During what the present thesis calls the “crisis of Britishness” from 1964 to 1968, the British character of Canada was redefined and Britishness portrayed as something foreign or “other.” This post-British conception of Canada has been buttressed by historians depicting the British connection as a colonial hangover, an externally-derived, narrowly ethnic, nostalgic, or retardant force. However, Britishness, as a unique amalgam of hybrid identities in the Canadian context, in fact took on new and multiple meanings.

  • THE ST. LAWRENCE SEAWAY COLLECTION Mss
THE ST. LAWRENCE SEAWAY COLLECTION Mss. Coll. # 40 Approx. 30 linear ft. Background: THE SEAWAY: THE HISTORY OF AN IDEA For those of us living in the second half of the twentieth century, the term "Seaway" conjures up images of 700 foot long ocean-going vessels, and huge hydroelectric dams capable of generating millions of kilowatts of electricity. "St. Lawrence Seaway" also brings to mind the huge construction project that took place during the 1950's in the so-called International Section of the St. Lawrence River between Ogdensburg/Prescott and Massena/Cornwall. The "seaway" concept, however, goes back nearly 200 years. Consistent over time is the dream of ocean-going vessels sailing without interruption from the Atlantic Ocean into the Great Lakes. The emergence of the concept of hydroelectric generation was a much more recent idea, originating at the turn of the 20th century. What has changed over time is the size and volume of ships and the importance of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River transportation route. When the Welland Canal was built in 1829 to connect Lakes Erie and Ontario, it was 8 feet deep. When the St. Lawrence Seaway was constructed 130 years later, the minimum depth was 28 feet. The implications of these changes are readily apparent. Deeper shipping channels and larger ships require more costly and extensive construction efforts. Recent public discussions about additional and larger locks are contemporary examples of the way the "seaway" concept continues to change over time. When Champlain and Cartier sailed up the St. Lawrence River they believed they had found the Northwest Passage to the Orient.

  • THE BRANDING of the PRIME MINISTER: 'Uncle Louis' and Brand
THE BRANDING OF THE PRIME MINISTER: ‘Uncle Louis’ and Brand Politics in The Elections of Louis St. Laurent 1949-1957 A Thesis Submitted to the Committee on Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the Faculty of Arts and Science TRENT UNIVERSITY Peterborough, Ontario, Canada © Cory Baldwin, 2017 History M.A. Graduate Program September 2017 ABSTRACT: THE BRANDING OF THE PRIME MINISTER: ‘Uncle Louis’ and Brand Politics in The Elections of Louis St. Laurent 1949-1957 Cory Baldwin From 1949-1957, Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent was the face of the Liberal Party. Party branding was wholly devoted to his friendly, ‘Uncle Louis’ brand image. St. Laurent’s image was manipulated and manufactured without public preconception, establishing the modern tactics of personal branding still used by his successors. This thesis studies the elections of 1949, 1953, and 1957, analysing photos, advertisements, speeches, archival documents, memoirs, newspapers, and other sources to show the development of Liberal branding strategy. It employs political scientist Margaret Scammell’s conceptualization of brand theory, showing how marketers used emotional brand differentiators and rational substantive performance indicators to sell ‘Uncle Louis’ to Canadians. The Liberals used St. Laurent and branding tactics to win two massive majorities in 1949 and 1953, and the Diefenbaker Tories used those same tactics to defeat them in 1957. ‘Uncle Louis’ proved the effectiveness of personal branding and leader- centered

Maintaining Party Unity: Analyzing the Conservative Party of Canada’s Integration of the Progressive Conservative and Canadian Alliance parties by Matthew Thompson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2017, Matthew Thompson Federal conservative parties in Canada have long been plagued by several persistent cleavages and internal conflict. This conflict has hindered the party electorally and contributed to a splintering of right-wing votes between competing right-wing parties in the 1990s. The Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) formed from a merger of the Progressive Conservative (PC) party and the Canadian Alliance in 2003. This analysis explores how the new party was able to maintain unity and prevent the long-standing cleavages from disrupting the party. The comparative literature on party factions is utilized to guide the analysis as the new party contained faction like elements. Policy issues and personnel/patronage distribution are stressed as significant considerations by the comparative literature as well literature on the PCs internal fighting. The analysis thus focuses on how the CPC approached these areas to understand how the party maintained unity. For policy, the campaign platforms, Question Period performance and government sponsored bills of the CPC are examined followed by an analysis of their first four policy conventions. With regards to personnel and patronage, Governor in Council and Senate appointments are analyzed, followed by the new party’s candidate nomination process and Stephen Harper’s appointments to cabinet. The findings reveal a careful and concentrated effort by party leadership, particularly Harper, at managing both areas to ensure that members from each of the predecessor parties were motivated to remain in the new party.

  • How Veterans Like Major-General Dan Spry
WARTIME LESSONS, PEACETIME ACTIONS: HOW VETERANS LIKE MAJOR-GENERAL DAN SPRY INFLUENCED CANADIAN SOCIETY AFTER 1945 By Gordon Christopher Case Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the PhD degree in History Université d’Ottawa/University of Ottawa © Gordon Christopher Case, Ottawa, Canada, 2017 ABSTRACT WARTIME LESSONS, PEACETIME ACTIONS: HOW VETERANS LIKE MAJOR-GENERAL DAN SPRY INFLUENCED CANADIAN SOCIETY AFTER 1945 Gordon Christopher Case Supervisor: University of Ottawa, 2017 Professor Serge Durflinger This study examines some of the ways in which Second World War veterans helped shape Canadian society in the years after 1945 by using the life experience of one of their number, Major-General Daniel Charles Spry, as an interpretive model. Just over one million Canadian men and women re-entered civil life after their wartime military service. Representing approximately 35 per cent of Canada’s adult male population aged 25 to 49 in 1951, and found in nearly every facet of Canadian life, Second World War veterans possessed social importance that extended far beyond their experience of the Veterans Charter. Using Dan Spry’s documented thoughts and actions in war and peace, this study argues that a number of these individuals learned lessons regarding leadership, character, citizenship, and internationalism during their wartime military service and – finding them useful – applied such lessons to various aspects of their lives after the war’s end. In so doing, Second World War veterans helped to influence the character of postwar Canada’s institutions, workplaces, and the lives of many Canadians by providing societal leadership, moulding children’s character, developing future citizens, and trying to build a better world.
