A Centurion at Wolfeton Manor

On 18th December, Wolfeton Manor Residential Home in Charminster celebrated Maurice Parratt’s 100th birthday! A party was organised for Maurice, welcoming all residents, staff and family.

Maurice was born and brought up in Shapwick Nr Blandford in 1917. He joined the navy in 1935, at the age of 18, and became a Chief Stoker, working with asbestos lined boilers. He spent two years on HMS Nelson and then the following years before, during and after the war in the Med, Atlantic and Indian Oceans on various ships. Maurice left the navy in 1984.

Maurice had five brothers; One sadly drowned in the River Stour, Blandford, in 1939, three also worked through the war (one in the army, one in the RAF and one in the Merchant Navy), all of whom survived the war and lived to their 90s, as did his elder sister. This leaves the youngest, Cyril, at 86 – the baby!

After leaving the war, he was the best man at a wedding in London, and met Edna (the bridesmaid), who also survived the bombings. They married in 1949, and had a son in 1952. Around this time, Maurice worked at the Unigate Factory at Sturminster Marshall, which entailed working on asbestos lined boilers.

Maurice believes in hard work, nothing in excess, plenty of onions and garlic, and if you have a roof over your head and food on the table, be content!

Maurice was delighted with his card from the queen, letter from the Telegram, the day full of celebration and an excellent spread of food.

Wolfeton Manor would like to thank Alter Ego for their supply of fancy dress costume for the residents and staff to enjoy! We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Beth Gregory

From the Vicarage

There is a new film just released called Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri. The film is about a woman writing messages on three billboards that are on the side of the road leading into her town in order to get her message across.

I have decided for this addition of from the Vicarage to try this myself!

Three billboards from the Vicarage (part one): God loves you God wants you to love yourself God wants you to love each other

Three seemingly simple messages, but for all of us they can be so difficult to understand, accept and put into practice. If you want to find out more, contact me! Reverend Mark

The cost of the breakfast remains at £8 (including coffee/tea and an orange or apple juice) but please don’t let this be a barrier as there is a subsidy available if the price is a problem. If you haven’t experi- enced one of The Gamekeeper’s fabulous breakfasts yet – you are missing a treat!

St. Mary’s CE VC First School, Charminster

As we move into February we are all looking forward to seeing signs of spring around our communities. The children were all involved in our ‘bring a bulb’ day last term which saw children planting spring bulbs all around the school grounds. We are hoping to see them pushing through this month!

We have been pleased to see improvements to our school grounds as this is an area we would like develop. There has been a new, softer surface underneath the agility equipment and a new retaining wall as a Reception playground boundary. Children are out and about in the grounds enjoying our Spring Term Forest School programme. This is a wonderful way of developing learning in an outdoor setting!

Children across the school are enjoying history topics this term. The younger children are finding out about ‘Toys in the Past’. They have enjoyed asking relatives and friends about toys they played with as children. If you have any old toys you would be able to bring into school for the children to look at and/or talk with you about please contact the school office.

This month, our Key Stage 2 children are set to travel back in time during their trip to the Nothe Fort in Weymouth. The children will dress as evacuees and will find out what it was like for these children during this period in history.

Our School Association parents have planned a children’s disco this month to which all children attending St Mary’s are invited. It promises to be an event the children will enjoy whilst raising much-needed funds our school. We value the hard work of our School Association parents for all of the support they give.

CHARMINSTER PRE-SCHOOL www.charminsterpreschool.co.uk Pre School Leader : Sam Mercer 01305 251512 Chairperson: Michelle McNulty [email protected]

OPENING HOURS : MONDAY - FRIDAY

Breakfast Club: 8.00am - 8.30am Early Start: 8.30am - 9.00am Morning session: 9.00am – 12.30am All day session: 9am – 3pm Extended day 9am - 5.30pm only Mon -Wed

What a busy start the children have had to the year. There has been a focus on strong and healthy bodies with dance, yoga and fitness ball activities indoors and balance beams, climbing wall and obstacle courses activities outside. Our oldest children have applied for their school places and we are working with them on their school readiness. Activities such using tweezers to pick up pom poms and buttons are being introduced. They are good fun for the children but also strengthen their hand muscles and improve their fine motor skills ready for when they start their writing at school.

