy, pronominality at the level of pronoun, definiteness at the level of definite, animacy at the level of animate, person at the levels of both local and non-local, number at the level of plural, and concreteness at the level of concrete.     A New Venture in Corpus-Based Lexicography: Towards a Dictionary of Academic English Iztok Kosem1 and Ramesh Krishnamurthy1 1. Introduction This paper asserts the increasing importance of academic English in an increasingly Anglophone world, and looks at the differences between academic English and general English, especially in terms of vocabulary. The creation of wordlists has played an important role in trying to establish the academic English lexicon, but these wordlists are not based on appropriate data, or are implemented inappropriately. There is as yet no adequate dictionary of academic English, and this paper reports on new efforts at Aston University to create a suitable corpus on which such a dictionary could be based. 2. Academic English The increasing percentage of academic texts published in English (Swales, 1990; Graddol, 1997; Cargill and O’Connor, 2006) and the increasing numbers of students (both native and non-native speakers of English) at universities where English is the language of instruction (Graddol, 2006) testify to the important role of academic English. At the same time, research has shown that there is a significant difference between academic English and general English. The research has focussed mainly on vocabulary: the lexical differences between academic English and general English have been thoroughly discussed by scholars (Coxhead and Nation, 2001; Nation, 2001, 1990; Coxhead, 2000; Schmitt, 2000, Nation and Waring, 1997; Xue and Nation, 1984), and Coxhead and Nation (2001: 254–56) list the following four distinguishing features of academic vocabulary: “1.     Open Linguistics 2015; 1: 458–466 Research Article Open Access Glenn Hadikin Lexical selection and the evolution of language units DOI 10.1515/opli-2015-0013 Received September 15, 2014; accepted May 27, 2015 Abstract: In this paper I discuss similarities and differences between a potential new model of language development - lexical selection, and its biological equivalent - natural selection. Based on Dawkins' (1976) concept of the meme I discuss two units of language and explore their potential to be seen as linguistic replicators. The central discussion revolves around two key parts - the units that could potentially play the role of replicators in a lexical selection system and a visual representation of the model proposed. draw on work by Hoey (2005), Wray (2008) and Sinclair (1996, 1998) for the theoretical basis; Croft (2000) is highlighted as a similar framework. Finally brief examples are taken from the free online corpora provided by the corpus analysis tool Sketch Engine (Kilgarriff, Rychly, Smrz and Tugwell 2004) to ground the discussion in real world communicative situations. The examples highlight the point that different situational contexts will allow for different units to flourish based on the local social and linguistic environment. The paper also shows how a close look at the specific context and strings available to a language user at any given moment has potential to illuminate different aspects of language when compared with a more abstract approach.
