Mehrere weitere Forschungsaufenthalte in Südkorea und weiteres Literaturstudium brach ten verbesserte Kenntnisse und neue Einsichten. Eigene Studien und Auftrags forschung für den DAAD ließen Arbeiten entstehen, die teilweise öffentlich nicht zugängig sind. So kam es zur Überlegung, ein weiteres Buch zur Bildung und Ausbildung in Korea vorzulegen. Ganz zufrieden bin ich mit dem Ergebnis nicht. Es ist schwierig, aus verschiede nen Texten ein in sich stimmiges Buch zur erarbeiten. Überschneidungen und Wiederholungen sind so gut es ging vermieden worden. -

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract The main focus of this study is the High German language spoken by Russian Mennonites, one of the many groups of German-speaking immigrants in Canada. Although the primary language of most Russian Mennonites is a Low German variety called Plautdietsch, High German has been widely used in Russian Mennonite communities since the end of the eighteenth century and is perceived as one of their mother tongues. The primary objectives of the study are to investigate: 1) when, with whom, and for what purposes the major languages of Russian Mennonites were used by the members of the second and third migration waves (mid 1920s and 1940-50s respectively) and how the situation has changed today; 2) if there are any differences in spoken High German between representatives of the two groups and what these differences can be attributed to; 3) to what extent the High German of the subjects corresponds to the Standard High German. Freie Universität Berlin Institute of Korean Studies Annual Report 2013 Director’s Welcome With this annual report, we give an overview of the manifold activities of the Institute of Korean Studies (IKS) at the Freie Universität Berlin. The IKS is an institution dedicated to teaching and research. Most of the energy of its staff is absorbed by the organisation and support of our undergradu- ate, graduate and doctoral students (numbering around 170 in total), as well as post-doctoral researchers and visiting fellows. However, in this report, we concentrate on research and other activities at the IKS. With respect to research, we continued with two projects that we started in 2009 and 2010, namely, ‘Circulation of Knowledge and Dynamics of Transformation’ and ‘Sharing the German Government Documents on Unification and Integration’, supported respectively by the Academy of Korean Studies in Seongnam and the Ministry of Unification in Seoul. Furthermore, two new projects were initiated in 2013. One of them is titled ‘Knowledge Transfer as Intercultural Translation’. This project, taking into account cultural and institutional differences, is intended to identify the conditions for the ‘translation’ of certain results of German unification research into the Korean context in order to establish their transferability. The other project is affiliated with the SFB 980 ‘Episteme in Motion’ and focuses on the 1 rise of private Confucian academies during the 16th and 17th centuries in Korea. This, surprisingly, led to pluralisation and at the same time orthodoxisation of knowledge. Apart from its teaching and research activities, the IKS organised nine international workshops and conferences and about 20 special lectures, including a lecture series on North Korean culture. -

The Inflow of Western Knowledge and the Process of Internalization: Comparison of The Grass Roof and Der Yalu Fliesst Lim Seon-ae The purpose of this study is to ascertain the differences between the inflow of Western knowledge and the process of its internalization as seen in The Grass Roof (Younghill Kang 1931) and Der Yalu Fliesst (Mirok Li 1946). These two works were considered leaders for a long time because they were published in English and German. The main point of this work, which is internalization and the acquirement of Western knowledge, is to show the differences among people, especially the difference between Younghill Kang’s Han Chungpa and Mirok Li’s narrator of Li Mirok. These two characters show the differences in comprehension of Western education, learning methods of Western knowledge, and the process of looking at the West. Their acts cause another kind of colonialism which is ironic and they are crit- icized as strengthening Orientalism in the West. But at the point that we over- came the obstacle of human species and languages, Younghill Kang’s and Mirok Li’s works should be acknowledged that they informed about modern Korea which disappeared by the over-use of foreign languages. They were the writers who showed that the nation was alive although their country was broken. A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (History) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) June 2016 © Eriks Eduards Bredovskis, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines how Baltic German émigrés living in the German Empire argued for the inclusion of the Baltic Provinces of the Russian Empire (Estland, Kurland, and Livland) into the Kaiserreich. At the start of the twentieth century, Baltic German intellectuals took up academic positions at universities in Germany. Embittered by their previous experience of Russification in the 1880s and then surrounded by a German nationalist academic and political environment, they produced numerous histories of Russia and the Baltic Provinces, which underscored the region’s Germanness and its perceived trajectory away from a German national teleology. World War One was a crucial moment in the development of these narratives as now there was a possibility of actually acquiring these provinces. This thesis argues that Balten narratives of eastern Europe demanded the incorporation of the Baltic Provinces into the German Empire through the construction of a specific historical narrative about Germany’s role in eastern Europe. These narratives were informed by existing German conceptions of history—particularly those propagated by Heinrich von Treitschke—and from other nineteenth-century discourses of empire—in particular the domestication of “wild” spaces and the “civilizing mission.” Their narratives can be understood as a form of “the civilizing mission,” which mobilized the concept of Kulturboden—the understanding that specific spaces (soils) had become Germanized over time. -

Molotschna Colony - Bicentennial 1804-2004

Preservings $20.00 No. 24, December, 2004 “A people who have not the pride to record their own history will not long have the virtues to make their history worth recording; and no people who are indifferent to their past need hope to make their future great.” — Jan Gleysteen Molotschna Colony - Bicentennial 1804-2004 The Molotschna Colony was founded by 193 Danziger Old Flem- ish Mennonite families from the Vistula delta in Polish-Prussia, who arrived at the Chortitza (Old) Colony on the Dnieper River in Fall of 1803. In the Spring of 1804 the first nine villages were laid out along the banks of the Molotschna River some 100 km. to the southeast. Another 165 families came that same Fall with eight new villages laid out in 1805. Much like the 19th century settlers of the American-midwest, the Molotschna pioneers traversed the 1000 miles of primitive roads and trails in covered wagon trains carry- ing their possessions and herding livestock. The journey took an aver- age of five to seven weeks. The Molotschna Colony consisted of 120,000 desjatien (320,000 acres) of land lying to the east of the Molotschna River which flowed from The former Mädchen Schule or Mennonite girls’ school in Halbstadt, Molotschna, was built in 1909. In 1910 it was north to south into the Sea of Azov. “A upgraded to a full secondary school for girls with five grades. In 2000 the building was acquired by “Friends of the number of shallow streams crossed Mennonite Centre, Ukraine” and remodelled as a centre for the distribution of humanitarian aid, medical services, the colony, the larger ones flowing adult and childrens’ education and religious training. -
