Drang nach Osten? Ostkolonisation? Landesausbau? Die mittelalterliche Geschichte3 deutsche Ostsiedlung Drang nach Osten? Ostkolonisation? Landesausbau? GERMAN IMMIGRANTS, AFRICAN AMERICANS, and the RECONSTRUCTION of CITIZENSHIP, 1865-1877 DISSERTATION Presented In
NEW CITIZENS: GERMAN IMMIGRANTS, AFRICAN AMERICANS, AND THE RECONSTRUCTION OF CITIZENSHIP, 1865-1877 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Alison Clark Efford, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2008 Doctoral Examination Committee: Professor John L. Brooke, Adviser Approved by Professor Mitchell Snay ____________________________ Adviser Professor Michael L. Benedict Department of History Graduate Program Professor Kevin Boyle ABSTRACT This work explores how German immigrants influenced the reshaping of American citizenship following the Civil War and emancipation. It takes a new approach to old questions: How did African American men achieve citizenship rights under the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments? Why were those rights only inconsistently protected for over a century? German Americans had a distinctive effect on the outcome of Reconstruction because they contributed a significant number of votes to the ruling Republican Party, they remained sensitive to European events, and most of all, they were acutely conscious of their own status as new American citizens. Drawing on the rich yet largely untapped supply of German-language periodicals and correspondence in Missouri, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., I recover the debate over citizenship within the German-American public sphere and evaluate its national ramifications. Partisan, religious, and class differences colored how immigrants approached African American rights. Yet for all the divisions among German Americans, their collective response to the Revolutions of 1848 and the Franco-Prussian War and German unification in 1870 and 1871 left its mark on the opportunities and disappointments of Reconstruction. -

UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND PRESS ST. LUCIA The War Aims of Imperial Germany: Professor Fritz Fischer and his Critics by JOHN A. MOSES Price: $1.40 University of Queensland Papers Departments of Government and History Volume I Number 4 UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND PRESS St. Lucia 24 September 1968 WHOLLY SET UP AND PRINTED IN AUSTRALIA BY WATSON FERGUSON AND COMPANY, BRISBANE, QUEENSLAND 1968 REGISTERED IN AUSTRALIA FOR TRANSMISSION BY POST AS A BOOK FOREWORD The author's aim in presenting this monograph on the war aims of Imperial Germany is twofold : in the firstplace it is vitally necessary for Australian students to be informed of new developments in all branches of scholarly research performed overseas otherwise our standards will lag behind those of Europe and North America. As a student in German universities from 1961 to 1965 the author was able to witness the current war-guilt debate at first hand and was impressed by the fact that even in such a heavily worked over topic as the First World War, dramatic new evidence was still being unearthed. The second reason for this monograph on the debate is to point up its significance for the historical discipline in general. It shows that "facts" can be interpreted in many different lights and that as Oscar Wilde once pointed out the truth is rarely pure and never simple. In other words the debate shows that it is unwise to be dogmatic about anything in history if only because there is rarely a situation where all the relevant facts are available. And finally, the debate, since it is being carried on largely by German historians, represents a case study as to how false and incomplete images of the past can dominate people's beliefs, attitudes and behaviour, especially in political matters. -

Bucholtz A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HISTORY CALGARY, ALBERTA SEPTEMBER, 2015 © Matthew Bucholtz 2015 Abstract November 1918 did not bring peace to Germany. Although the First World War was over, Germany began a new and violent chapter as an outbreak of civil war threatened to tear the country apart. The birth of the Weimar Republic, Germany’s first democratic government, did not begin smoothly as republican institutions failed to re-establish centralized political and military authority in the wake of the collapse of the imperial regime. Coupled with painful aftershocks from defeat in the Great War, the immediate postwar era had only one consistent force shaping and guiding political and cultural life: violence. -

Pendas This dissertation examines the relationship between Black America and East Germany from 1949 to 1989, exploring the ways in which two unlikely partners used international solidarity to achieve goals of domestic importance. Despite the growing number of works addressing the black experience in and with Imperial Germany, Nazi Germany, West Germany, and contemporary Germany, few studies have devoted attention to the black experience in and with East Germany. In this work, the outline of this transatlantic relationship is defined, detailing who was involved in the friendship, why they were involved, and what they hoped to gain from this alliance. -

Univ.-Prof.in Dr.in Elisabeth Dietrich-Daum eingereicht im Semester: SS 2014 Rubrik: BA-Arbeit Abstract „Walliser off Gultüre.“ The Walser migration movement and Galtür This bachelor thesis focusses on the history of the Walser migration in general and the settlement of Galtür in particular, looking at the reasons why the Walser people left their homeland and at the conditions of establishing new settlements. In addition, this paper tries to find out whether traces of the Walser people and their culture still exist, particularly with reference to Galtür. Does a commemorative culture in the centres of the Walser migration and settlement exist in today’s Galtür? Do people there identify themselves as Walsers? A.J.P. Taylor:The Course of German History
The Course of German History A.J.P. Taylor July 27-30, 2015 Taylor does not suffer from as much as he enjoys Germophobia. The book was written just after the end of the War which he sees as the logical conclusion of German destiny. This rather tendentious survey makes for good reading and entertainment, the author generously drops his sarcasms as so many high-explosives and spreads his ’bon mots’ around as artillery fire. The nation of Germany is probably older than the nation of either England and France, due to the formation of the Holy Roman Empire. It can be traced back to Charlemagne, and was of course a feudal contraption of vassals under the nominal authority of the Emperor. The high point of Germany was during the Middle-Ages, according to Taylor. A time of prosperity and local self-government and a proud tradition of independent towns and cities. And also the high-point of the Hanseatic League monopolizing trade on the Baltic. But early on there were two Germanies, the author reminds the reader. The Germany of the West, and the Germany of the East. It is the former with which most westerners are familiar, it is the civilized country of culture and achievement, while the Germany of the East, whom the Slavs would encounter to their peril, was an expansive and brutal power intent on expansion and subjugation, relentlessly and inexorably driving the Slavs eastwards. This ’Drang nach Osten’ is hence something that Taylor identifies as a defining character of the German fate. Luther was a catastrophe for Germany, Taylor claims.
