Edited by W. P. W. PHILLIMORE, M.A., B.C.L., AND EDMUND NEVILL, B.A., F.S.A. VOL. VI. Xonfcon Issued to the Subscribers by Phillimore & Co., 124, Chancery Lane. 1912. ana 90 PREFACE. In this, the sixth volume of the Dorsetshire series, are given the marriage registers of thirteen parishes, six of which it will be seen date from the sixteenth century, the same number from the seventeenth century, whilst one does not commence until the eighteenth century. In all the records of fifty Dorsetshire Marriage Registers have now been issued in this series, more than a fifth of the total number. The editors desire to express their thanks to the various clergy who have permitted the Registers to be printed and afforded facilities for the work of trans- cription. Their names are given under the respective parishes. Special thanks for transcription are due to the Rev. C. F. Medcalf, Mrs. Lewis Paine, M. Richard Hine, Mrs. Cockcraft, of Chickerell ; the Rev. S. Hinton Roberts, the late Rev. Canon Pulliblank, and the Rev. Henry Morland. Several of these Registers were transcribed by Mr. Nevill. The same contractions are made use of as have been adopted in previous volumes. It must be always borne in mind that these printed extracts do not constitute legal evidence, and that for certificates appli- cation must be made to the respective parish clergy. The editors would impress upon their readers the fact that the issue of these volumes is only rendered possible by the enthusiastic help of various volunteer transcribers, and they will therefore welcome help from those who may be willing and able to assist the work in that wav. Volume VII, which, it is hoped, may be issued in the course of a few months, will be devoted to the Marriage Registers of the county town of Dorchester. W. P. W. P. E.N. Section 34: Western Dorset Functional Area ___________________________________________________________ 34. Western Dorset Functional Area Introduction 34.1.1. The Western Dorset Functional Area is centred on the historic market town of Bridport and includes the small market town of Beaminster and the coastal resort of Lyme Regis. Function and issues 34.1.2. The function of each of the main settlements is described in Figure 34.1 below, which also highlights some of the key issues in each of the main settlements. The three towns generally have a good range of services and some job opportunities, but there is a range of issues including: a low wage economy; an ageing population; a lack of affordable housing; and, in the case of Lyme Regis and in some villages, a high level of second home ownership. Figure 34.1: The function and issues associated with the main settlements in the Western Dorset Functional Area Beaminster - The small market town of Beaminster lies about 6 miles north of Bridport and has a population of about 2,900. The town has a range of local shops and facilities in the town centre and a secondary school. Although the Clipper Tea Company and other firms offer some employment opportunities, there is a net outflow of workers. The town has an elderly population and has experienced a decline in population in recent years. Bridport - Bridport is a historic market town, which together with West Bay has a population of over 13,900. It is the main service centre in the western part of Dorset and a centre for the arts, culture and tourism.
