Activities Report on the Mitsubishi Corporation East Earthquake Recovery Fund

Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) has established the "Mitsubishi Corporation East Japan Earthquake Recovery Fund" and plans to make a total contribution of 10 billion yen over a four-year period. Through this fund, MC is prepared to provide long-term and comprehensive support to the afflicted regions (please refer to the announcement, “Establishment of the East Japan Earthquake Recovery Fund,” released on April 12, 2011). The continuous support being provided by MC includes “Emergency Scholarships” and “Recovery Support Grants,” as well as other support activities such as “Donations, Other Aid and Contributions” and “Volunteer Activities” where employee volunteers assist in the relief efforts.

The following is a report of our activities up to the end of October 2011.

[Volunteer Activities] As part of the fund, MC has been continuously carrying out volunteer work in the afflicted regions. Employee volunteers, including employees from MC group companies, work in teams of 10 to 20 on a rotational basis, typically for a period of four days and three nights. In cooperation with local volunteer centers, each team takes part in various recovery efforts such as removing mud and sand from inside houses, farm fields and greenhouses, as well as clearing debris and wreckage. Up until June, our activities were mainly conducted in Sendai. In response to requests by the local governments, we expanded our activities to Ishinomaki in June and Minami Sanriku in October. As of the end of October, a total of 1,050 employees have participated through the continued volunteer activities performed every day. These activities, which are constantly being adapted to the needs of the afflicted regions, have continued into December, and we expect that approximately 1,200 employees will participate over a one-year period.

[Friendship Camps] MC collaborated with YMCA of Japan to jointly hold "Friendship Camps" for children and their families who were affected by the disaster. The Friendship Camps had been originally conducted by the national and local branches of the YMCA. So far, 94 camps have been held in 21 prefectures nationwide, with a total of 891 participants. As part of our efforts to contribute to the recovery of the region, MC employees participate in these camps as volunteers whose role is to liven up the camp atmosphere. The goal is to provide the people affected by the disaster with the opportunity for physical and mental relief.

[Emergency Scholarships] The "Emergency Scholarships" are one aspect of the recovery fund. The scholarships are a monthly payment of 100,000 yen for undergraduate or graduate students facing difficulties in continuing their studies due to the disaster. This program will continue for four years. By the end of fiscal year 2011, the scholarship will have been paid to 633 students attending 170 universities in 28 prefectures nationwide.

[Recovery Support Grants] “Recovery Support Grants” have also been established to support the activities of organizations such as NPOs, NGOs, and social welfare corporations that are participating in restoration and recovery activities in the regions hit by the disaster. This fiscal year, a total of 450 million yen has been paid to 185 organizations. These funds have been utilized for a wide range of activities including the enrichment of emotional care and educational environments for children who were affected by the disaster, assistance for the elderly and care-dependent people, local festivals, and environmental surveys associated with nuclear accidents. The “Recovery Support Grants” will continue for four years.

[Donations , Other Aid and Contributions] MC also supports various activities to aid industrial recovery in the disaster-hit regions and to raise the quality of living of those affected by the disaster, including monetary donations and other recovery assistance for the afflicted prefectures.

○MC provides free loan of 34 electric vehicles (i-MiEV) MC has provided the afflicted prefectures with a free loan of 34 i-MiEV electric vehicles. Utilizing the merits of the i-MiEV, such as their short turning radius and lack of dependence on gasoline fueling, the vehicles are used on such occasions as damage inspections of the afflicted areas and as a means of transportation for residents of temporary housing.

○MC donates a “mobile hair salon” that tours the afflicted regions MC received a number of requests from residents of evacuation shelters and temporary housing communities who had difficulty in accessing hair care services. In response, MC donated a mobile hair salon to the Sendai Biyou Kyokai, an association of beauty salons in . The salon began touring the prefecture, mainly visiting the temporary housing communities.

○MC provides free loans of offshore fueling facilities To assist the fishing industry, which suffered enormous damage from the disaster, MC has provided a free loan in the form of three offshore ship-to-ship fueling barges to the JF Zengyoren (National Federation of Fisheries Cooperative Associations). The offshore floating barges loaned in July are called "magocoro (a true heart) stations,” one of which one is moored at Kesennuma Fishing Port while two others are at Ofunato Port. They will be used in fueling activities over a period of 2 years.

○Supporting local festivals In Miyagi Prefecture, as many of the local companies suffered damage from the disaster, it has been difficult to secure the funds and personnel necessary to hold local festivals. One of the ways MC is helping the recovery efforts of afflicted communities is to donate funds to the Corporation of Miyagi Prefecture Tourism Federation (chaired by Mr. Yoshihiro Murai, of Miyagi Prefecture). These funds were allocated by the prefecture and the federation to pay for the expenses of events held during July through March of next year, including local festivals, tourist events and other recovery events.

○Donation of refrigeration facilities to assist the rapid recovery of fishing industry MC supports the “Kibo no Noroshi (Signal of Hope) Project,” in which 20 private businesses collaborate to donate refrigeration facilities and forklifts to the afflicted regions to assist in the rapid recovery of the fishing industry in the Tohoku coastal area. Through the project, 10 refrigerated containers were donated to Onagawa, Miyagi Prefecture, in June, and 9 were donated to Ishinomaki in July. The project has also provided support to over 10 fishing ports in the three prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima. MC will assist in the rapid recovery at every Tohoku fishing port by donating about 120 refrigeration containers and other equipment through the “Signal of Hope Fund,” which was established to implement the project.
