SHOP ACCESS PROCEDURES

The mechanical machine shop is located in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering. The shop is run by the department of mechanical engineering and provides a full service , design, and technical services for the entire engineering college. The machine shop also provides services for other colleges located on the RIT campus along with supporting any machining and repair needs for the FMS maintenance technicians. Currently the shop provides services at no charge but, requestors are expected to provide payment for any purchased materials, tooling, and services required to complete the project.

Please review the following procedures and processes for accessing the ME shop services:

• Hours of operation: The shop is open and staffed Monday thru Friday from 8:00AM to 9:00PM. • Completion of MECE 104 Machine Shop Lab or Introduction to Machine Shop Training class is required to operate and use equipment located in shop. • All users are required to use shop computers to login before using equipment. • and equipment must be signed out on computers when leaving the machine shop area. • The machine shop is currently not charging for machining services but, customers are expected to provide payment for purchased materials needed to complete a project. • Any machining jobs are required to have a detailed set of prints or electronic CAD file. • Customers are also expected to fill out and submit a job processing form including project name and contact information. Forms can be picked up in the machine shop area. • Safety glasses, proper clothing, and safe operation of equipment are required in all shop areas. Per shop safety guidelines document. • All users are expected to clean and return all and equipment before leaving shop area.

1. MSD, classroom, and other mechanical engineering student class room projects 2. Mechanical Engineering research faculty 3. ME department faculty, staff, and other department projects 4. Other Kate Gleason College of engineering student, faculty, and staff projects 5. KGCOE clubs 6. FMS facility maintenance 7. Other colleges located on the RIT campus

MACHINE SHOP ACCESS TRAINING FOR KGCOE STUDENTS AND FACULTY

• The Machine Shop Certification Training class will teach students basic machining fundamentals needed to manufacture machined parts in a more concentrated training format. After completing the course, students will be certified to safely use and operate manual machines and other shop equipment located in the Department of Mechanical Engineering machine shop. Course topics will include measurement tools, cutting raw stock, , machines, and press. • The training class is tailored to meet the machining requirements of graduate, PhD, and transfer students working for research faculty in the KGCOE. • Classes are usually offered at the start of each fall, spring, and summer semester.

Student Eligibility

• Students currently working for KGCOE faculty that need access to the ME Machine shop equipment. • KGCOE Faculty can also attend depending on class enrollment. • Other students may be considered depending on class enrollment. They will be handled on a case by case basis.
