Einstein and the Development of Twentieth-Century Philosophy of Science Don Howard University of Notre Dame Introduction What is Albert Einstein’s place in the history of twentieth-century philosophy of science? Were one to consult the histories produced at mid-century from within the Vienna Circle and allied movements (e.g., von Mises 1938, 1939, Kraft 1950, Reichenbach 1951), then one would find, for the most part, two points of emphasis. First, Einstein was rightly remembered as the developer of the special and general theories of relativity, theories which, through their challenge to both scientific and philosophical orthodoxy made vivid the need for a new kind of empiricism (Schlick 1921) whereby one could defend the empirical integrity of the theory of relativity against challenges coming mainly from the defenders of Kant.1 Second, the special and general theories of relativity were wrongly cited as straightforwardly validating central tenets of the logical empiricist program, such as verificationism, and Einstein was wrongly represented as having, himself, explicitly endorsed those same philosophical principles. As we now know, logical empiricism was not the monolithic philosophical movement it was once taken to have been. Those associated with the movement disagreed deeply about fundamental issues concerning the structure and interpretation of scientific theories, as in the protocol sentence debate, and about the overall aims of the movement, as in the debate between the left and right wings of the Vienna Circle over the role of politics in science and philosophy.2 Along with such differences went subtle differences in the assessment of Einstein’s legacy to logical empiricism. -

Qui peut alors assumer l’énorme travail de diffusion de sa pensée auquel il s’est adonné sans relâche, en entretenant un réseau de correspondants et de disciples ? Faute de relais institutionnels, son œuvre est livrée aux initiatives individuelles et voyage au gré des événements et des modes intellectuelles. En 1992, Jean Largeault publie un article intitulé : « Émile Meyerson, philosophe oublié1 ». Comment peut-on « oublier » une œuvre aussi importante, déjà connue, largement diffusée ? Meyerson a-t-il été simplement oublié, ou plutôt éclipsé, activement effacé de la mémoire? Et une fois disparu de l’avant- scène de la philosophie des sciences, sur quel mode est-il encore lu aujourd’hui ? Dans sa patrie d’adoption, durant les décennies qui suivent sa mort, Meyerson est durablement effacé de la scène épistémologique, cependant sa pensée circule et fait son chemin à l’étranger, en particulier aux Etats-Unis où elle affleure dans le courant qui professionnalise l’histoire et la philosophie des sciences au cours des années 1960. -

RESEARCH REPORt 2010—2012 MAX-PLANCK-INSTITUT FÜR WISSENSCHAFTSGESCHICHTE Max Planck Institute for the History of Science Cover: Aurora borealis paintings by William Crowder, National Geographic (1947). The International Geophysical Year (1957–8) transformed research on the aurora, one of nature’s most elusive and intensely beautiful phenomena. Aurorae became the center of interest for the big science of powerful rockets, complex satellites and large group efforts to understand the magnetic and charged particle environment of the earth. The auroral visoplot displayed here provided guidance for recording observations in a standardized form, translating the sublime aesthetics of pictorial depictions of aurorae into the mechanical aesthetics of numbers and symbols. Most of the portait photographs were taken by Skúli Sigurdsson RESEARCH REPORT 2010—2012 MAX-PLANCK-INSTITUT FÜR WISSENSCHAFTSGESCHICHTE Max Planck Institute for the History of Science Introduction The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) is made up of three Departments, each administered by a Director, and several Independent Research Groups, each led for five years by an outstanding junior scholar. Since its foundation in 1994 the MPIWG has investigated fundamental questions of the history of knowl- edge from the Neolithic to the present. The focus has been on the history of the natu- ral sciences, but recent projects have also integrated the history of technology and the history of the human sciences into a more panoramic view of the history of knowl- edge. Of central interest is the emergence of basic categories of scientific thinking and practice as well as their transformation over time: examples include experiment, ob- servation, normalcy, space, evidence, biodiversity or force. -

