Caitlin Cahill In 2011, the Christopher Newport field hockey team advanced to the NCAA tour- nament for the sixth straight season. During the year, the Captains posted a 12-6 record on the way to another successful cam- paign. Along the way, the squad capitalized on outstanding individual efforts along with excellent teamwork while solidifying its spot on the national stage.

During the year, the Captains had several unbelievable efforts, highlighted by a 6-0 victory over #20 Johns Hopkins on Septem- ber 25. That marked one of the team’s six shutouts during the season as the squad also blanked Centre, Wesley, Virginia Wes- leyan, Frostburg State, and Houghton.

CNU’s victory over the Blue Jays was also one of eight games during the year in which In a 10-0 victory over Frostburg State on the Captains recorded at least five goals. Incredibly, a new program record. Marlene Lichty became the 13th player to join that club after driving home three goals while also adding an assist during a 7-0 vic- tory over Houghton on November 4.

Following an incredible run during the reg- ular season, the Captains faced off with 11th-ranked Ursinus in the NCAA Tourna- ment. Kelsey Rigby got CNU off to an in- credible start after scoring less than four minutes into regulation. Unfortunately, the squad could not quite hold on to its early advantage as the Bears posted three unan- swered scores to cap off a 3-1 victory and put an end to Christopher Newport’s 2011 campaign.

On an individual level, Caitlin Cahill and Bri- anna Milne both earned a spot on the NFH- CA All-American team. With those selec- tions, the Captains put two players on the

Cahill earned the honor after leading the squad with 35 points, which ranked as the fifth-highest single-season total in program history. Milne was solid on both ends of the field, collecting five points and a team-high three defensive saves.

Of course, the All-Americans were not the only award-winners. Marlene Lichty gar- nered a spot on the second-team All-Re- gion squad for her performance during the year, while Jamie Dowling and Shelby Jud- kins earned a place on the All-State team. 20 CNU FIELD HOCKEY 2012 2011 STATISTICS CNU AT THE OLYMPICS

“The most inspiring moment I witnessed was the playing of the national anthem before the match. Being able to represent your country on an international level must have been monumental for the athletes, as it was inspir- ing and pride-inducing for every person in the stands.”

- CNU Junior Meghan Sullivan

The Captains’ trip and enthusiastic cheering at the Olympic Games earned national recognition, including a story on USA Field Hockey’s website and some television time during Team USA’s bout with Australia.

“I cannot believe we fit so much in 10 days, but we did. I was satisfied with the trip after the first three days, and that was only Scotland! Each part of our trip was so unique, nothing can replicate it. These girls are just an amazing group to be around, and I am so blessed to have shared this trip with them.”

- CNU Sophomore Allie Hackbarth

The Captains took in many sights during their European adven- ture, including a stop at Loch Lomond, which is the largest lake in the United Kingdom.

“I can say it was awesome, amazing, an experience of a lifetime, but until you hold that ticket in your hand, marking your seat among the thousands in the erupting stadium, London and the Olympics are a lasting dream that can only be fulfilled in person.”

- CNU Graduate Lauren Cherry

CNU competed in three games against local club teams, includ- ing a match against the Kelburne Ladies on July 29. Eventually, the Captains picked up a victory in their opener, 5-2.

“We were grateful to see both games, but especially proud to support the U.S. women’s team. We were out-numbered by Aussie fans, but that didn’t stop us from starting a wave, and none of us had voices from screaming the whole entire game.”

- CNU Junior Sarah Smith

The Captains made their Olympic debut on August 2, taking in contests between Korea and Japan, and later, Team USA and Australia.
