Each state‘s relative share of these programs is described. The geographic themes, patterns, and images from these programs are analyzed, with an emphasis on identity in five American regions: the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West. The dissertation concludes with a comparison of television‘s senses of place to those described in previous studies of regional identity. iii For Sue iv CONTENTS List of Tables vi Acknowledgments vii 1. • 'Oliver's Ghost'
‘OLIVER’S GHOST’ CAST BIOS MARTIN MULL (Clive) – Well known for his roles in “Rosanne,” “Ellen,” “Two and a Half Men” and “Clue,” actor and comedian Martin Mull has made himself a household name with his extensive career among Hollywood’s leading actors. Born in Chicago and raised in Ohio and Connecticut, funnyman Mull planned to become a painter when he enrolled in the Rhode Island School of Design. Although he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Masters in painting, Mull’s uncanny talent for stand-up comedy and satire led him to a career as a nightclub comedian, and eventually led to roles on television and film. Mull’s first role was on the nighttime absurdist soap opera “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman,” in which his character was impaled by a Christmas tree, only to be brought back as that character’s twin brother. That led to spin-off talk shows “Fernwood Tonight” and “America 2-Night,” where Mull shared the screen with Fred Willard. Other television credits include a guest role on “The Golden Girls,” a long-running role as the gay boss of the lead character on “Roseanne,” starring Roseanne Barr, the CBS sitcom “Domestic Life” and “Gary Unmarried.” He has had series regular roles on “The Ellen Show,” opposite Ellen DeGeneres, “Sabrina, The Teenage Witch,” “Family Dog,” “The Jackie Thomas Show,” “Two and a Half Men,” “’Til Death” and, most recently, “American Dad!” His recent guest star credits include roles on “Eastwick,” “Reno 911,” “Just Shoot Me,” “Life With Bonnie,” “Less Than Perfect,” “Reba,” “My Boys,” “Mad Love” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” He also appeared as a guest star on the popular game show “Hollywood Squares,” appearing as the center square during the show’s final season in 2004.

Nichols Professor of Communications Associate Dean for Graduates Studies and Research *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School ABSTRACT Competition and diversity are touchstones in media policy, but the relationship between them is not clear despite a great number of studies because even studies dealing with their relationship, did not measure the intensity of competition. This paper investigates the relationship between market competition and program type diversity in the over-the-air television industry. Specifically, market competition is divided into intra-network competition and intra-media competition, i.e. terrestrial television vs. cable TV. Also this paper uses a comprehensive model of program types, with 281 program type categories, which have never been used in previous studies. The results show that program type diversity keeps decreasing over time and intra-network competition has a negative effect on program type diversity. Also, intra- network competition is a more important factor on program type diversity than inter- media competition.

“I grew up loving cars and the Southern California car culture. My dad was a parts manager at a Chevrolet dealership, so ‘Cars’ was very personal to me — the characters, the small town, their love and support for each other and their way of life. I couldn’t stop thinking about them. I wanted to take another road trip to new places around the world, and I thought a way into that world could be another passion of mine, the spy movie genre. I just couldn’t shake that idea of marrying the two distinctly different worlds of Radiator Springs and international intrigue. And here we are.” — John Lasseter, Director ABOUT THE PRODUCTION Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Studios are off to the races in “Cars 2” as star racecar Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and his best friend, the incomparable tow truck Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy), jump-start a new adventure to exotic new lands stretching across the globe. The duo are joined by a hometown pit crew from Radiator Springs when they head overseas to support Lightning as he competes in the first-ever World Grand Prix, a race created to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the finish line is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and bombshells when Mater is mistakenly ensnared in an intriguing escapade of his own: international espionage. Mater finds himself torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and “towing” the line in a top-secret mission orchestrated by master British spy Finn McMissile (voice of Michael Caine) and the stunning rookie field spy Holley Shiftwell (voice of Emily Mortimer).

  • Image Formats for HDTV
HDTV ImageHDTV formats for John Ive Sony Europe – PSE For several years, European broadcasters have been making programmes in high definition – often based upon co-production deals with the USA and Japan – using the 1920 x 1080 Common Image Format. However, European consumers are currently restricted to down-converted standard-definition versions of the original full-resolution HD content. This situation will soon change as more broadcasters offer HD services – in addition to the pioneering and ground-breaking start made by Euro1080. This article offers an overview of HD scanning formats and advises European broadcasters not to go against the tide by introducing new production formats for HDTV. Broadcasting and television are now entering the era of High Definition (HD) – a transition as profound as the first introduction of television and the subsequent transition from black-and-white to colour television. Unfortunately Europe lags behind other parts of the world, denying consumers the chance to view HD programmes in anything other than standard definition. HD has been with us since the early 1990s but those early European attempts unfortunately proved to be unsuccessful. So what has changed? The renewed interest can be attributed to several factors, the main ones being: the availability of high-resolution, large, flat-panel displays for consumer use; a track record of success in other parts of the world; desk-top high-definition production and editing; significantly reduced costs. Before delving in to the details of scanning formats for high definition, it may be of interest to briefly review the origins of television and their respective picture formats.

In 2003, we experienced solid earnings growth despite the difficult economic and geopolitical environment that prevailed during most of the year. Most significantly, our fourth quarter was very strong, with more than double the earnings of Q4 in 2002, underscoring our confidence in generating growth in the new year. Equally important, we delivered free cash flow for the year that was up more than 50 percent over last year and continued to bolster our balance sheet. During fiscal 2003, our stock price appreciated 36 percent, compared to the S&P 500’s growth of 25 percent.

Fox Television Network In 1985 Rupert Murdoch, after acquiring the Twentieth Century Fox studio for a total of $575 million through his holding company, News Corporation (NewsCorp), decided to start a fourth broadcast network on the advice of Barry Diller, the highly sought-after ex- ecutive recently recruited to Fox from industry leader Paramount Studios. NewsCorp purchased Metromedia from media mogul John Kluge, gaining control of seven key in- dependent TV stations in several large East Coast cities and Los Angeles. Fox quickly lined up 88 additional independent stations to become its network affiliates and launched the Fox Television Network in 1986. Initially the network reached only 60% of the coun- try and aired original network programming only one night a week, on Sunday. Everyone in the industry thought Diller and Murdoch crazy. At the time the big three networks had a combined television viewing share of 93%. To attract viewers away from them, Fox chose to go after two key demographics: youth, a group coveted by advertis- ers, and African-Americans. As Diller said, “We had to air shows that demanded your attention, that yanked you by the throat to get you to change the channel.”1 Peter Chernin, a loyal executive who would eventually become Murdoch’s second in command, concurred: “We’re in the attention-getting business.
