HAMPTON ROADS SANITATION DISTRICT

I. FILE GUIDE REFERENCE

A. Division : Facility Support - Shop B. Position Title : Machinist, Grade 5d - 5 C. Immediate Supervisor : Machinist Foreman D. Location : Machine Shop

II. POSITION SUMMARY

Performs primarily conventional machine shop work at the journeyman level; position requires self- motivation and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment to support departments throughout HRSD.

III. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Promotes the mission, vision and values of HRSD with a focus on team building and Quality Improvement. Performs repair, rebuilding, fabrication and/or finishing of replacement parts for large mechanical equipment including pumps, valves, shafts, sleeves, bushings, rollers and other special items. Operates machine shop and equipment including and ; operates metal fabricating equipment including cutting torches; welders and blasters; fabricates and/or refinishes replacement parts using machine drawings or spare parts as guidelines. Maintains records and shop drawings as required; provides communication with Machine Shop and other HRSD personnel; keeps supervisors informed of work progress and problems; Performs machine clean-up/maintenance and general shop clean-up duties as directed by Machine Shop Supervisor.

IV. QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

1.

Entry Level: High school diploma or GED, supplemented by courses in the mechanical trade; Fully Qualified: HS diploma or GED and completion of the classroom portion of HRSD's apprenticeship program for the Machinist trade, or equivalent as reviewed and approved by HRSD’s Apprenticeship Committee.

2. Experience

Entry level: Considerable experience in mechanical maintenance work, including mechanical repair installations. Fully qualified: Completion of the on-the-job training portion of HRSD’s apprenticeship program for the Machinist trade, or equivalent as reviewed and approved by HRSD’s Apprenticeship Committee.

3. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of machine shop tools and equipment including press, horizontal and vertical lathes, milling machine, and key cutting machine. Basic knowledge of CNC machinery desired. Knowledge of machine shop procedures and practices. Knowledge of burning, cutting, welding and blasting of metals, machine drawings, and the ability to perform close tolerance machine work. The ability to plan and carry out machine shop projects, learn new tasks, communicate effectively in verbal form, and work in a team atmosphere with all HRSD staff. 4. Special Licenses

Must possess and maintain valid Operator's License (from state of residence). Must possess and maintain valid Machinist Journeyman License.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to drive vehicle and inspect projects. Must be able to work overtime and/or unusual hours as necessary. Must be accessible at telephone.

Must be able to work in machine shop environment exposed to heat, dust and noise. Must be able to work in and around wastewater interceptor and treatment facilities exposed to wastewater and hazardous materials.

VI. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The work involves 20-50% of walking, climbing, standing, or bending. Works, at times, in an OSHA designated noise environment (over 85 decibels). Work requires ability to lift heavy loads (over 75 pounds).

VII. OTHER

Medical certification of physical requirements may be required.

VII. TRAINING LEVELS

Personnel in this category are fully qualified at a Grade 5, with four years experience and completion of HRSD's apprenticeship program or equivalent program as determined by the Apprenticeship Committee. The following training levels have been established for personnel who are not fully qualified.

Grade 5a - Completion of the 3rd year of apprenticeship. Grade 5b - Completion of the 2nd year of apprenticeship. Grade 5c - Completion of the 1st year of apprenticeship. Grade 5d - Basic entry-level requirements.

If Assigned To A Training Level, The Fully Qualified Level Must Be Consistently Pursued As A Condition of Appointment. Failure To Do So Will Result In Removal from the Position and Potentially Employment with HRSD.