Outdoor play continues to be popular with all the children in all weathers and January saw a new group of children start their program of activities at our much- loved forest school. The new garden space makes it easier for us to offer outdoor play every day and we pride ourselves on the wide and varied outdoor activities we offer our children. We are now starting to think about how we can improve the narrow, decked garden area to back of the pre-school to improve our outdoor provision for the children even further….watch this space.

We were delighted to receive a generous donation from The Three Compasses from their charity auction and also monies from the Casterbridge Rotary Club from their Christmas Prize Draw. All of these funds will go towards the work in the back garden space. We thank everyone involved with these for their contributions.

We are now working on allocating our sessions for the Summer Term. If you have not yet applied for a place and would like one for this term, please get in touch as soon as possible as many sessions are at full capacity. We are open to children from age 2 and 15-30 hours of funded childcare is available for all children from the term after their 3rd birthday. We advise getting in touch with us to place your child on our waiting list at least 6 months before you would like them to start at pre-school. Details on Early Education funding and how to apply can be found here: https://www.dorsetforyou.gov.uk/childcare/funding.

UPCOMING EVENTS: 24th March 2018: Gardening Club 10am-12noon. Children must be accompanied by an adult. £2 per child. Please email for details or for a booking form. 21st April 2018: We are working with the Casterbridge Rotary Club to host a film evening with talented local film maker Barrie Campbell of Point Blank Films. Look out for posters around the villages in the next few weeks and be sure to buy your ticket in plenty of time. 17

Charminster Brownies & Guides and Frampton Rainbows

Frampton Rainbows

Rainbows have really enjoyed working on goals, aims and achievements, learning about their Promise and being part of a group. It has been a fulfilling beginning to the new year and they have been getting to know their new leaders.

We have had a lot of fun making apple turnovers in the new oven at the hall and making birdfeeders, while doing a bit on looking after nature.

We are full right now but any enquiries and waiting list can be dealt with on our Girlguiding website – see below. Thank You for your support. Linda Scott, Alli Barlow and Christine Walton

Charminster Brownies

This term, Charminster Brownies are working on their World Cultures and Brownie Tradition badges which are appropriate because 22 February is Guide and Scouts World Thinking Day. This means we will be looking at festivals and celebrations such as Burns Night and Chinese New Year, traditional crafts and foods from overseas and we won’t forget the UK.

We will also be looking at Brownie history, traditional skills and traditional activities and may also get out our crystal balls and try to look into the future.

On 22 March, we will be holding our usual family Bingo session, where all are welcome and the prizes are Easter Eggs. We also have refreshments organised by Guides, a raffle and a children’s tombola.

Thank you to the Three Compasses for your lovely donation – we really appreciate it and it will be put to good use. Judy Thompson. [email protected] 18

Charminster Guides

Once again the Guides have a full term planned out! They are doing two badges this term - world culture and craft. There are different parts to these badges, creating a lot of laughs while trying new skills. They have also just completed their performing arts badge. Well done girls!

We had a great fun night making slime with Ellie

We have talked about our Promise and Guide law and what it means to be a Guide.

We would like to thank the Three Compasses for their donation to our unit and all the other units they have donated to (scouting and guiding). They are all a worthy cause and we really appreciate the support. THANK YOU. Alli Barlow, Ann-Marie and Ellie

If you or your daughter would like to join Rainbows, Brownies or Guides, you can find out more about what we do from the Guiding website www.girlguiding.org.uk. You can also register your interest

CHARMINSTER WI – REBRANDED!

We’re 100 years old in March and to celebrate we’re announcing a new motto. Since 1925 our aim has been:

• To steel our souls against a lust of ease • To find our welfare in the common good • To hold together, merging all degrees • In one wide brotherhood.

Not exactly snappy! So we’re moving into our second century aiming for:

• Friendship in leisure • Learning with pleasure.

If you would like to join us, we’ll throw in a cup of tea plus a lot of laughter; outings; crafts; skittles; walking; interesting Speakers and lots more besides. Second Tuesday in the month, Charminster Village Hall, 7.30 p.m. You can be sure of a warm welcome.

A new pilot

A new hand on ‘The Pilot’s’ helm, a mighty busy one, when it’s not answering the phone, sorting emails, welcoming guests, or fixing light- bulbs, it’s now sketching out ideas for ‘The Pilot’ – Sharon Williamson, of ‘The Gamekeeper’ isn’t often still.

