Austin Roberts PRESENTATION BY MR GWYN MOSELEY - NATURAL RESOURCES WALES Mr Moseley from Natural Resources Wales gave a presentation regarding Maenan Flood Plan and the role of a Community Warden. He handed out document which outlined the work and the role of the Flood Community Warden and how they would be able to communicate with the Natural Resources Wales, Conwy Borough County Council and the Emergency Services. Mr Moseley explained the Flood Warning codes, and what steps should be taken if the Flood Community Warden should receive flood warning messages from Natural Resources Wales. He noted that there are different types of flood warning level 1)Low Flood Warning, 2)Severe Flood Warning, 3)Warning Abolition. He also explained that other people from the Maenan community can register to receive these messages. Mr Moseley explained the role of the Flood Warden. • Register to receive messages Flood Warning • Appointment of Senior Assistant Flood Warden and Flood Warden • Engage and residents - Ensure that residents are aware that there are Community Flood Plan for Maenan. - Encourage residents to register to receive messages Flood Warning - Explain the meaning of the Flood Warning codes. - Encourage residents to take responsibility to protect their property. • To liaise with relevant authorities. Assist each Flood Warden in the authority and willing to respond to floods classified information.

Called Aberconwy, it was built by Cistercian monks on land given to them by Llywelyn the Great. Llywelyn was a prominent supporter of the Cistercians, and after his long reign he spent his final years here. Following the English victory over Gwynedd in 1283, the monks were forced to move to Maenan Abbey further down the Conwy valley. Conwy became a military base for Edward’s army.     CARVED OAK FURNITURE FROM TUDOR WALES Richard Bebb The curious, but widely held, theory that all worthwhile furniture developments originated with the Court in London, and worked their way down the social scale by the process of imitation, seriously inhibits our understanding of regional styles. It is normally assumed that Welsh furniture is later than it appears, on account of the ‘remoteness’ of the region, and, conversely, when a piece can be shown to be early, that it must have been imported. I shall attempt to break out of this circular mode of thought by considering some pieces with impeccable provenances in their fullest social and historical context, and with reference to fixed woodwork from their areas. The powerful head in Figure i is one of a group of eleven, each different, which dominate the Gwydir Chapel adjoining Llanrwst Church in the Conwy Valley. Impossible to categorise, and therefore difficult to date, they have been disregarded and unanimously assigned to local craftsmanship on account of their ‘primitiveness’. But their dramatic and highly individual treatment, going far beyond the conceivable instructions of a patron, deserves more serious appreciation. The chapel was built in 1 63 3 as a monument to Sir John Wynn of Gwydir, and that is the latest date we can reasonably assign to the heads, which are integral to the stallwork. Local tradition claims that much of the woodwork for the church came from nearby Maenan Abbey, w’hich had originally been part of the Celtic church, and w’as dissolved a century' earlier. Heads, often severed, figure prominently in Celtic myth­ ology’, and a number of stone examples are known from the area.

  • The Burial of Llywelyn Ab Iorwerth and Other Venedotians in North Wales
    strove after giving good justice to all of his own men with the love and fear of God; he was sustained by those indebted to him by bonds of fear or affection. *431 The Burial of Llywelyn ab Iorwerth and other Venedotians in North Wales. The chronicles quoted above provide the evidence that Prince Llywelyn was buried in Aberconwy abbey in 1240. Yet there is little evidence as to the exact place of his burial or the fate of his remains or even his tomb, despite widespread claims in recent times. The so-called tomb of Prince Llywelyn (Fig.15) is said to have survived to the present day, being moved first to Maenan in the late 1280s and then, after the Dissolution of the abbey in 1537, to the Gwydir chapel, built in 1633 on the side of Llanrwst church. Here the partial tomb now stands near to a smaller lid with an effigy of Hywel Coetmor, an adherent of Owain Glyndwr who died some time in the early fifteenth century *432 . Hywel’s lid has lost its sarcophagus and is obviously too small to seal the so-called Llywelyn tomb. Undated sarcophagi similar to this still exist at Ellington, Cambridgeshire (Fig.14) and Fulbrook, Oxfordshire (Fig.16). No doubt there are many more still to be noted, but as undated monuments they add little to our understanding of the Llanrwst tomb. At first sight the tomb said to be that of Abbot Alexander Holderness of Peterborough (d.1226, Fig.17) might suggest that the style of this sarcophagus is early thirteenth century; however the apparent breaking and reshaping of the tomb to fit the effigy suggests that the two have been matched together at a later date.
