Abstract The purpose of this project is to examine the role of rituals in the Mau Mau struggle for Kenya’s independence. Traditionally, research on the Mau Mau has focused on the political and socio-economic aspects of Kenya’s anti-colonial struggle. As a result, the place of spirituality and, in particular, the role of rituals in the Mau Mau struggle has largely been ignored in existing literature. Initially, when KLFA rituals were studied at the height of the Mau Mau struggle, the task was undertaken by colonial anthropologists and psychologists who were often unable to escape the snare of racist and Eurocentric prejudices in their analyses. Subsequent revisionist studies have attempted to be more objective in their analyses, but the focus has mainly been on the elements and details surrounding the actual ceremonies, at the expense of how these rituals impacted individual freedom fighters.

    65 DIVINE CALL AND HUMAN RESPONSE Prayer in the religious traditions of Africa, I lIT IS DIFFICULT to generalize about the ethnic religions of Africa, for 31. the continent is vast and the traditions are diverse. Even the concept of 'tribe' or 'ethnic group' is a fluid one. Within the frameworks provided by different physical environments, and subject to a limited historical inter- action, african peoples have interrogated human existence, have become aware of the divine reality that discloses itself in experience, and have developed their own symbolic universe or 'grammar of faithS. Religion permeated every aspect of life in traditional Africa, but even where historic events; places and personalities appear to play a conspicuous role in religious belief and practice, the religion of traditional Africa has not been primarily an interpretation of history. More basic is the interaction of a human society with a given physical environment. Nature is overwhelming and offers a ready theological dictionary for the expression of religious experience. Not that the ethnic religions of Africa are 'nature religions'. The African does not worship natural pheomena as such, but nature offers him many parables for the mystery of human existence, and he sees that human existence as somehow continuous with the world of nature. As the caribbean poet, Aim6 C6saire, has put it: 'Man is flesh of the flesh of the world'. The physical environment is somehow an extension of the human body and the rhythms of human life have their counterparts in the seasons and cycles of nature. Prayer is a dimension of life in Africa, the disposition of one who believes himself to be in communion with divine reality, and it is expressed typically in symbolic action, dance and+ritual.

    CURSES AND CURSING AMONG THE AGĨKŨYŨ: SOCIO-CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS BENEFITS By P.N. Wachege, Dept. of Philosophy and Religious Studies, University of Nairobi This article examines the concept “curses” and the practice of “cursing” among the Agĩkũyũ of Kenya and draws out the emerging insights and interpretations indicating their socio-cultural and religious benefits. The enigmatic phenomenon is that there is a real phobia for “curses” and “cursing” and yet these practices are still conserved as invaluable elements in the African people’s concrete historical life. Whatever discipline one may belongs to and the faith affiliation one adheres to, one finds oneself posing questions- and in some cases questioning the questions- as follows: What is a curse and what is cursing? Is fear of curses grounded on any rational belief? Who is entitled to proclaim curses? What is the main objective in cursing? Who are the recipients and why? Can any good emerge from curses and cursing? Why does a curse scare some and spare others, terrify some and horrify others? What good or evil does it render to the recipient? Are curses monolithic or are they multifaceted? What are their implications in the socio-cultural and religious realms? These and others of similar nature are the concerns of this Article with a specific focus on the Agĩkũyũ community. Introductory Reflections In many African communities, the fear of curses and cursing is real. A curse is a disturbing anguish in life and living. It does not matter whether one is a leader; educated or uneducated; restless youth or an elder; medicine man or a soothsayer; sorcerer or witch; polygamist or monogamist; celibate churchmen and women, or laity; man endowed with virility and fecundity; or woman blessed with femininity cum fruitfulness; pauper or billionaire; a peace maker or a peace breaker.

The research explores in depth the Gikuyu religio-philosophical world-view as an advent to preparing the ground for understanding why the sacred Mugumo played a paramount role in the life of the Gikuyu people. In the study of the sacred Mugumo the thesis examines a three-tier relationship relevant and integral to understanding Gikuyu cosmology: Ngai (God) as the Mumbi (the creator) together with the Ngoma (ancestors); the Gikuyu people, and finally with nature.

    Human Spirituality and Coming Together in Peace, Looking Through Two Lenses (Māori and Sahaj Marg Raja Yoga). by Janine Joyce A thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand November 2014 ii Abstract This project explored the experiences of ordinary men and women involved in spiritual practices in order to understand the phenomenon of spiritual heart and any implications for outer peace. The primary question asked of informants was what was spiritual brotherhood? Very early in the process the research question refined itself to ask about spiritual brothersisterhood, as the connotation of brotherhood was excluding for the female informants. In order to understand both the question and perhaps the phenomenon; participants from two communities became involved. Both communities were viewed as having expert knowledge about indigenous spirituality. One group came from a purposive sample of practitioners from the multi-cultural global Sahaj Marg community of Raja Yoga practitioners. The other group belonged to the Aotearoa New Zealand Māori community and had close whānau (family), kinship and iwi (tribal) connections. An indigenous perspective reminds us all of our roots, when we, in our present day lives, often forget these. The willingness of this group to guide this project and be involved was very welcome. Informants in this study identified a universal thread of awareness that revealed itself to each one as a practical knowledge of the spiritual heart. Informants in both groups experienced an ongoing transcendental connection through the spiritual heart, to a unified field of consciousness that they called respectively: Master, tūpuna (ancestors), and atua (forces that generate and animate particular realms of reality).