Sharon, originally from South Africa, and Kim, her partner, have only been in ‘The Gamekeeper’ since June 2016. They bought the pub from friends, neither of them with any knowledge of restaurant/hotel life. Previously Sharon lived first in Weymouth, then in Stinsford – Kingston Maurward, to be exact, where they’d both worked. Despite a background in banking in South Africa Sharon couldn’t get a job

20

when she first came here, and had to retrain (at KMC) and ended up teaching there.

B&B with a reason

As well as a flourishing pub/restaurant trade ‘The Gamekeeper’ has a growing reputation for its B&B facilities. Wasn’t running a gastro-pub enough? Sharon replied, ”Well, I like looking after people, especially people with local connections; in South Africa we helped local people with accommodation problems” (actually her father, who was a minis- ter, frequently gave shelter to ‘curfew refugees’ – those were apart- heid days).

Present – and future plans

Sharon Williamson sees ‘The Gamekeeper’ as a ‘community pub’; as well as normal opening hours for food and drink there are regular events including Tuesday Quiz evenings and the once-fortnightly Stroke Association meeting at 10 a.m. at which toast ‘soldiers’ are now proving more popular than cake. Then there are the special events such as fashion shows (they support Julia’s House and re- search into childhood cancers), bingo sessions to raise money for Charminster School, and ‘life cycle’ celebrations, especially connect- ed with the church.

And the future? For ‘The Gamekeeper’ there are plans to introduce a Gamekeeper Passport, which will be stamped every time its owner attends a special event at the pub, and a 10% discount for NHS staff.

And for ‘The Pilot’? Involvement from readers! Sharon would love to hear what you’d like in the magazine. She herself is dreaming of puzzles, local walks...

Watch out for an interesting journey for ‘The Pilot’ with this able, imaginative inn-keeper at the helm. Lorna Low

January Meeting

Our first meeting of the year was well attended and very entertaining. James Haddow, the Taxi Driver Poet, provided a witty and light-hearted performance for our members.

Taking inspiration from this, members are requested to write a short poem or bring along a favourite poem to read out at our next meeting which will be our annual Soup and Rolls event. This will be held on Wednesday, 7th February starting at 11.30am. On that day we will be collecting money for our chosen charity, Dorset County Hospital Cancer Appeal.

Lesley Elins, Secretary Charlton Down Cricket Club

Calling all dads and lads It may feel as if we are in the depths of Winter but this is a busy time for Charlton Down Cricket Club as we prepare for the 2018 season. The club has been incredibly successful on the field over the past few years and this has much to do with our off-field planning and prepara- tion. At this time of year jobs include organising fixtures, booking in- door training sessions, making sure there are enough coaches and team managers for the three youth teams, finding new players, coax- ing old players out of retirement, raising funds for the ongoing devel- opment of club facilities…. The list could go on, but that is enough for now! The 2018 season will see CDCC playing in Saturday Division 2 of the Dorset Funeral Plan Cricket League after successive promotions in the last four years. Sundays will see the club entering the National Village Knock-out Cup for the first time, as well as the new TT25 league and friendly games against local sides and touring teams. In addition to weekend cricket, there will be lots of mid-week cricket with two teams playing in the Dorchester & District Evening League. The TT25 League on Sundays is a shorter format game (25 overs a side) aimed at filling the gap between Youth cricket and competitive Saturday league cricket. National surveys have shown there is a clear

22

trend of young cricketers playing through the age-group system but drifting away from the game when it comes to adult cricket. It is hoped that the TT25 will provide a route for youngsters into the adult game as well as encouraging older players back into playing. We envisage the side will be a healthy mix of youngsters from within the youth set- up plus some dads and a few older heads from within the club. The emphasis very much will be on enjoying the game and making sure everyone gets to bat and bowl. In terms of Youth cricket, CDCC will have three sides for the coming season at U11, U13 and U15 age-groups. Weekly training sessions will begin indoors at St Mary’s Middle School, Puddletown on Monday 19th Feb at 6pm to 7.30pm. Outdoor training will begin in mid-April and continue through the Summer. All sessions will be led by highly experienced, ECB qualified coaches. If you would like more infor- mation about the Youth section of the club, please contact [email protected] As always, the club is keen to find new members for the year ahead. Players of any age and ability are welcome, even if it has been some years since you last played! Adult training sessions will begin indoors at St Mary’s Middle School, Puddletown on Monday 19th Feb at 7.30pm to 9pm. Stinsford Parish Council We need your views … Further to article in the last edition, the Parish Council can now confirm that a public meeting will be held at 7:00pm on Monday 5 March 2018 in the Pengelly Room at Kingston Maurward College to introduce the Neighbourhood Plan concept and the process for developing – and to gain an early idea of key issues and the priorities of local residents, businesses and employers. The vision and aims of the Neighbourhood Plan needs to be based on your views. So if you live or work in the parish, please come along and share your views. Don’t worry if you don’t like talking in public – the intention is to capture your ideas in an interactive way.

