  • Rnöý S9 Ýý6ý Ýx Colonel Oli Ahmad, Bir Bikram (Retd. ) June 2003
rnöý S9 ýý6ý ýx REVOLUTION, MILITARY PERSONNEL AND THE WAR OF LIBERATION IN BANGLADESH BY Colonel Oli Ahmad, Bir Bikram (Retd.) A Thesis Submitted to the School of Social Science & Law OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY In partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY June 2003 ABSTRACT The study has focused on the role and motivations of the Bengali military officers in the Pakistan Army during the initial but critical phase of the Liberation War of 1971. Unlike the military in some other Third World Countries, at that point of time, the Bengali military officers made a move neither for grabbing political power nor for replacing a corrupt or inept regime but for establishing an independent state of Bangladesh. The concept of liberation war has been used in this study in the senseof an internal war between East and West Pakistan. The aims of this thesis are to explain why the Bengali military officers became actors in the Liberation War of 1971, how they were motivated for this war, when they took the crucial decision to revolt and declare independence of Bangladesh and how they proceeded till the formation of the Bangladesh Government-in-exile. The findings are also noteworthy. The Bengali political leaders prepared the people of East Pakistan for a revolutionary movement, but at the critical moment they faltered. As one of the dominant social forces in East Pakistan, the Bengali military officers watched from close quarters how the ethnically, linguistically and culturally different East Pakistanis were subjected to the discriminatory policies of the ruling elite in Pakistan which led to the wholesale alienation of the Bengalis.

  • Landslide Inventory Report of Chittagong Metropolitan Area, Bangladesh
! Landslide Inventory Report of Chittagong Metropolitan Area, Bangladesh Submitted to International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) Submitted by BUET-Japan Institute of Disaster Prevention and Urban Safety (BUET-JIDPUS); Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka-1000, Bangladesh Authors Bayes Ahmed Md. Shahinoor Rahman Sonia Rahman Ferdous Farhana Huq Sharmin Ara BUET-Japan Institute of Disaster Prevention and Urban Safety ! ABSTRACT Landslides are one of the most significant natural damaging disasters in hilly environments. Chittagong Metropolitan Area (CMA), the second largest city of Bangladesh, is vulnerable to landslide hazard with an increasing trend of frequency and damage. Devastating landslides have hit CMA repeatedly in recent years. Landslide events occurred at a much higher rainfall amount compared to the monthly average. Moreover, rapid urbanization, increased population density, improper land-use, cutting of hills, indiscriminate deforestation and agricultural practices are aggravating the landslide vulnerability in CMA. Against this backdrop, it is essential to develop an early-warning system for the hilly communities of CMA incorporating local knowledge. The first step of developing early warning system is to prepare an inventory of all landslide locations. This report shows detailed information of all landslide locations of CMA. A landslide inventory has been prepared for the CMA area. To prepare inventory three steps have been followed. At first, existing achieves of landslide have been studied. Some information that could not have been found from existing achieves were collected from field survey. Participation of local people in field survey was a big part of field survey. Some other data that could not have been collected from field survey were collected through image interpretation.

The Pakistanis used to enjoy everyday after unleashing torture on us Capt (Retd) Syed Suzauddin Ahmed Syed Suzauddin Ahmed, a former director general of the Mass Communication Department, was a commissioned Bengalee officer in Pakistan Army during Liberation War. He was arrested on April 8, 1971 from Satkhira area. Then he had to suffer inhuman torture by the Pakistanis in the name of interrogation. His testimony was recorded on September 25, 1999. I was at Jessore on March 25, 1971. Being a resident of Bihari Colony, I saw the Biharis get panicky amidst the tension prevailing in the town. We assured the Biharis that Bengalees would not attack them. I went to the Awami League office to know the latest situation. At that time I was on two month’s leave. I did not return to Pakistan to join although my leave was finished. It was a major offense as per the rule of the armed services, but I wanted to see the result of the negotiation that was going on between Yahiya Khan and Bangabandhu. I thought that everything would be normal within a day or two and I would be able to return to Pakistan. I would have gone to Pakistan if the crack down had ocurred 6 or 7 days later. On the midnight of March 25, I came to know about heavy firing in Dhaka. I tried to make a phone call to one of my distant cousins who lived in Dhaka, but did not get him. That night I could not sleep due to the tension.

Although Civil-military relations have historically been recognized as a subject of study in the developed world, it has become a subject of study in the region since World War II due to military intervention in newly independent Third World countries. Although the country became independent on the basis of Civil-Military relations in the war of liberation of Bangladesh in 1971, the relations did not last long. Civil-Military relations have been the subject of renewed research in Bangladesh since the establishment of the military-backed government on 1/11, 2007. The study discusses the historical context of Civil-Military relations, the nature of Civil-Military relations in Bangladesh, various activities under military rule, and political leadership. The roles of the military in the formation of the country have been analyzed.

Bangladesh’s Participation in UN Peacekeeping Mission: An Assessment of Its Socio-economic Implications for Participating Troops M.Phil. Thesis MD. TANVEER ISLAM M.Phil. Researcher Registration Number: 119 Session: 2014-2015 DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF DHAKA, DHAKA, BANGLADESH June, 2020 Bangladesh’s Participation in UN Peacekeeping Mission: An Assessment of Its Socio-economic Implications for Participating Troops Thesis Submitted for the Degree of Master of Philosophy to University of Dhaka Dhaka, Bangladesh by MD. TANVEER ISLAM Registration Number: 119/2014-2015 DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF DHAKA, DHAKA, BANGLADESH i Dedicated to My Parents Shahida Akther Khanam Md. Amirul Islam ii Abstract This research focuses on the participation of Bangladeshi Troops in UN Peacekeeping Missions and the way that affects their socio-economic status. Bangladesh is participating in the UN Peacekeeping Mission since 1988. Since then, they actively participated in 54 UN Peacekeeping Missions and became one of the highest Troops contributing countries in UN Peacekeeping Mission in the world. This brought great honor and economic benefits for the country. The troops of Bangladesh Armed Forces contributed and sacrificed a lot to make each mission successful and to prove the potentiality of Bangladeshi Peacekeepers in the world arena. Unfortunately, no particular study was conducted on the Bangladeshi UN Peacekeepers in terms of the socio- economic implications of their participation in UN Peacekeeping Mission. However, it is essential to critically assess these socio-economic implications, which could be a guideline for the present and future peacekeepers, how they can be benefited from their participation in such missions.