Contrary to this analytic tradition stands, as the saying goes, everything else – the so called continental philosophies. It has been highlighted recently, however, that the contexts of the Aufbaudiffer radically from the usual received view. In order to obtain a better picture of (the influences of) the Aufbau, I will present in Sect. 1 the received view which characterizes the book as a reductive empiricist, foundationalist and phenomenalist work. In Sect. 2 I will show step-by-step that this view is mistaken and the influences on the Aufbau could be located around Neo-Kantianism, the philosophy of Husserl and the human sciences [Geisteswissenschaften]. The contribution of this paper is connected to these approaches and argues for a different and currently unanalyzed and mainly ignored aspect of Carnap’s work, namely his theory of geistige Gegenstände. After all, I will claim that the motivations and continental roots of the Aufbau are just much deeper than it is usually thought. -

Scientific Philosophy and the Dynamics of Reason Michael Friedman Stanford University Scientific philosophy—in the sense of an attempt to revolutionize philosophy as a whole and as a discipline under the guidance of such an idea—is a characteristically twentieth century phenomenon, but, like so many aspects of twentieth century culture, it has deep roots in the nineteenth century. In particular, the idea of a scientific philosophy first arose in the second half of the nineteenth century, as a self-conscious intellectual reaction to what was then perceived as the “speculative” and “metaphysical” excesses of post-Kantian German idealism. In this context, a number of late nineteenth century natural scientists and mathematicians, faced with radically new problems within the shifting intellectual foundations of their own disciplines, turned to philosophy for conceptual resources. Repelled by the speculative metaphysics of post-Kantian idealism, they looked in what they took to be healthier philosophical directions—partly towards a return to the more sober, more scientifically oriented philosophizing of Kant himself, and partly towards a parallel return to the earlier anti-metaphysical stance represented by British empiricism. But the late nineteenth century scientific thinkers in question— principally Hermann von Helmholtz, Ernst Mach, and Henri Poincaré—were also faced with the problem of adapting such earlier philosophical ideas to a revolutionary new situation within the mathematical and physical sciences. Both Kantianism and empiricism had now to be adjusted to the development of non-Euclidean geometries, closely related fundamental changes in logic and the foundations of mathematics, the emergence of physiology and psycho-physics as experimental scientific disciplines, and novel, non-Newtonian styles of physical theorizing in such new areas as thermodynamics, the statistical-molecular theory of matter, and electro-magnetism. -

Janoušek and Rollinger, the Prague School, Cleaned Up
The Prague School Hynek Janoušek and Robin Rollinger The name the “Prague school of Brentano” refers to three generations of thinkers who temporarily or permanently lived in Prague, bound together by teacher/student relationships, and who accepted the main views of Franz Brentano’s philosophy. In 1879 Carl Stumpf (see CHAP. 31) arrived in Prague to take up a professorship of philosophy at the Charles-Ferdinand University. In 1880 Stumpf’s close friend and also a student of Brentano, Anton Marty (see CHAP. 30), became a professor in the same department. This marks the beginning of the Prague School. The presence of Stumpf and Marty was in fact a dramatic shift in orientation first and foremost in the domain of psychology, for Prague had previously been an enclave of Herbartian psychology, which Brentano had criticized in various respects throughout his Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint (Brentano 1874). In a certain sense their presence even harked back to an earlier time in Prague when Bernard Bolzano was developing a theory of science very much in opposition to the Kantianism of his time. Though Brentano’s philosophy was very different from Bolzano’s in many respects, it was no less anti-Kantian. This was very important at that time, for neo-Kantianism was on the rise in the German-speaking world and even beyond, whereas Stumpf and Marty made efforts to combat this kind of philosophy. Though Stumpf’s sojourn in Prague was considerably shorter-lived than Marty’s, Stumpf published the first volume of his Tone Psychology (Stumpf 1883) during that time.