In Situ Concrete Ltd The Parish Council were pleased to hear that In Situ has withdrawn its application to regularise the bulk cement process at its site at the entrance to Birkin House. However, other activity at the site is likely to continue. If you are negatively affected by noise or dust from the site, please report it as soon as possible to District Council’s Environmental Health Department on 01305 838432. If you are able to take photographs or video footage of dust, etc that would be extremely helpful in providing evidence of the impact.

Rights of Way A number of residents have expressed their concerns about the state of the rights of way in the Church Lane area of the parish. This has been reported to the ’s rights of way section. Individuals can also report any concerns or problems at any time online at https:// mapping.dorsetforyou.gov.uk/rightsofway/reportproblem/ .

Council Tax At its meeting in January, the Parish Council decided to request a Council Tax contribution of £5,000 for 2018/19. This figure remains unchanged from the last few years and equates to a Council Tax charge of £35.66 for a Band D property; an increase of less than £1 from the current year due to a lower number of Council Tax payers in the parish. So whilst your Council Tax is likely to increase overall due to decisions made by the District and County Councils, the Fire Authority and the Police and Crime Commissioner, the Parish Council’s element will not significantly contribute to this. For information on how the Parish Council spends its Council Tax contribution, please see the financial information page on the website.

STINSFORD NEWS

Almost mid January as I write and we are to have a Blue Moon on the 31st it being the second full moon in the same calendar month. The first was the Wolf Moon on the 1st. . Certain areas of the world will also see a total lunar eclipse as well, often seen as red thus becoming a red/blue moon although in the UK this will not be visible - much to see in our dark winter skies so early in the New Year. For those interested our best opportunity to see a full lunar eclipse in the UK is in July of this year. It is a pleasure to see the hedges along the roadside across the county cut and trimmed for yet a further year but at the same time this has revealed a lot of litter. Bearing in mind there are rarely footpaths alongside these hedges I can only imagine most has been ejected from passing cars and if so the question remains: what to do to overcome this problem.

The Grand Draw brought in a little over £500 after expenses to church funds and the winner of the top prize of £100 has handed it back to go toward the Vicars Discretionary Fund to help those in need in the Parish. We have therefore set aside, following the gift of a further £100, £200 towards this fund.

On the 11th January we took a “wreath of Stinsford Yew” up to Westminster Abbey to be placed in Poets’ Corner for the 90th Anniversary of Hardy’s death. As ever, a superb example of what can be done with local flora in January by Shirley Churchill; Snowdrops from the Hanbury and Primroses from the higher cemetery; catkins from hazel and alder and much more. This year’s event took place on the very day he died. First there was an Evensong sung by the wonderful men’s choir with a pure balance of voices from base to counter tenors. This was then followed by the wreath laying on Hardy’s stone with a selection of poems read by members of the Thomas Hardy Society and prayers, by the Cathedral Canon.

February will bring Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Valentine’s Day. Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day is the last day of “fat eating” before the first day of Lent, Ash Wednesday (which falls on Valentine’s Day, February 14th this year) is when the past palm crosses are burnt and the ash placed as a cross on the forehead. This practice dates back to the 11th Century. In the nine chapters of the book of Daniel there is a line about associating fasting with ashes, so ashes are associated with penance, which is the dominant theme of Lent. So here we have the first day of the 40 days and nights when Christ went into the desert, culminating in Palm Sunday and the commencement of Holy Week. Easter Sunday or “Resurrection Sunday” falls on the 1st April, 2018.

Valentine’s Day on the other hand reflects upon the early martyr, Valentinus, who was imprisoned for performing weddings for Roman soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians. During his imprisonment, Saint Valentine healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius, and before his execution, he wrote her a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell.

