NLW/PD9162 PhD Archaeology 2015 Mark Baker Summary This thesis focuses on two main themes in the architectural history of the country house in Wales, investigating firstly its development, and secondly some of the distinctively Welsh features of these houses. It argues that both themes have been marginal in recent historiography of Welsh architecture, culture and society. In this work, houses owned by families of Welsh descent are discussed to ascertain whether ethnicity and nationhood are actually identifiable in the architecture. Critical analysis of built fabric is supplemented and supported by primary sources such as the poetry of the bards, building accounts and records, architectural drawings, travel journals, photographs, works of art and a variety of secondary sources. In this thesis, it becomes apparent that one of the most distinctive features of country houses in Wales is the unit-system. Thi s form of dual planning is a peculiarly Welsh feature, enabling two ‘households’ to co -exist simultaneously, adjacent to each other but not necessarily physically connected. Such forms of building are absent from most regions of England, and its presence here is due to differences in the development of the Welsh family. The existence of a different legal system and associated customs in Wales, such as the prominence of gavelkind and female inheritance, are thus expressed in physical form. This practice has set a precedent for design and planning which has influenced a distinctly Welsh country house plan, based not only upon the need to accommodate several family members but also on a desire to preserve the domestic property of their ancestors as a physical manifestation of precedency, pedigree and memory.

Conmor, Count of Poher, being impressed by a miracle, ordered a chapel to be erected over the saint's grave (LBS II.465 s.n. Ernin, and LBS III.282 s.n.Hoiernin). According to the seventh century Life of St.Samson (§53, where he is un-named) Conmor was an unjust and unprincipled stranger who had caused Ionas, the hereditary ruler [of Domnonée] to be put to death, so that all the country was in distress. Iudual, the son of Ionas, had been delivered into captivity. In the Life of St.Leonore we are told that Conmor seized power and married the widow of the dead king [Ionas] (wrongly called Righuel, see Riwal). But hearing of Conmor's approach, Leonore sent Iudual off by sea and when Conmor arrived and demanded the surrender of Iudual, Leonore was able to tell him that he had already left and gone to sea to seek refuge with Childebert [king of Paris 511 - 558].

    Croeso! Welcome! Diolch am eich diddordeb yn Ardal Genhadol Aberconwy, ac yn yr eglwysi. Thank you for your interest in the Aberconwy Mission Area and our church communities. We’re a group of ten churches in North Wales, serving an area from Llandudno to Llanrwst along the eastern side of the River Conwy. Right on the edge of Snowdonia, this is one of the most scenic parts of Wales, but still only an hour and a half from Manchester with good road and rail links to North West England, South Wales, London and Birmingham. The churches in our area have been working hard to grow in numbers and in spirituality over the last few years, and we have some impressive results to show for it. The first church in Wales to broadcast its Sunday services on social media is in our area, and our project using Lego to tell children about God led us all the way to the Rhyl Film Festival. We’ve sung evensong with four people in a camper van and sung carols to 400 people last Christmas. We’re working on a million pound project to restore one of our historic churches and place it at the heart of its community. And we have hundred pound bursaries for children to find out more about Jesus through traditional church music. But now we’re looking for someone to inspire us to keep the energy, the growth and the Holy Spirit at the centre of what we’re doing. Could you empower us to do even better?
