The International Geophysical Year (1957–8) transformed research on the aurora, one of nature’s most elusive and intensely beautiful phenomena. Aurorae became the center of interest for the big science of powerful rockets, complex satellites and large group efforts to understand the magnetic and charged particle environment of the earth. The auroral visoplot displayed here provided guidance for recording observations in a standardized form, translating the sublime aesthetics of pictorial depictions of aurorae into the mechanical aesthetics of numbers and symbols. Most of the portait photographs were taken by Skúli Sigurdsson RESEARCH REPORT 2010—2012 MAX-PLANCK-INSTITUT FÜR WISSENSCHAFTSGESCHICHTE Max Planck Institute for the History of Science Introduction The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) is made up of three Departments, each administered by a Director, and several Independent Research Groups, each led for five years by an outstanding junior scholar. Since its foundation in 1994 the MPIWG has investigated fundamental questions of the history of knowl- edge from the Neolithic to the present. The focus has been on the history of the natu- ral sciences, but recent projects have also integrated the history of technology and the history of the human sciences into a more panoramic view of the history of knowl- edge. Of central interest is the emergence of basic categories of scientific thinking and practice as well as their transformation over time: examples include experiment, ob- servation, normalcy, space, evidence, biodiversity or force. -

Introduction When Carnap wrote a short intellectual autobiography for Marcel Boll in March 1933, he mentioned two things about Prague: (1) that he became a professor at the German University in 1931, and (2) that he worked on his Logische Syntax der Sprache until 1933.2 These things are well known. Carnap spent, however, five long years in Prague, just like he did before in Vienna: so, one might ask, whether (1) and (2) indeed sufficiently characterize his Prague- period. Philipp Frank (1949, 45), who was there for almost twenty years when Carnap arrived, wrote that “[f]rom 1931 on we [i.e. Frank and Carnap] had in this way a new center of ‘scientific world conception’ at the University of Prague.” This seems to be much more than what Carnap claimed. Actually Carnap might have had great expectations regarding Prague: the First Conference on the Epistemology of the Exact Sciences, where the Vienna Circle made public its manifesto, was organized by Frank there in 1929; five years later in 1934 the Preliminary Conference of the International Congresses for the Unity of Science was hosted again in Prague. As Jan Sebestik (1994, 205) claimed, “Prague has always been one of the important European centres of learning and of science, and it has often been the forerunner of vast currents or movements, both intellectual and political.” The city also had a long tradition of scientifically oriented philosophical thinking: through Bernard Bolzano, members of the Brentano-School (such as Anton Marty, Tomáš G. -

HANS REICHENBACHS WISSENSCHAFTLICHE PHILOSOPHIE Hans Reichenbach ist heutzutage in Deutschland wenig be- kannt. Die deutsche Ausgabe seiner Gesammelten Werke, von denen zwischen 1977 und 1999 sieben Bände erschienen sind, ist noch nicht abgeschlossen – die Bände acht und neun warten auf Fertigstellung. Eine Studienausgabe eines Buchs von Reichen- bach wurde in Deutschland zuletzt vor mehr als vierzig Jahren veröff entlicht.1 Die Situation in Nordamerika ist eine völlig andere. Dans une lettre du 6 août 1932 adressée à Reichenbach, Rougier mentionne déjà des contacts avec le ministère des Affaires étrangères pour obtenir des subventions et le 6 novembre de la même année, il propose à Reichenbach de tenir la manifestation en 1934 [voir Padovani 2006, 239-–240]. -

Je montre en parti- culier le lien épistémologique et institutionnel entre le groupe de Reichenbach à Berlin et celui de Göttingen autour de Hilbert. J’esquisse aussi un rappro- chement entre certains traits caractéristiques de la position de Reichenbach et la conception régionale de l’épistémologie historique française. -

The first of these includes a growing band of researchers who recognize that Quine and Carnap are historically very important and that the more we understand of their controversy the firmer our grasp will be of various central issues in the theory of knowledge and in philosophy more generally. This audience needs as much exact information about the manuscripts as can be provided to serve as a basis for its own research. A second and equally important audience is made up of students (both undergraduate and graduate), interested laymen, and a good many professional philosophers for whom the issues and events of the Carnap-Quine controversy are not matters of regular study. What is essential for this audience is a clear, readable text, unburdened by massive scholarly paraphernalia, and an introduction that lays out the essential philosophic and biographical facts along with a guide to their interpretation. -

Chapter 10 Carnap’s Weltanschauung and the Jugendbewegung: The Story of an Omitted Chapter Adam Tamas Tuboly 10.1 Introduction Richard Creath (2007, 332) claimed earlier that “Quine did arrive in Vienna in 1932, but intellectually, at least, he never left. […] Vienna remained the city of Quine’s dreams; it was the home of his concerns, the source of his arguments, and the lode- star of his aspirations.” If Vienna was the city of Quine’s dreams, then it was indeed the city of Rudolf Carnap. According to the usual story, after Carnap arrived in Vienna in 1926 (first in 1925 to present the Aufbau as his Habilitationsschrift), he found himself in a stimulating and cooperative atmosphere. For Carnap, originally a physicist, who tried to expli- cate the connections between physics, mathematics, logic, and philosophy while searching for a general and unified scientific framework, Vienna offered the required help both to finish his ongoing projects and to conceptualize the further scientific- philosophical works. Even the Vienna Circle welcomed Carnap as the long-awaited system-builder who could synthesize their various efforts and philosophical insights into a general framework which would connect all the dots. As Philipp Frank (1949, 33) put it: “[In the Aufbau] the integration of Mach and Poincaré was actually performed in a coherent system of conspicuous logical simplicity. Our Viennese group saw in Carnap’s work the synthesis that we had advocated for many years.” But even if we do not take at face value the retrospective – and as Thomas Uebel (2003) said – highly “programmatic” historiography of Frank, already in 1929 the authors of the Circle’s manifesto (Carnap, Neurath, and partly Hahn, Feigl and Waismann) claimed that (in the context of their method): A.T. -
