The aftermath of the March 11th disasters shows that Japan’s strengths lie outside Tokyo, in its regions Jun 9th 2011 | MINAMISANRIKU AND TOKYO | from the print edition Like 944 24 THE earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident that struck Japan three months ago have revealed something important about the country: a seam of strength and composure in the bedrock of society that has surprised even the Japanese themselves. Not only has this resilience helped the hundreds of thousands suffering from the loss of families, homes and livelihoods to cope with their suffering, despite the self-absorbed dithering of their national politicians in Tokyo. By reminding Japan of the hidden depths of its local communities, especially compared with the shallowness of central government, it has also provided a sense of how Japan could emerge stronger from the crisis, ending years of economic drift. One of the most heroic examples of community spirit was 24-year-old Miki Endo, who used the loudspeaker system in Minamisanriku, a fishing port close to the focus of the 9.0 earthquake, to urge residents to do what they could to escape the incoming tsunami. She drowned at her post. Television footage shows the rising sea approaching, with her haunting voice echoing over the waves. More than 1,000 of the town’s 18,000 residents died.

November 17, 2013 Chairs’ Summary of the first Asia Parks Congress Kazuaki Hoshino Yoshitaka Kumagai The first Asia Parks Congress (APC) was held in Sendai, Miyagi from 13 to 17 November 2013 under the auspices of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOE-J). The meeting was attended by approximately 800 participants from central and local governments, international organizations, NGOs, academia and students of 40 countries and regions across the World, including protected area authority officials from 22 Asian countries. The participants of the first APC shared their rich experiences including current status, challenges and best practices of protected area management in Asia with the aim to facilitate the establishment of a regional partnership for achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and implementing the Programme of Work on Protected Areas of the Convention on Biological Diversity, thereby sending a message from Asia towards the World Parks Congress to be held in November, 2014 (WPC 2014). At the opening ceremony, remarks were made by Mr. Nobuteru Ishihara (Minister of the Environment, Japan), Mr. Zhang Xinsheng (President of IUCN), Mr. Yoshihiro Murai (Governor of Miyagi Prefecture), Ms. Emiko Okuyama (Mayor of Sendai City), and Ms Sally Barnes (Chief Executive, Office of Environment & Heritage, New South Wales, Australia), followed by Keynote Speeches by Ms. Junko Tabei (Japanese Alpinist), Dr. Kazuhiko Takeuchi ( Senior Vice-Rector of the United Nations University, Chair of the Central Environmental Counsel of Japan and Professor at the University of Tokyo), and Dr. Ernesto Enkerlin-Hoeflich (Chair, IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) and Professor, Montrrey Tech).

Donates a Total of About 170 Million Yen to Support Children in Areas Afflicted by the Great East Japan Earthquake Making donations through the Aeon Happy Yellow Receipt Campaign, Aeon Doyuten-kai, and the WAON for Tohoku Restoration card Aeon will donate a total of about 170 million yen to Fukushima, Iwate and Miyagi Prefectures. Specifically, the donations, including those from customers and Aeon Doyuten-kai (association of tenant stores at Aeon facilities) will be sent to the funds established by the three prefectures to support the lives and education of local children. In March 2012, one year after the occurrence of the disaster, Aeon announced its commitment to supporting the recovery of afflicted areas under the banner, “Making our wishes for recovery from the 3.11 disaster come true.” Since then the company has been conducting tree planting and volunteer activities in the affected areas while commercializing the products made in those areas. Aeon will continue to implement a range of measures to support the recovery of the afflicted areas in a concrete manner for their bright future. Activities Report on the Mitsubishi Corporation East Japan Earthquake Recovery Fund
Activities Report on the Mitsubishi Corporation East Japan Earthquake Recovery Fund Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) has established the "Mitsubishi Corporation East Japan Earthquake Recovery Fund" and plans to make a total contribution of 10 billion yen over a four-year period. Through this fund, MC is prepared to provide long-term and comprehensive support to the afflicted regions (please refer to the announcement, “Establishment of the East Japan Earthquake Recovery Fund,” released on April 12, 2011). The continuous support being provided by MC includes “Emergency Scholarships” and “Recovery Support Grants,” as well as other support activities such as “Donations, Other Aid and Contributions” and “Volunteer Activities” where employee volunteers assist in the relief efforts. The following is a report of our activities up to the end of October 2011. [Volunteer Activities] As part of the fund, MC has been continuously carrying out volunteer work in the afflicted regions. Employee volunteers, including employees from MC group companies, work in teams of 10 to 20 on a rotational basis, typically for a period of four days and three nights. In cooperation with local volunteer centers, each team takes part in various recovery efforts such as removing mud and sand from inside houses, farm fields and greenhouses, as well as clearing debris and wreckage. Up until June, our activities were mainly conducted in Sendai. In response to requests by the local governments, we expanded our activities to Ishinomaki in June and Minami Sanriku in October. As of the end of October, a total of 1,050 employees have participated through the continued volunteer activities performed every day.
