STAFFORD MIDDLE SCHOOL 101 Spartan Drive, Stafford, VA 22554 ● Phone: 540-658-6210 ● Fax: 540-658-6204 6th Grade English... ow! It’s hard to believe it is the end of September. Time is flying by! Our sixth grade students have been doing a wonderful job adjusting to middle school. From lockers to block scheduling, W students are falling into a routine and are truly Spectacular Spar- tans!

In English, students have been busy. We have finished our unit on genres and are moving on to learning about plot elements. We have been studying the parts of the plot diagram and applying this information to new pieces of literature. Writing continues to be a focus as we perfect our knowledge of sentence and paragraph development. Greek and Latin af- fixes have also been threaded into the curriculum. Finally, students have had the opportunity to visit the book fair in the library and have checked out books for pleasure reading.

Tennis Tennis COUNSELING NEWS FOR OCTOBER!

Mrs. Carey (7th Grade & 6th Grade A-K):

Hi Spartan families! October is here! We have done our first guidance lessons. In 7th grade, we learned all about using our BRAIN to solve our problems. We looked at what the Benefits were to that solution, what the Risks were, were there any Alternatives? What was does our Intuition say? What would happen if we did Nothing? Using prob- lem solving skills is a huge part of growing up. Learning how to prob- lem solve will help our students become better Spartans and better citizens. In October we will be focusing on Anti-Bullying. We will have our annual Unity day on October 20 where we will encourage our students to wear orange. I look forward to seeing everyone at Back to School Night on October 6th. If you have any questions or con- cerns, please don't hesitate to contact me!

Ms. Stafford (8th Grade & 6th Grade L-Z): OCT 20, 2016

Happy October SMS families!! I can’t believe we are into our second month of school already! Mrs. Carey and I have already had a chance to visit each classroom for our introduction lessons. In these lessons, we went over what a middle school counselor does as well as how they can utilize the Counseling Center. During our first lesson, we focused on becoming problem solving experts! Our 6th and 8th grad- ers learned how to implement S.O.D.A.S. into their everyday lives. When faced with a problem, students can stop and think to figure out theS ituation, Options,D isadvantages, Advantages, and Solution. When our Spartans en- counter obstacles, we encourage them to use S.O.D.A.S. to problem solve. I challenge you to use it at home!

Small Group Counseling:

School counselors conduct planned small groups outside the classroom to respond to students’ identified needs, interests, or for students expressing difficulties dealing with relationships, personal concerns, and normal develop- mental tasks. Students can be recommended for groups by parents, teachers, or themselves. As school counselors, we prefer that all students who participate in group counseling have parental permission. A list of proposed groups being held is listed below. Please contact your child’s school counselor to sign up or for more information. (Mrs. Carey – [email protected] & Ms. Stafford– [email protected])

 Changing Families – Coping with changes in families such as divorce, incarceration, new sibling, deployment, and loss. Groups will be formed by specific need.  Organization/Study Skills– Staying on track in middle school by keeping up with our lockers, agen- da, binders, and more!  Self-Esteem – Building confidence and communication skills.  Keep Your Cool – Anger management skills.

8th Grade Parents: 8th grade students will take the PSAT on Wednesday, October 19th. If you have any questions/ concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the Counseling Center @ (540)658-6206. Signature Program Night will be Wednesday, October 26th at Brooke Point High School from 6- 9 PM. I encourage all 8th grade families to learn all about the wonderful programs and opportu- nities our county offers to high school students. 6th & 7th grade families are encouraged to attend as well. It’s never too early to think about our futures!

his year, our school will be once again participating in the Box Tops for Educa- Ttion™ program. The members of the SMS National Junior Honor Society are thrilled to be the Box Tops Coordinators for Stafford Middle. Clipping box tops is an easy way to help our school buy what it needs. Box Tops are worth 10¢ and they quickly add up to real cash for our school. This school year, our school’s earnings goal is $1000.

To help our school, just look for pink Box Tops on products, clip them, and send them to school. There will be collection sites in the front office and in each homeroom. For more information on the Box Tops for Education™ program, including a list of participating products and our school’s pro- gress, visit www.BTFE.com. Be sure to become a member to receive exclusive coupons and recipes and learn about extra ways for our school to earn.