I was delighted to get a call regarding moles but was able to say that the problem had been overcome. There seem to be so many this year with vast tracks of hills. We hopefully have overcome the problem in the lower cemetery and all will be well as we approach spring. Michael Clarke

A Church for Everyone: Listening to Disabled People

‘I love going to church.’

‘I pray at home and worship. It is nice to do this with other people.’

‘If I am sat in my wheelchair in the middle of the aisle I feel conspicuous and uncomfortable.’ If I could have a lift I could go to Church.’

How often do we listen to disabled people and ask them what they appreciate, what they find difficult and what would be helpful to them when they go to church?

As part of the Anglican Dorchester Deanery Mission Plan, a small working group heard from disabled people, including several from Charminster and Charlton Down. The newly published booklet, A Church for Everyone: Listening to Disabled People incorporates their views. It provides practical insights about what might enhance the lives of disabled people and signposts useful addresses and resources locally and nationally.

It includes a list of questions to challenge churches. Often the solutions are surprisingly sim- ple. For example, do we arrange the lighting so that people who lip read can see the speaker clearly?

The group was influenced by the writings of Professor John Swinton who argues that churches should be communities where all belong. ‘To be included you just need to be present. To belong you need to be missed.’

The booklet has been welcomed by church leaders. Rev Claire McClelland, the Vicar of St Peter’s, says: ‘I have already benefitted from being part of the working group. Listening to disabled people has enabled me to think about changes we might need to make. This is about something more than imple- menting the requirements of the Equality Act. It is about everyone, whether they are disabled or not, feeling that they belong and are supported.’

The booklet can be downloaded from www.stmarys-charminster.org.uk or http://www.dorchesteranglican.info/groups/church-support

Harbour Voices - Songs of the Sea Charlton Down Herrison Hall Saturday 10the March, 7:30pm

Tickets £8, £6 u18s, £24 family

from 01305 264060 / www.artsreach.co.uk

Harbour Voices, a twenty-strong group of men and women, will present a heart-warming celebration of the sea with their performance of traditional shanties and original songs recounting tales of our Dorset coast past and present.

Sea shanties are the work songs that were once sung to accompany labour on board large merchant ships. Growing out of the working chants of British and other national maritime traditions, shanties were notably influenced by songs of African Americans, such as those sung whilst loading vessels with cotton. Borrowing from many contemporary popular music enjoyed by sailors, such as minstrel music and land-based folk songs, these shanties were adapted to suit the various labour tasks required on board, such as weighing anchor and setting sail.

Join in the rousing choruses, hear stories of sailors and whalers, boat- builders and fisher-wives, and glimpse moments in the lives of those who risked all to make their living from the sea. Prepare to be moved, amused, intrigued and inspired by this unusual show, featuring vocal harmonies to make your heart soar, and songs that speak of our vital connection to the sea. Touring Dorset with Artsreach, the counties touring arts charity. www.artsreach.co.uk

Charminster & Charlton Down

Q. What issues are facing the parish at the moment?

A. Currently, at the time of writing, we are about to attend the planning committee Next Parish Council Meeting meeting at WDDC where they will decide 6 February 7.00pm whether to allow the speculative planning Charminster Village Hall application for 120 houses off East Hill on what is know as the “Strawberry Fields”. As the magazine deadline is fixed the result will be “old news” by the time you read this. So if the planning com- mittee decide tomorrow that despite being outside the development bound- ary there is little harm in this large development and approve it what will it mean? The application is in outline only so most of the detail, such as the layout and design of the houses will be subject to a further planning applica- tion. The site will have to provide a play area and open space but there will be no benefits to the village generally. The positives will be that the site will provide 42 affordable homes (but these will not be offered first to local people first—unlike Charminster Farm). The extra housing should also provide extra customers for the shop/post office and the bus service. However, 120 extra homes will bring increased traffic and further dangers on the small village roads without footways. The applicant is not a housing developer so the site will be sold on to a company who will develop the site. If the decision was to refuse the application the applicant may then appeal against the decision.

However, regardless of which way the decision goes, the work on identifying extra housing land in the Dorchester area in the revision of the “Local Plan” continues. Much of the land around Charminster is being considered for fur- ther housing and in the spring we should see WDDC consulting on what sites it suggests should go forward for development. At that point residents will be encouraged to feed back their views to WDDC on what is being proposed. Interesting times.
